  • from tip to frog... ha :D I want to learn soooo badly.

  • He takes so much time and patience to explain a proper way of playing the instrument. I wish there were more teachers like him. Thanks a LOT

  • Thank you for the lesson. I play my violin similiar to the cello style. I place it on my legs and lean it on my chest, with a cushion, more comfortable this way.

  • so slow

  • Thank you for your kind generosity in creating these gratis lessons!

  • i love Metal and Classic music, and Apoclyptica is maybe a reason i THINK about buying a cello, i found some good ones for an "okay" amount of money >_> ( i am a guitarist )

  • Thank you for this, do you do any DVD`S for intermediate people?.

  • Such a legend.

  • Thanks so much for these videos! I had started cello lessons when my oldest son graduated high school & left for college. I had to give them up when I couldn't afford them any more. Now that I have these lessons on computer, I can practice at my own pace. I was glad to see that you had us use the bow right away. Since I already know how to read music, I was anxious to start actually playing. My sons' teachers had them bowing right away, on cello & double bass! I can't wait to practice now!

  • This is very helpful, thank you!

  • I got my cello last nite. Thank you for your time and expertise. I want to tell you, because of your lessons , I have learned how to hold the bow properly. I had to leave the violin because my hand was going numb. Your way has allowed me to play, bypassing the ind

  • you are a great teacher, and your cello is like you, softly and deep.Thank you teacher

  • he's feeling horny with his cello :D

  • Him,''the body consists of the front and the baaakk

    Me,''no der".

    good job though

  • So they put the neck base by my F holes? XD

  • So , you dont want to come to Australia to teach me ! Drat! Would you be interested in giving me some lessons on Skype.I may only need a lesson every 2 weeks..... I am self learning at the moment. I am happy to pay you. Your humble friend Garry.I am 60.

  • Hi , I am turning 60 this year . I bought a cello 3 weeks ago . I am enjoying learning sooo much. You are an inspiration to me. Great lessons !Please come to my Australian farmhouse to teach me !

  • hahahahha f holes!!! XD

  • @lexrockstheblock are you kidding me! His cello maybe centuries old and has a great setup and the sound to prove it. You should not be in tje business of making any stringed instruments if uou cant tell a masterpiece from a common one!

  • wow thank you very much

  • Can you guys help?! Is he basically saying in this video that when you run the bow across the strings you go inward more on the first string and outwards more on the last string? And also that you should do it lightly and then teaches you how to hold the bow? Just wanna get a good summary because I had a hard time understanding the video :\

  • @Bludhoundz8 Essentially, you need to try to have the bow perpendicular to whatever string you are playing on and to keep it straight. He also demonstrates the way to hold the bow and an exercise to help you get the feel for the bow grip. I'm not sure what you mean by lightly, but how hard you press down is up to you and the music you are playing, but don't press so hard that it makes a grinding sound or so soft that you can't really hear anything at all obviously haha. Hope I helped, good luck!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA "f holes" sorry...kind of immature but your cello is very beautiful.

  • @MikaylaAshlynTurner what about the 4:04 the G-String? ^_^ stsk tsk tsk

  • @MikaylaAshlynTurner That's not really immature. Musicians call instruments beautiful too

  • @xbasket12x i think she meant she felt immature for laughing when he said "f holes".

  • @MikaylaAshlynTurner ????????????? Which is your trouble????

  • @MikaylaAshlynTurner Better than "A" hole. :0)

  • @MikaylaAshlynTurner Stop touching your F-Hole. Start practicing your motion on the G String!

  • wonderful post thank you !

