I am afraid you are mistaken. A convex lens of any size will focus a beam of any size down to a point. The beam on my laser is only about 1.2 millimeters across yet the magnifying glass focuses that down to a point the size of the point on a pin.

didn't have one at the time. also this laser is actually doing about 70mW and so it does need to be focused.

the magnifiying glass won't work that close, the beam needs to have expanded to the size of the lens before any concentrating happens. Like the sun
