Can you guys help?! Is he basically saying in this video that when you run the bow across the strings you go inward more on the first string and outwards more on the last string? And also that you should do it lightly and then teaches you how to hold the bow? Just wanna get a good summary because I had a hard time understanding the video :\
@Bludhoundz8 Essentially, you need to try to have the bow perpendicular to whatever string you are playing on and to keep it straight. He also demonstrates the way to hold the bow and an exercise to help you get the feel for the bow grip. I'm not sure what you mean by lightly, but how hard you press down is up to you and the music you are playing, but don't press so hard that it makes a grinding sound or so soft that you can't really hear anything at all obviously haha. Hope I helped, good luck!
he seems like a cool guy but most cello players look down on other instrument players just because of the cellos price range, i wonder how he would feel about the one im making in my workshop... also that cello is a wreck, im suprised he hasnt thrown out the cello considering those dents and nicks have killed his soundboard and the instruments voice

Dude, a better way to describe the cello is through a graphic representation with words and lines that mean stuff. Check out Royksopp's 'Remind Me' video for a pastiche starter
Love these videos! So encouraging, you make everything easy to understand! I played as a young child, but was discouraged. You have inspired me to pick up my old cello and start again.
I was like "This is interesting" and when I heard his accent I was like "OH YEAH!" For some reason I assume learning from an older guy with an accent means I'll be taught correctly but hey, I was right! XD yay me!
Now....if only I had a cello around to actually practice with.
@FluturasNuMaiAiAripi LOL! anyways I wonder why this guy is teaching beginners how to use the bow 1st? In middle school where there was a strings class, the teacher said "put down that bow!, you are going to learn how to pluck first!". I always thought plucking a song was easier than playing it with a bow. So when you get the hang of it plucking, you pick up the bow and play. I sort of got over doing that when I went to the faster music, like- "The flight of the Bumble bee" no sluring and such.
I have a question. I noticed that they come in sizes. Bothe me and my grandmother want to learn how to play and i was wondering how can you tell what size to get?
@whatitsjustme As long as you guys are over 5' then u can get the full size. 4/4. If one of you is taller, you can pull out more of the endpin. hope this helps

hi my name is michael, iam new to the cello and have a great passion for the instruament, however i find that tuning the cello is a bit difficult (its not like my guitars tuning pegs thats for shure)... any advice on tuning correctly? please
@MrBigmike829 The cello is tuned in 5ths, with the highest string being A, then D, G, and C. if you're cello has never been tuned before, then you should get a professional to tune it for you until you know the notes by ear. If you want to try tuning by yourself, you can reply to me.
@cellogal1994 hhmm. thank you, that information will be very usefull. How ever (perhaps i should have worded this more directly) My main problem lies in the tuning pegs.. I need advise on the friction of the pegs,, sometimes they can slip out, and i was wondering if i could get some advise on that aspect.. i would greatly appritieate it :)
@MrBigmike829 It could be one of two problems: 1. the pegs could just be slightly loose. in that case, you can buy some liquid from a strings shop that when you put it on the pegs, they will have more friction. or 2. the pegs may be too loose, and you'll have to replace them which could get expensive. If you want the liquid, ask a person in a musical store. sorry, i forget what the liquid is called.
@cellogal1994 Awsome, :) thank you very very much. ill take my cello with me to the store when i get the fluid. But agian, thank you, you have been very heplfull :)

@Simplybehonest Best place to go is a music store in your area that specializes in violins/cellos. They'll glance at you and know what size you need. Takes a lot of patience and dedication but very rewarding if you stick with it. A professional Cellist told me not long ago that the Cello is an instrument you never stop learning on. 30 years later he still finds better ways to shift and transition his left hand.
Wonderful videos! Are these available on DVD? I clicked the link, but I get a 404 error. I googled him but didn't have much luck there either. I'd love to buy a set of these vids, maybe several to give as gifts.
In my studio, students learn the bow hold very quickly using the CelloPhant[tm] bow accessory. The accessory keeps the hand relaxed and fingers in place while we learn more music.
@19971602 you can find them in music stores like Lyric (which sells Bachendorf), and JB Music (which sells Hofner). I bought mine in JB music for about Php28k.
I have played the cello for about 3years. Everytime after I practiced only less than a hour I kind of felt pain in my shoulder. Watching your lesson, I realized I got serious problems in bowing. Thank you so much for your precious lessons.
I play violin okay. I got my first cello yesterday, and kind of fought with it a bit. Now I see the differences. Can't thank you enough for this. You are a good teacher. I will try everything you said, and then I'll go on to the other lessons. You remind me of my teachers back in music school. Thanks again.
Thank you very much for this video, Queixoso and to Herr Zentgraf, wherever that gentleman is.
Many people underestimate the training and nuance required to play this most beautiful instrument. I hope this video helps everyone as it has helped me, and that it inspires the grand sound of human music to be generated across the world.
i was wondering well ive always loved classical music i play classical guitar and i was wondering ??whats a gud cello and how much duz it cost??like brands of gud cellos and prices
a good celo can cost any where from 15thousand to a couple hundred thousand to millions, noit including the bow a good bow costs 3 thousand and a good case about 2 or 3 thousand as well.(expensive!!!! i know)
of corse a pro can get a cello for 15hundred or as low as 275$ and still sound good, but if they really want to sound good they wld buy an expensive instrument, i bet no one in a pressional symphony has an instrument for less then 3 thousand dolllars, and for soloist that like trash to them(even thought it wldnt b for me lol) but btw do u play an instrument?
An average beginning cello runs around $1000-2000, a bow from $100-500 and a hard case is about $400.
Professional instruments (for use in a full time orchestra) typically start at around $100,000, though you will find people playing on cheaper instruments for various reasons. A professional bow can cost anywhere between $4,000 and millions of dollars. The highest price ever for a cello is $20 million.
What the hell makes an orchestral instrument $100,000? What's the difference between a $5,000 instrument and one of those? Is the former laced in gold and hundreds of years old; does it play any differently, or is it just status?
@MrSquitwet what makes an instrument expensive or cheap it of course the production process, but the most important thing is the sound of the wood. Each peace of same wood type has a different potenctial of sound ability even if its from the same tree, like each human has a different voice. The second thing is the age, like a good whisky wood sounds better trough time, that is why an old instrument in a good condition has a uniqe sound and is expensive.
from tip to frog... ha :D I want to learn soooo badly.