  • Your accent is awesome

  • haha F holes ... I know immature but I cant help myself :D

  • @Midoriko2nd

don't worry i'm sure few people can LOL

  • i love your passion and master-like tutorial. thanks

  • I've been playing the cello for 4 years now, but it's good to go back to the beginning and build a strong foundation to my playing

  • he seems like a cool guy but most cello players look down on other instrument players just because of the cellos price range, i wonder how he would feel about the one im making in my workshop... also that cello is a wreck, im suprised he hasnt thrown out the cello considering those dents and nicks have killed his soundboard and the instruments voice

  • he seems like a cool guy but most cello players look down on other instrument players just because of the cellos price range, i wonder how he would feel about the one im making in my workshop...

  • I apply your principles to my humble beginnings on the cello and ureka RESULTS ! The foundations for playing are recognised by wonderful teachers. Thank you very much for your help.

  • Dude, a better way to describe the cello is through a graphic representation with words and lines that mean stuff. Check out Royksopp's 'Remind Me' video for a pastiche starter

  • He totally owns that bow tie...

  • Love these videos! So encouraging, you make everything easy to understand! I played as a young child, but was discouraged. You have inspired me to pick up my old cello and start again.

  • I was like "This is interesting" and when I heard his accent I was like "OH YEAH!" For some reason I assume learning from an older guy with an accent means I'll be taught correctly but hey, I was right! XD yay me!

Now....if only I had a cello around to actually practice with.

  • LarissaFMattos (Video 02 - n.1/JSBach Prelude)

  • Badass Pinky Ring is badass.

  • hahaha

  • I don't have a cello yet. But I have a 4-string bass guitar. I tuned it to a cello and I'm now following as if it were a cello.

I'm definitely getting a beginner's cello this Christmas.

  • Thank you sooo much, you have the rare ability to make things easy.

You surely are an inspiration to study

  • This is probably the Only teacher you should learn from on Youtube, Not that teacher on Expert village.

  • thumbs up if your taking these to try to play apocalyptica

  • @bonkai991 I all ready have their song Fisheye, you can get it at Harmageddon publishing, just google it.

  • @deedee9221 thank you so much ill check it out when i get my cello

  • @bonkai991 i used to know but i was dumb and thought clarinet was better.... but yeah that would b me :)... i bet you dont care

  • @bonkai991 damn freakin' right I am :)

  • @bonkai991 yeap

  • @FluturasNuMaiAiAripi LOL! anyways I wonder why this guy is teaching beginners how to use the bow 1st? In middle school where there was a strings class, the teacher said "put down that bow!, you are going to learn how to pluck first!". I always thought plucking a song was easier than playing it with a bow. So when you get the hang of it plucking, you pick up the bow and play. I sort of got over doing that when I went to the faster music, like- "The flight of the Bumble bee" no sluring and such.

  • wow this guy is a badass

  • I have a question. I noticed that they come in sizes. Bothe me and my grandmother want to learn how to play and i was wondering how can you tell what size to get?

  • @whatitsjustme if you or your grandmother arent very small, you should take an 4/4 Cello. It´s the ´´normal´´ size for adult people.

  • @whatitsjustme As long as you guys are over 5' then u can get the full size. 4/4. If one of you is taller, you can pull out more of the endpin. hope this helps

  • Super Lessons!

  • Thank you.

    Leo

  • I think he's Dutch. Hans spreek Nederlands.

  • This guy is great! Thank you for your thorough cello instruction

  • hey look the f holes xD

  • I've just bought my first cello, a beautiful Benedikt Lang. I have a teacher but I'm going to study the first few lessons of this program before I go to him. These videos are the best, very clear and simple instructions. Thank you so much!

  • @marasky2482

Isn't that cello a little much for your first cello? Dang, I'd like to see what your end cello is!

  • i think you're absolutely brilliant, thank you so much

  • why am i getting no noise when i run the bow over the strings?

  • hi!! i play cello and im a beginner...i like these youtube lessons cos its the summer holidayys and my teacher has gone to spain...i want to be a classical cellist in an orchesttra...im 12!! ;)

  • I'm sorry but if you want to play cello even average you will have to pay 3 thousand dollars a year for private instruction.

