I just saw something like this today. There were two straight white lines across the bluishgrey sky and I thought they were jet streams at first. Then, they started tearing apart as they began to look more like gigantic waves crashing. Finally, parts of the streaks started swirling. Within about ten minutes the sky looked like a normal storm cloud display (all puffy and dark, mostly uninteresting). I'm not sure what class of cloud this is, but around these parts, a rare treat for sure.
now this is the type of videos that need to be used for storm spottering and learning what to look for while spotting severe weather. great time lapse set up. wish it was longer too. be safe out there.
felainakinew: they do contain lightning, because its a thunderstorm, and this video was showing a supercell, which is the most powerful type of thunderstorm, and the largest type. these storms are most common in the Midwestern United States, they get this stuff all the time during the summer.
There are several hypotheses for different variations of the cloud, but all form from turbulence in the cloud (from various causes) that creates eddies of wind. One observation implies that they are the weak remnents of these eddies. All forms indicate instability and that the storm can be severe. If you were in a plane right next to them, they would appear almost transparent.
