  • Roger Bobo is the better player but I like oystein's interpretation of this song better.

  • Oystein sucks

  • Thumbs up if the l.a. times article brought you here

  • if it were possible to have chuck daellenbach (candian brass) to have a child... you can fill in your own response on that one.

  • legendary soloist

  • Bobo is a fucking perfect name for a tuba player.

  • VIVA! maestro

  • strepitoso!!!

  • roger bobo is great, but that piano player does not know in the slightest bit how to follow a soloist

  • の一言

  • すごい

  • Yes, just yes.

  • This tuba is the Miraphone 180 (an F). I've heard of 5 valve eb's but never 6 valve eb's. Anyone know of one?

  • which version of carnival of venice is this?

  • It's tuber, not tubist.

  • @2010MRHBK NOOB you obviosly don't know the proper term for a tuba player

  • I prefer Bill Bell's version. Oddly, both tubist used horns that were considered inferior by their peers.

  • i liked this but i preffer oystein baadzvik's version :D

  • Dude, this guy is my new mentor for tone and speed. I saw this video a while back and have been playing my ass off to get this good ever since.

  • Roger bobo is my new hero for 2:00 +

  • It's an F tuba, not a BBb or an Eb..

  • Does anybody know what mouthpiece he's using?

  • has any one got the music for this. I have started learning tuba and would want to be able to play this!!

  • @tptman001 Look in the Arban Book. It's not easy, I'll tell you that much, especially since you are barely starting

  • @tptman001 play hours everyday for the next 20 years and you might be able to

  • @tptman001 Private message me your email and i will send you a Pdf file and an mp3 file. of the music. if you still want it.

  • @yunolks3 Could you possibly send it to me also, im a tuba player my self and im looking for something challenging.

  • i believe this is on a BBb horn

  • @PCTubaTyler it happens to be a Eb notice the extra valves up by the left hand

  • @elbeaner6 oh i didnt see that

  • @elbeaner6 please tell me, in what book or from what teacher, have you ever heard that two extra valves automatically means that its an Eb tuba? haha. this is an F tuba. many F tubas have 6 valves (4+2), and many Eb tubas have 6 valves (4+2). there is no rule anywhere stating any differently. BBb and CC tubas generally use 5 valves so you can play as low as needed. many Eb and F tubas also have 5 valves, but often have 6, so the low range can be played in tune on a higher instrument.

  • Wow i dident know a tuba could even play that fast........ This man is the most epic tuba player ever period.-TubaGirl

  • I played tuba in high school for 3 years... it is a hard instrument to get the feel & timing for... a lot of dexterity and strength required.

  • this was when the tonight show was great.

  • Not a big fan of his tone but he has great technical skills!

  • @tubamarc8891 Then again it is an old recording so that can be to blame for that

  • @tubamarc8891 are you drunk?

  • IMO, There's no such thing as "the best." Music shouldn't be all about becoming "the best." It's all about making music and bringing your own interpretation to the table.

  • @tubadude07 Yes!!! I concur.

  • @tubadude07 besides we all know Oystein is the best anyways ;)

  • i think oystein baadsvik is now the best tuba player

  • He is the greatest tuba player ever. But 20 years from now the title "greatest tuba player ever" will be mine. And I'm going to be on whatever talk show happens to come on. Hahahaha

  • GREATEST TUBA PLAYER EVER!!!

  • He tongues better than oystien baadsvic

  • @UhopIhop1997 But none of them sound as clean as Michael Lind.

  • Like a tuba player is ever gonna be on the Tonight Show again.

  • If Jesus were a tuba player...

  • oh those godly fingers...

  • i am in love with this song now because i saw roger bobo play it, ive seen it so many times and im amazed everytime, he is great and i only wish i could be half as good as him

  • the last variation... damn... on Tuba... jeez... Roger Bobo is always gonna be amazing.

  • My dad took lessons from this guy

  • my favorite is wilfried brandstotter

  • @LtGerbal are there recordings on youtube where brandstötter plays solos (not mnozil brass)

  • @1991tuba No, he never does any solo's. Although he has the ability to play any solo he wants he always likes the back seat not the driver's position, which i guess is why we all play the tuba. He truly is an amazing tuba player though

  • why don't we see sam or jim or pat on the late night shows? I'd actually watch late night TV if they had more performances like this.

  • That norwegian guy plays sh1t, this is the best tuba player i hav seen, his tounging and notes are so clearly. Otewask or whatever u call him, sounds like playing 10 notes at a time, ugly sounding!! Forceful playing!! He is better off catching salmon for the Japanese.

