Apparently the lighting guy was off that night. What's up with the crappy lighting? (from behind no less). Awesome performance, at least musically but Geddy's voice has gone the way of Ian Anderson's. But he's still the best bass player in hard rock today IMO.

@jedw Well, it is a warmer sounding instrument. And Geddy did say that the bulk of the Moving Pictures sessions was done with his Fender. According to the "Laws of Geddy" the Fender rules. And the matter is closed.
re: the voice - check the Madison Sq Gdns concert from the same tour - much better vocal rendition - I imagine Ged's voice gets raped by this song so he can only belt it out every so often - hardly worth wrecking a tour for one song.
I think Geddy's voice sounds relatively the same as it does now...Id love to see them pull this one out for the Clockwork Angels Tour, just the prelude, not the whole thing. After all, he can still hit the high notes during the part in Freewill where he sings "Each of us, a cell of awareness, imperfect and incomplete". Of course there are songs he "cant" do anymore like most songs off of Fly By Night (ex. by tor) and a few from AFTK.
Ooh My GOD.... too cool... & when Ged doesn't hit the pitch perfect..... he's too high....any1 notice his 2cd line especially? struggle..... love it! THE GREATEST ROCK STAR TO EVER WALK THE FACE OF THIS PLANET
God SHUT UP the live take is 7 years old so comments about his voice based on this clip are irrelevant, and they recorded Hemispheres in 77 so Christ people you body changes in 34 years...Geddy's voice is not "GONE". He can't sing the high notes he could in his twenties. I challenge anyone bitching do prove they can do the exact same things they could do at that age...especially given Rush's touring schedule. Rush Rocks and we love them.
@Hopspop Also, old musicains need to realise that they cant sing stff in there origonal tuining. do you think that daavid coverdale is going to go sing still of the night in the origional tuning.
i'm a huge rush fan, saw them at stafford bingley hall way back in the 70's myself being a 53 year old singer who has gigged as a solo for over 500+gigs with performances ranging from 2 1/2 hrs to 5 hours, time takes it's toll and geddy can't sing like he used to.it's not his fault it's a fact of life for most, not everyone, but most. I have all rush albums up to and including power windows but i feel that is where i have now called it a day as the best is gone. still love everything to then
If any of the plonks going on about Ged's vocal knew anything about Rush they would know that when originally recording the album in the UK they ran so late that the vocals were left until they moved to London to do the mix. It was only then that it was realised that the keys that the music was in were at the very top of Ged's range and he had a real struggle to complete the vocals, having seen him live in 2004, 2007 he sounds ok to me as he will be in Dublin and Newcastle this year.
OK, I've been a huge Rush fan since 1980, but Geddy's voice is gone. Damn near painful to listen to. They would be amazing if they got a powerful vocalist. I nominate ZP Theart or Mike Patton.
HLOY FUCKING SHIT!!!! Finally some one has realized that his voice is gone. Ok look, I love rush so much i would make a transplant for my voice for Geddy's but his voice is gone folks.
It isn't suited for the old, high-pitched "shrieking" stuff from before Permanent Waves, but everything past it still sounds good. Even the down-pitched 2112 sounds awesome to my ears.
@noobster504 You're such a moron! I just saw Rush a couple of weeks ago and his voice sounded fucking amazing! Doing this song all tour long must have been hard on his vocals, give him a break
They should open the Clockwork Angels Tour with Hemispheres Prelude :O, if this new concept album is supposed to have (according to their producer), this ''sound'' that would bring the boys ''back to their roots'' with lots of guitar, Geddy that does a lot of high-pitched vocals , just imagine how mindblowing it would be for the Holy Trinity to open with old epics such as these, Dirk does a little speech and says ''Here's our NEW epics from our new album Clockwork Angels!!'' I'd collapse ♥♥
You can see why they rarely played this, in the documentry they talk about how the album was keyed half an octave too high and it shows here, he's really stretching for those notes. Awesome vid though, so cool to see it played live.