So i am interested in cello, and I am looking for information on what cellos are good to learn on. I'd like the fullsize as presented in this video, but have limited knowledge on the instrument....
can someone please direct me to where i can find out information such as this,, or inform me? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Parabéns!!!

Wonderful videos! Are these available on DVD? I clicked the link, but I get a 404 error. I googled him but didn't have much luck there either. I'd love to buy a set of these vids, maybe several to give as gifts.

Wonderful !
In my studio, students learn the bow hold very quickly using the CelloPhant[tm] bow accessory. The accessory keeps the hand relaxed and fingers in place while we learn more music.
Thanks!

The cello and the viola are two of my favorite symphonic chordophones .
stonedgeek 2 years ago 7
I never heard someone call them chordophones before. Could you explain?
D0bb024 2 years ago
A chordophone is any instrument that uses vibrating strings as a method of making sound. So guitars violin cello viola are all chordophones. ;)
Vampirotoothis09 2 years ago
Ah I see. That makes sense so it's really a different name for instruments in the string family. Thank you for that!

Bravo! Encore! Amazing!
Thank you very much for this video, Queixoso and to Herr Zentgraf, wherever that gentleman is.
Many people underestimate the training and nuance required to play this most beautiful instrument. I hope this video helps everyone as it has helped me, and that it inspires the grand sound of human music to be generated across the world.

i was wondering well ive always loved classical music i play classical guitar and i was wondering ??whats a gud cello and how much duz it cost??like brands of gud cellos and prices
mosobomb 2 years ago
a good celo can cost any where from 15thousand to a couple hundred thousand to millions, noit including the bow a good bow costs 3 thousand and a good case about 2 or 3 thousand as well.(expensive!!!! i know)
fanofjapanandmusic 2 years ago
um for like pros u can get a cello for 15 hundred or as low as 275 and bows can be from 30 to 50 and its not the instrument but rather the player
pyromaniactard2 2 years ago
of corse a pro can get a cello for 15hundred or as low as 275$ and still sound good, but if they really want to sound good they wld buy an expensive instrument, i bet no one in a pressional symphony has an instrument for less then 3 thousand dolllars, and for soloist that like trash to them(even thought it wldnt b for me lol) but btw do u play an instrument?
fanofjapanandmusic 2 years ago
An average beginning cello runs around $1000-2000, a bow from $100-500 and a hard case is about $400.
Professional instruments (for use in a full time orchestra) typically start at around $100,000, though you will find people playing on cheaper instruments for various reasons. A professional bow can cost anywhere between $4,000 and millions of dollars. The highest price ever for a cello is $20 million.
cellist18 2 years ago
What the hell makes an orchestral instrument $100,000? What's the difference between a $5,000 instrument and one of those? Is the former laced in gold and hundreds of years old; does it play any differently, or is it just status?
MrSquitwet 2 years ago 2
A comparison is needed. What's the difference between a stock Chevy and a Nascar Chevy..The same is true with instruments, as well as hamburgers..lol
TheDad3456 2 years ago
I second that statement.
shadow7530 2 years ago
@MrSquitwet what makes an instrument expensive or cheap it of course the production process, but the most important thing is the sound of the wood. Each peace of same wood type has a different potenctial of sound ability even if its from the same tree, like each human has a different voice. The second thing is the age, like a good whisky wood sounds better trough time, that is why an old instrument in a good condition has a uniqe sound and is expensive.
