  • What makes me giggle is that most of these dolls—Nina on the Top 10 natch-rally— had such strict upbringings and they turned out to be superb artists. I guess the early discipline explains the freedom they found in the music, as well as their perfect knowledge of their art. No monkey business.

  • I'm just a poor fool that's bluer than blue can be

  • Mood Indica

  • 11 people ain't never been blue.

  • Can someone please tell me what the name of this song is? I want to know so bad, but I dont know where to look for it, seeing as I only know the song by it's tune. It's not "Minnie the Moocher," though many people have tried to tell me it is. Anyways, can someone please please tell me the name of the first song heard in this video??

    watch?v=Rtz1hN_NiXM&noredirect=1

  • Her piano part is a pure masterpiece.

  • personally, i like this kind of faster, more frantic version. The slower ones just sort of bore me sometimes, though I do like Sinatra's version of the song. The original with just the instrumentals is also quite nice, but nina simone is a personal favorite.

  • 1:17 -- great chord voicing -- great, juicy space before she starts to sing. genius

  • songs like this make me think that humans see color different because to me this song just doesnt fit my idea of indigo. of course a great song

  • perfect!!!

  • What an amazing intro...

Difícil creer, escuchando esa musica que esa mujer era depresiva! Que fuerza de la naturaleza! Que swing, que ritmo, que pasión.!

    Una verdadera inspiración!

  • i am new to the jazz so are there any bands i really should know?

  • @Stephh211

There are many ways to explore the world of jazz and really your best of finding your own way but.. some names:

Jazz singers: Sarah Vaughan; Ella Fitzgerald Others: Charlie Parker; Miles Davis

still live performing: Diana Krall, Chick Corea

  • @Kredeidi I was just thinking about how nowadays diana krall pulls off this kind of jazz piano. her intro on "love being here with you" is as amazing and groovy!

  • @jayweh comparing diana krall and nina?

  • @Urbino237 piano skills wise, yes. Have you heard "I love being here with you"? singing wise and charisma, no. :)

  • @jayweh I am out of my depth; I have no piano training. Benny Green's comment puts it well I think: "Anyone could learn what Louis Armstrong knows about music in a few weeks. Nobody could learn to play like him in a thousand years." As with Louis' music I can listen to Nina's (piano playing alone) over and over and never tire of it. Both are quickly recognized for who they are. But to my ear - in the blindfold test - Diana's piano playing could be almost any present-day jazz piano performer.

  • @Urbino237 that´s so great about our world: everyone is entitled to their own opinion. :)

  • @Stephh211 aahaa!! many bands,,,many era's,,,many styles,,,bluesy jazz,,,uptempo jazz,,,bebop jazz,,,hard bop jazz,,,jazz vocalists,,,piano jazz,,,trumpet jazz,,,saxophone jazz,,,vibes jazz,,,drum jazz,,,ETC. !!! all yours to explore & enjoy,,,have fun on your journey & keep an open mind !! OLE !!

  • @Stephh211 yes

  • Also a relative newcomer to Nina Simone, yeah I heard her in my youth, but was too much into rock and roll. I missed so much really great music listening to crap.

  • @Bnosrettaptrebor welcome back :)

  • what a bunch of newbies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The best version of "Mood Indigo"!...Jazz with a touch of pop??:-)

  • A song for every mood

  • singing starts at 1:19 for those of you who care..

  • 11 dislikes? Really? This is the best version of this song ever. Nina's vocals, the band, the arrangement, everything is perfect. Love you, Nina!

  • Just getting into Jazz, there is nothing like it!

  • Comment removed

  • This does sound like Ellington's "Mood Indigo"?

  • I think she's playing the piano on this one

  • Nina put a record out when I was just getting into jazz back in the fifties. Central Park Blues, was the name. I still think to this day it is some of the best of her work.

I have always loved her intricate piano style which comes from classical study earlier in her life. I believe she attended Juliard. Her talent is extraordinary, not only her voice but her abilities on the piano make her performances riveting, and captivating, hard to get out of your head if you really listen.Miss you sugar.