@constantinosbassman A little Rush review, 35 years together, 20 plus albums, Neil's retired in 5 categories of best drummer in Modern Drummer magazine, "Geddy and Alex have won best player in Guitar magazines, they all have their own equipment lines and endorsement deals, Neil favorite lyricist in Guitar Magazine, Artist of Decade, Royal Order of Canada, record gold and platinum award, in the 70's 200 shows a year, they write all their own music unlike Madonna, etc... They rule, thanks for vid.
@constantinosbassman I hope when they get the Hall of Fame award finally, they sell it on ebay and donate the money to music school education or starving children, or just throw it in the face of the Hall of Fame voting board. Van Halen and Metallica got the award, and Rush has been together since Geddy and Alex met in 1968. How long were the Beatles together, 10 years or so? Rush is only 7 years or so younger than the Beatles, and still records and tours. Love the Beatles though. Go Rush.
@saotome692 That would be sooooo strenuous on Geddy to sing even The Voyage (Part 1) alone! You'd be asking alot for them to do that, even though I'd pay just to hear those 2 songs played together. Time Machine tour! Counting down the days till all of the Moving Pictures album is performed! :D
Awesome. Just some badass jams goin on. Man. Geddy sure was into it. He was ripping that bass apart. And the sound was as close to perfect as you can get. Was this from the Counterparts tour?
Man. If so, that was 16 years ago. And they still keep getting better. And younger. Hell.... Three hours of Rush, I'm ready to sit down. They can kick out a three hour show day after day and run around that stage the whole time. And here I am all worn out after watching one show. Those bastards.
I think I would have Plotzed as well. I seen them Rochester, NY around this date. I think it was after this date. Mid to late May. Had my best seats ever for a RUSH concert. They are the best.
well damn, he's been a power-vocalist for DECADES and he really used to screech - notice that in all songs now, he doesn't sing at the high pitch anymore. It's called getting old :) Still, until you can get up there and pump that out, just be happy they still do the old stuff.
i wish they's played this song on the snakes and arrows tour...i would of loved to see and hear it....its gotta be one of my favourite rush songs and believe me, that coming from me is strange because i dont like to pick favourites when it comes to rush!
makes me sad. Geddy Lee is my all-time favourite bass player. Everything I play, I model after him. but he can't quite hit those notes anymore... 2:57... I love it nontheless. When will they play Cygnus X-1 book i and ii back-to back?
They've always wanted to do their own thing, and that's how they stood the test of time. I saw them in Ottawa in Sept 07, it was a kickin show, but the paper only gave it 3 stars... of all the ignorant... In my opinion, they reserve the right to do whatever they want.
Well, he is in his fifties and I strongly suspect that Geddy has never been taught to sing. He raches for notes he doesn't naturally have and I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't sustained some kind of voice damage over the years.
How hard do you think it is to hit those notes at 55 years old, natemoore. srsly. even rockstars get old, but that doesn't mean that they aren't as awesome
The release of this album was Rush at their pinnacle. "Hemispheres" was/is progressive rock at it's absolute finest. It is a crime that they have yet to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. One of if not thee greatest rock bands of all time.....
Yikes! Ged's not sounding so great on this song. His voice was spot on during this past New Orleans concert, however. They performed one of the best shows I've ever seen.
This is my favorite song by the group and I'd been wising they'd play the entire deal for a tour. I remember hearing it for the first time. I got chills down my spine when the prelude went into the other part, but "Amageddon" was the most spine chilling event for me.
got this album on vinal christmas day back right after it came out .i also got a cheap plastic record player to go with it and a six pack from my dad.after he helped me set it up,I said you can go now.he replied saying screw you,i bought it,i wanna hear it!!!!
after the first side was over i asked him ,well wadya think?he said ,and i quote, the bass and guitar are good but who the fuck is that guy playing drums?? he left i got drunk and heard the other side
arent chunky cantbars with raisins and one legged coocoocahewy people? truth and truth and and love of truth of love shining cadbury roll away the stoners
The rumor is that they are rehearsing most of Hemispheres for this upcoming leg of the tour. It's only a rumor so if they don't do it I don't want to be bombarded. It would be nice to hear a good chunk of it, however.
To my mind Hemispheres is the most challenging song this band ever attempted. Get behind a kit and play his stuff before you would stand as a critic of this badass band.

