  • why did you choose the MKE400 over Canon's DM-100?

  • @mrdaygo760 I'm not a fan of Canon's idea to make their "Mini" shoe. It's not a good idea to make a product that only works with one line of cameras. Plus the MKE400 is superior in audio quality. Another thing is that you can only use one "Mini" device at one time, and I like to use the VL-5 video light. Thanks Canon for limiting me on my use of external devices :(

  • Did you consider the RODE videoMic or was that too bulky for your applications? I just got an L bracket from adorama and thinking of what to mount to it besides some SIMA lights.

  • I have to admit that I am brand loyal. I did not try the RODE. I do have a Sennheiser wireless and I've always been impressed with the quality. I also liked the idea of being able to get a fuzzy wind muff for the mic (I call it my dead mouse). As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with the RODE, I just like the Sennheiser brand...

  • I just got WD-H58. Love the wide angle perspective. However, due you notice a slight reduction in crispness? Seems either a bit darker or less clear.

  • @mrdaygo760 I guess anytime you put something in front of the lens, like a filter or another lens, you will get some change in image quality. It's up to you if the change is good enough to live with. Kind of like all the side effects of certain prescription drugs.

Bottom line is always your personal preference. I like the flexibility with the WD-H58, and have not noticed any significant image degradation. If I need to, I can always take the adaptor off the camera :)

  • can you post a picture of what this camera looks like when you have the shotgun mic attatched

  • I don't think I can post pictures here. The shotgun mic has a standard hot-shoe mount, but my camera has the Mini-shoe... Stupid idea for Canon to do this if you ask me :P So I had my cousin make a special side mount so I can attach the mic on the right side of the camera. Maybe I can film the camera looking into a mirror to show you what it looks like, but your setup will be different.

  • Beautiful video! I have a Canon Vixia HF S100 too! I'm thinking about purchasing the WD-H58 wide lens but am not sure of a few things. I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions.

    1. Does the Canon WD-H58 wide lens require an external adaptor to be able to be placed on the HF S100? If yes, what kind?

-I was told that using this lens would require an adaptor and it also wasn't made by Canon.

    2. How much does the weight/balance of the camcorder change with the lens attached?

  • The Canon WD-H58 is a 58mm thread (that's what the 58 stands for). The front of the HF S100 is also a 58mm thread. They mate together perfectly with no external adaptor needed. Whoever told you they needed an adaptor was mistaken. As long as you buy the WD-H58 from a respectable store (or online vendor like B&H photo) then you will get a Canon made product that is specifically designed for use on Canon products.

  • Oh okay. I was looking at the front of my lens and it said 64 mm then a 0 with a slash down the middle vertically. After that it says 58. I'm hoping that's the real number for the lens. Thanks for your help.

  • You are correct, it does say 64mm, but that is for the 35mm equivalent zoom rating (I think...)

  • The WD-H58 does add about a pound of weight to the front of the camera, but it's not bad to get used to. You can do full zoom through with the lens, so I very rarely take it off the camera. Plus I LOVE the way it looks on the camera :) Makes it look a bit more "Professional" if you ask me.

Side note, you will not be able to use the on board LED light with the adaptor on. I use the Canon VL-5 camera light which sticks up higher then the adaptor. You can hear me turn it on in the video...

  • ALSO, make sure you get the WD-H58 and NOT the WD-58H which is for the Canon GL2 (4:5 aspect ratio).

  • @DukeNukeIt I also have a hf s100. I like how this video looks but I have a question about your other video. Is it just me or do the pillars seem to bend a little bit? It might be just my eyes playing tricks on me. Or, possibly, is that an intended side effect? I assumed the main functionality of a wide angle lens was to get more in the frame, as well as making the video better overall. I'm only just getting into cameras.

  • @ptc5010 I'm not sure what other video you may be talking about, but this is the only video that I used the WD-58H on. Addison's first video was shot without the wide-angle adaptor. Summer Rain, DWIFF 2009 and the Car/Train accident site were shot with my DIY 35mm adaptor. All the other videos were shot with my Canon GL2.

Any wide-angle lens will cause some distortion, most obvious will be barrel distortion. No wide-angle attachment lens will make the video "better", only wider.

  • @DukeNukeIt Oh sorry, the video I'm referring to is the first video in related videos. I mistook that to be one of your videos as well. Thank you for the information just the same. One question if you wouldn't mind, about how much money did you spend creating your DIY 35mm adaptor. And, as embarrassing to ask as it is, can you explain the advantage/difference of a 35mm lens? As opposed to say... the WD-58H.

  • I am very lucky to have a cousin who has a machine shop in his basement. This makes the fabrication of a 35mm adaptor much easier. Total cost of parts were around $250.00 not including the lenses.

The main advantage of a 35mm adaptor is the shallow Depth of Field (see my "Summer Rain" video) plus you can change lenses (bigger or smaller) to get more or less of the surrounding scene into your finished product. The WD-58H is only for a wider amount of your scene to be shot, nothing more.

  • beautiful video ^^ congrats

  • aw.......................kewt little baby!^.^

  • very nice voices, i think i will buy the mke400, thank you very much. is the wind protection nice or should i buy the SENNHEISER MZW 400?

whats the name of the song? nice vid, i love it :D

  • Wind noise is always terrible, even if you have a foam baffle. The MZW 400 is an absolute necessity if you're going to shoot anything outside, or in windy conditions. Even a ceiling fan can produce wind noise without a proper wind-muff (aka Dead Cat).

  • She's so sweet =)