  • I love the drums in this peace. That polyrhythm hi-hat at 2:30, massive!

  • @jeromecremers - YES! the hi-hat and brushes are stupendous, mind boggling and humbling. I am in awe of drummers.....all that counting......OMG!

  • SIMONE WAS A GREAT CONCERT PIANIST AS WELL AS A JAZZ MUSCIAN.

    THE INCOMPARABLE NINA SIMONE!!!!

    WE MISS YOU SO.

    --MO

  • music bill cosby would dance to

  • @kingdul5 lol

  • @kingdul5 LOL! Now you know you got that right!

  • @kingdul5 bill cosby did love jazz and actually was a jazz drummer

  • Pretty and surprising!

  • Is this not the best piece of recorded song ever?

  • Another wonderful Bach invention from 42 to 1.00 secs

  • oh god this is amazing

  • Once in a while the world is touched with someone with incredible life and talent, Nina Simone is really the greatest singer I have heard who can express emotions especially the feeling of dispair, sadness and futility of life. I love her song feeling and mood indigo. The word greatness was invested for people like her.

  • Love, love ,love the piano.

  • I believe she was 19 when she recorded this album. It's from her first album, "Little Girl Blue. " I am downloading now from iTunes.

  • ...that feeeeelin' goes steeeeealing down to my shoes.

  • LOVE IT, that's all....

  • love it! she makes me cry ... but she makes me smile too ... ty for the shares :)

  • yeah of course she plays the piano...thats part of the hold idea... ;-)

  • Does she play the piano solo in this song?

  • I got goosebumps just listened to this...awesome...

  • classic...1:22 of great jazz music then beautiful lyrics...OMG I see why so many people sample her is amazing

  • @MILONGEIRO

    My dear, can't you read...?

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely one of the "touched" ones! An incredible artist that truely needs to be admired and willfully worshipped! Just listening to the intonation gets the tears welling up!

  • Though most of The Juilliard School Alums probably don't know it, this woman is one of their MOST BRILLIANT (fellow) ALUMS, HERSELF!!!!!!

  • niina the queeeeen

  • i play this on my mp3,while i am at work.man i can,t walk in a straight line without swinging and clicking my fingers to this cool tune

  • She is wonderful.

  • why is this so upbeat? I like it but I always thought of mood indigo as a depressing song, she sounds like shes glad her man left. Listen to frank sinatras version and youll see what I'm talking about

  • @greyk <-- thats what Jazz aBOUT - the License to take a melody, harmony, metre, and turn it upside down, tear it to shreds, make it something else. there IS a manic note in her rendition - its the way she felt at the moment, i guess. maybe you like another version better for that reason, but those of us who love Jazz love it beCAUSE of this.. that said, Simone was brilliant - think i hear a Bach fugue in her piano introduction - nevertheless i like a more "down" version of Mood Indigo too..

  • @zhaydhee You're correct it's barely recognizable to the version I just heard the Duke and his band perform.

  • classic jazz

  • Realy like the scaater and the beat ,,,time of beeboope and jazz!!!

    Have A nice summer!!!!

  • Aye! This is a brilliant version of Mood Indigo. I love you Nina!!!!

  • love and joy to nina

  • wow - and oh by the way - is that her playing the piano too? double wow?

  • @jansumi yes, that's her on piano, isn't she amazing?

  • OMGosh i love itttttttt !!!!!!

  • The best vocalist, any genre, any gender, any era, ever.

  • This should be in Webster dictionary as a definition for "Perfection"

  • Yeah! Hot stuff!!

  • oh yes :) i love it :)

  • A truly inspiring singer she is

  • shes had that Mood indigo ... you can just feel it

  • Miss Nina OWNED this song! The best interpretation of this song ever. One of the finest song interpreters of our time. She took a song and kicked ass with it. Dear God, why don't we have artists like Nina Simone these days.

  • @butfulmuzik you ain't never lied honey!! And that's a damn question...I honestly think "so-called" "artists" nowadays lack SUBSTANCE, DEPTH & true LOVE for their craft...everyone is chasing the all mighty dollar...No one "mainstream" has true love for what they do...!! That's just my guestamation...PEACE...and keep loving music of substance!!!