Great vid

I think I would have Plotzed as well. I seen them Rochester, NY around this date. I think it was after this date. Mid to late May. Had my best seats ever for a RUSH concert. They are the best.

Holy shit, I never knew they played this live in the 90s!!! I think I would have had a stroke if I were at that show!
eveningtsar 2 years ago
No kidding! I've seen Rush 13 times now since 1991, and I've never seen this live!
Must've been a special treat for the Toronto crowd.

well damn, he's been a power-vocalist for DECADES and he really used to screech - notice that in all songs now, he doesn't sing at the high pitch anymore. It's called getting old :) Still, until you can get up there and pump that out, just be happy they still do the old stuff.
dmso12 2 years ago
Maybe it's flat. Whatever it is, he's not hitting it correctly.
weaselsuit 2 years ago
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this, but it sounds to me like Geddy is significantly sharp on this vocal.

makes me sad. Geddy Lee is my all-time favourite bass player. Everything I play, I model after him. but he can't quite hit those notes anymore... 2:57... I love it nontheless. When will they play Cygnus X-1 book i and ii back-to back?
cygnus2112 3 years ago
It's really fun to see him cut loose and try to sing that part though. He's typically very cautious vocally now.
berpaderp 2 years ago
They've always wanted to do their own thing, and that's how they stood the test of time. I saw them in Ottawa in Sept 07, it was a kickin show, but the paper only gave it 3 stars... of all the ignorant... In my opinion, they reserve the right to do whatever they want.
cygnus2112 2 years ago 2
Well, he is in his fifties and I strongly suspect that Geddy has never been taught to sing. He raches for notes he doesn't naturally have and I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't sustained some kind of voice damage over the years.
A great singer and a unique voice nevertheless
floouk 2 years ago 2
He's been a smoker all his life, that has no doubt done some damage to his voice/range.

You would have seen Cygnus X-1 Books 1 & 2 played back to back on the Hemispheres Tour '78-'79. I know because I was there.
Cash2112 2 years ago
You sir, are one fortunate bastard. That is exactly the tour I would have loved to have seen.
Peatman 2 years ago
I vaguely remember reading somewhere when they made Hemispheres he was singing way out of his range the whole time. Awesome nonetheless.

what do you mean, he was singing too high?

How hard do you think it is to hit those notes at 55 years old, natemoore. srsly. even rockstars get old, but that doesn't mean that they aren't as awesome

The release of this album was Rush at their pinnacle. "Hemispheres" was/is progressive rock at it's absolute finest. It is a crime that they have yet to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. One of if not thee greatest rock bands of all time.....

Yikes! Ged's not sounding so great on this song. His voice was spot on during this past New Orleans concert, however. They performed one of the best shows I've ever seen.
natemoore 3 years ago
This is my favorite song by the group and I'd been wising they'd play the entire deal for a tour. I remember hearing it for the first time. I got chills down my spine when the prelude went into the other part, but "Amageddon" was the most spine chilling event for me.

got this album on vinal christmas day back right after it came out .i also got a cheap plastic record player to go with it and a six pack from my dad.after he helped me set it up,I said you can go now.he replied saying screw you,i bought it,i wanna hear it!!!!

The rumor is that they are rehearsing most of Hemispheres for this upcoming leg of the tour. It's only a rumor so if they don't do it I don't want to be bombarded. It would be nice to hear a good chunk of it, however.

That would be incredible!!

hopefully they'll tune it down a whole step, like 2112. it'll give geddy a break from those notes way up in the stratosphere.

@rushtributeband Yeah, Geddys use of the Sansamp tube emulator does the business & adds the Grit to his sound.

@alembicbassguy This was before the SansAmp. I think he was using Trace Elliot at this time.