  • hi my name is michael, iam new to the cello and have a great passion for the instruament, however i find that tuning the cello is a bit difficult (its not like my guitars tuning pegs thats for shure)... any advice on tuning correctly? please

  • @MrBigmike829 The cello is tuned in 5ths, with the highest string being A, then D, G, and C. if you're cello has never been tuned before, then you should get a professional to tune it for you until you know the notes by ear. If you want to try tuning by yourself, you can reply to me.

  • @cellogal1994 hhmm. thank you, that information will be very usefull. How ever (perhaps i should have worded this more directly) My main problem lies in the tuning pegs.. I need advise on the friction of the pegs,, sometimes they can slip out, and i was wondering if i could get some advise on that aspect.. i would greatly appritieate it :)

  • @MrBigmike829 It could be one of two problems: 1. the pegs could just be slightly loose. in that case, you can buy some liquid from a strings shop that when you put it on the pegs, they will have more friction. or 2. the pegs may be too loose, and you'll have to replace them which could get expensive. If you want the liquid, ask a person in a musical store. sorry, i forget what the liquid is called.

  • @cellogal1994 Awsome, :) thank you very very much. ill take my cello with me to the store when i get the fluid. But agian, thank you, you have been very heplfull :)

  • i liked your cello video alot thanks!

  • awesome very helpful

  • hi im switching from the saxophone....i really dont kno anything wat would u recomend

  • These videos are brilliant! I'm about to start learning to play the cello, these lessons are really helpful, thank you!

  • I'm a cello newbie and my right arm and finger tips were HURTING the first few days. But that's the small price to pay for beautifull music. :)

  • Gotta love Germans. This guy really knows how to teach. His website is under reconstruction or I'd be buying this right now.

  • Puxa vida Sr. Queixoso!!

    B.M. :-)

  • So i am interested in cello, and I am looking for information on what cellos are good to learn on. I'd like the fullsize as presented in this video, but have limited knowledge on the instrument....

can someone please direct me to where i can find out information such as this,, or inform me? I'd greatly appreciate it.

  • @Simplybehonest Best place to go is a music store in your area that specializes in violins/cellos. They'll glance at you and know what size you need. Takes a lot of patience and dedication but very rewarding if you stick with it. A professional Cellist told me not long ago that the Cello is an instrument you never stop learning on. 30 years later he still finds better ways to shift and transition his left hand.

  • I should watch these videos at night... learn more and sleep more :D

  • German accent, never gets old.

  • Wonderful videos! Are these available on DVD? I clicked the link, but I get a 404 error. I googled him but didn't have much luck there either. I'd love to buy a set of these vids, maybe several to give as gifts.

  • Wonderful !

In my studio, students learn the bow hold very quickly using the CelloPhant[tm] bow accessory. The accessory keeps the hand relaxed and fingers in place while we learn more music.

    Thanks!

  • you are unique

  • Merci!!!!

  • is there any cello for sale in the Philippines? if there's any, how much?

  • @19971602 you can find them in music stores like Lyric (which sells Bachendorf), and JB Music (which sells Hofner). I bought mine in JB music for about Php28k.

  • I have played the cello for about 3years. Everytime after I practiced only less than a hour I kind of felt pain in my shoulder. Watching your lesson, I realized I got serious problems in bowing. Thank you so much for your precious lessons.

  • I play violin okay. I got my first cello yesterday, and kind of fought with it a bit. Now I see the differences. Can't thank you enough for this. You are a good teacher. I will try everything you said, and then I'll go on to the other lessons. You remind me of my teachers back in music school. Thanks again.

  • This is a very informative video. Spasibo!

  • no but "the bow is a stick" that just made me crack up ;0

  • I see.. it's all in the instrument, not the music!

  • oh thanks, that help me a lot. are you german?

  • Your video is really great!

    Thank you very much!