  • @Socaiona I loved your reply to my comment and I agree with you all the way. We were blessed with artists who were our rich treasures-- Miss Nina, Miss Billie Holiday, Miss Sarah Vaughan, Miss Ella Fitzgerald, just to name a few. They have been the very strong backbone of some of the best music ever and they have filled my heart with such incredible joy and gratitude to have experienced and enjoyed their artistry.

  • @butfulmuzik LOL! and I absolutely loved your reply to my reply...it truly shows that you're definitely NOT "brand new" to music of substance by the few female vocalists you listed..I absolute love Dinah Washington's "I'm a fool to want you"...man...that's called out a few cleansing tears...and "Angel Eyes" is another favorite track the chords and arrangement resonates very deeply with my moody self a lot of times!...

  • @Socaiona Oh, now when you mention Miss Dinah Washington's name, you are talking about an angel who was loaned to earth. She was first class in every way, and we lost that sweet woman way too soon. It always inspires me that all of these incredible artists were so unique and individual. You could close your eyes and someone could put any one of their songs on, and you would immediately know who it was by their voice. No one has ever done them better!

  • Bold, eccentric, andragynous, brave...that was Nina Simone..a true talent. She fused elements of jazz, gospel, bebop in her music & the arrangements were brillant!!! thanks much for this adition morisson0909!!! I've been tryin' to fine her 'Blue Prelude' song...think u can help a brotha out? Thats also a goose bumps/hair raiser tune of her's...love her, miss her...Nina rocks!!!

  • @foggy4180.... how right u r .... timing is it here

  • this is absolutely perfect.

  • Timing is an essential part of the swing in music and here's a perfect example of it.

Nina is wonderful here but it's the backing of the band that makes it complete, so unbelievable tight.

The intensity of her voice and playing in this song send shivers through my spine every time I hear it,wow!

  • Nina - I just discovered you here in 2010. Oh, have I ever missed a lot. She really did jazz her own way, but what a great way that is. Her amazing Bach/Jazz improvs on the piano are pure delight. Of course, her unique voice and earth-mother personality just do you good, if you are a human.

  • I just started listening to her about two years ago. A must have purchase is To Be Free: The Nina Simone collection. 4 cds of all of her best songs and unreleased tracks plus a video documentary

  • Welcome to the club :-) Enjoy!

  • @not2tees drugs?

  • @not2tees Earth mother personality?!?! Look up her rendition of "Pirate Jenny!"

  • @not2tees If you only just found about her in 2010, imagine all the other brilliant music you haven't and probably never will discover,. *sigh* there just isn't enough time.

  • @ecclesiasticous That's one of the best things to cultivate, when faced with the twin forces of art and time--humility. You can never know enough to know enough. You just have to turn to artists like Nina and humble yourself to the indescribably mastery they drop in your lap, and find a way to let your immeasurable gratitude be enough.

  • I hope you have heard !wild is the wind! and !I get along without you very well"....better late than never! Welcome to the club!

There are so many great hits. Nina made 50 or I think 60 Album and I have them all. Always known of Nina but I didn't truly discovered her until about 5 years ago when I was 17!

  • if nina simone and tom waits were to do an album together, i cant imagine how much intense that would be... their music are not from the same style, but no one can match their intensity in their musics.

  • They don't get any better than Nina!

  • Not my fav of Lady Simone's songs..too jazzy for me.

  • @Maskedhaven: might B 2 jazzy 4 U & that's OK w/ me. Your opinion certainly has my respect. But 2 me this woman is drenched in jazz! Also don't forget: "Mood Indigo" is a standard in the jazz canon; so why wouldn't it be jazzy? But my opinion doesn't matter either, 'cause we both love her. Am I correct? Best regards.

  • I've been listening to Ms. Nina since i was in my mom's womb, and every time it gets better!

  • Actually a piece of Bach in there. Great music meats great music.

  • Also in "Love me or leave me" she drifts into Bach - just brilliant. Her counter point as she also sings takes the breath away

  • That IS amazing she can actually play and sing two different tempi.