  • nice man,i playing elbasse for 15 years and now want to change to chello..ur video is really helpfull ;] thanks

  • hahahaha nice vid but gotta point out there... 0:54 "f holes" lol oh and i do play the cell by the way :) anyways 5 star 4 u =D

  • The cello and the viola are two of my favorite symphonic chordophones .

  • I never heard someone call them chordophones before. Could you explain?

  • A chordophone is any instrument that uses vibrating strings as a method of making sound. So guitars violin cello viola are all chordophones. ;)

  • Ah I see. That makes sense so it's really a different name for instruments in the string family. Thank you for that!

  • this is a beautiful cello

  • I love that heartfelt scale in the beginning- the pizzicato almost made me cry :]

  • @ministryaremorons yes the cello is a somber instrument that can make aniyone cry!!

  • @MsCellobass Seriously i agree

  • i think he's german. very german accent (i'm german) XD

  • his name is hungarian/austrian

  • Bravo! Encore! Amazing!

Thank you very much for this video, Queixoso and to Herr Zentgraf, wherever that gentleman is.

Many people underestimate the training and nuance required to play this most beautiful instrument. I hope this video helps everyone as it has helped me, and that it inspires the grand sound of human music to be generated across the world.

  • F-Hole is a pervy name ^^

  • "Hi, dear freinds... This is your beloved cello."

    sounds funny...

  • i was wondering well ive always loved classical music i play classical guitar and i was wondering ??whats a gud cello and how much duz it cost??like brands of gud cellos and prices

  • a good celo can cost any where from 15thousand to a couple hundred thousand to millions, noit including the bow a good bow costs 3 thousand and a good case about 2 or 3 thousand as well.(expensive!!!! i know)

  • um for like pros u can get a cello for 15 hundred or as low as 275 and bows can be from 30 to 50 and its not the instrument but rather the player

  • of corse a pro can get a cello for 15hundred or as low as 275$ and still sound good, but if they really want to sound good they wld buy an expensive instrument, i bet no one in a pressional symphony has an instrument for less then 3 thousand dolllars, and for soloist that like trash to them(even thought it wldnt b for me lol) but btw do u play an instrument?

  • An average beginning cello runs around $1000-2000, a bow from $100-500 and a hard case is about $400.

Professional instruments (for use in a full time orchestra) typically start at around $100,000, though you will find people playing on cheaper instruments for various reasons. A professional bow can cost anywhere between $4,000 and millions of dollars. The highest price ever for a cello is $20 million.

  • What the hell makes an orchestral instrument $100,000? What's the difference between a $5,000 instrument and one of those? Is the former laced in gold and hundreds of years old; does it play any differently, or is it just status?

  • A comparison is needed. What's the difference between a stock Chevy and a Nascar Chevy..The same is true with instruments, as well as hamburgers..lol

  • I second that statement.

  • @MrSquitwet what makes an instrument expensive or cheap it of course the production process, but the most important thing is the sound of the wood. Each peace of same wood type has a different potenctial of sound ability even if its from the same tree, like each human has a different voice. The second thing is the age, like a good whisky wood sounds better trough time, that is why an old instrument in a good condition has a uniqe sound and is expensive.

  • i got my first cello for $300 aud

  • My 8 y.o. daughter and I start lessons next week--this is the best video I've found so far. Very well done--thank you!

  • my god! what is the makeof that cello? what sound!

  • My little sister has a cello she can play the jaws theme and she watches this to learn more =]

  • Thank you very much for sharing. You really helped out us fellow cello beginners.

  • very usefull! could use these tips!

    Thank you!

  • Very informative, and very helpful. Thanks! ^^

  • This man's diction is outstanding, every term he uses to explain himself is perfect. I'll be watching all of these.

  • Thank you so much!!^^

  • This is wonderful... Hans... Thank You for sharing your expertise with the Cello...

  • I CAN"T thank you enough,Hans...Thank you.Thank you.Thank you....