  • @MXZEem I have to agree with you, although i like Oystein's technical abilities and speed, but his playing can get pretty mushy. I favor Roger because of his articulation and accuracy.

  • @2E0N0W2 :D, Glad we share the same views, and sorry for my language in the previous post.

  • @MXZEem haehaehaeh, you don't know what you're talking about at all! Both of them are awesome tubists, and i like Roger Bobo very much. But Baadsvik can do things with the tuba that no one else in the world can do. So before talk shit about the world greatest tuba-player, let me hear you do the same things as him

  • His playing is so much clearer than I'd hoped for! :D Very good!

  • that was pretty good. Personally , i like oystein baadsvik more

  • man roger is still very beastly he gives leasons now

  • my hero!!! im a tubst and i model my career after his!

  • Amazing! At 3:49 he starts the long climb up to a D5 and then just ends with that wonderful pedal Bb! As a trombonist, I know how hard a solid sound on a D5 is for us; it's hard to imagine a tubist even reaching an in-tune D5, the equivalent of a D6 on a tenor trombone!!! Bobo is the best!

  • @OliverKahnNr1 Are you sure the last note is a Pedal Bb? sounds just like a loud and flappy Bb.. and im not sure but i think he's playing one of those 6 valve F-tubas.. which would be really hard to hit a note that low

  • @2E0N0W2 It is. I've played this piece and I'm pretty sure it's the same arrangement. It's just a low Bb. Not pedal

  • caraca!mas que embocadura violenta esse cara tem na tuba, nem parece uma tuba e sim um bombardino, show!show!vibrei.

  • este señor es un monstruo con esa tuba ,ademas tiene un sonido muy vacano

  • its amazing he played it on tuba

  • as far as comunication between the players go not as clean of a performance but none the less a difficult piece and really well played on both parts! good job!

  • That was epic Thanx for uploading...

  • this video show why he put tuba on the map and was the first tuba solist in carnigie hall!!

  • thats amazing tone the guy's got =]

  • roger bobo was at one time the world's greatest tuba player.

  • @williebeaty was?

  • Uh Huh

  • una potenza

  • whoa!!!!!

  • AND he got called to the couch. There was no higher honor.

  • amazing!!!!

  • LOOK AT HIS FINGERS!!!!!!!!

  • that double tounging is crazy

  • @MrKomKast , it sounds like triple tounging at some parts even O_0

  • god damn!!

  • great player

i didnt know George Lucas played tuba

  • more like kenny rogers

  • hahaha

  • man i love playing tuba i sooo want this 2 be my solo this year <3

  • that was my solo i swaer

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow amazing!!!!!!! very very very difficult on Tuba!!!!

  • i think i'm in love

  • AMAZING

  • wow. when is the last time you saw a musician of this level. on this type of show. and the audience really enjoys it. that would never occur today

  • you're right, people just dont appreciate music today like they used to. definitely a phenomenal musician

  • regardless of whether or not he ever made a D tuba (I'm incredulous), this recording is definitely on an F. If you watch the fingerings as he plays, he has to be on an F tuba.

  • to me they were not together most of the time but both were good

  • the first thing is WOW. i am a tubist at lamar high school this is inspiring

  • He's great, no doubt. But in the beginning of the second variation he was way to fast. The piano player had realy trouble to get his tempo. Newer the less - Very Good.

  • muito massa

  • I like Bobo's ending better than anyone else i've heard. This version is very musical where as Baadsvik's version is more virtuosic

  • THats how i started out. mom said to start on piano and i learned the basics like note names scales dynamics and so on. and finally in six grade i started out on trumpet. i had a wonderful band director name Mr. Wolcott who happens to be the director og the 59th army band. and when i went into middle school he needed a tuba player so I voluntered and as roger said it felt right and i liked it. and now i'm still playing it and going off to the high band Las Plumas which is a really good band.

  • hes gr8! gr8! gr8! My teacher studyd at roger bobo, so i must be in good hands=)

  • I play clarinet and have definitely seen this piece many times and I love his tone intonation and playing style!

  • My teacher actually played in a orchestra conducted my Roger Bobo. I find that amazing. He's a trumpet teacher. Even though i play tuba

  • Anyone know if this is his Eb?

  • im prettty sure its an f tuba because i've never heard of an eb tuba with a fifth valve but i could be wrong

  • Willson makes a 5 valve Eb now, but it's almost certainly an F he's playing.

  • Baadsviks' Starlight and Norwegian Star both have fifth valves that operate in minor thirds.

  • this is great but both Baadsvik and Paul Borg are better in my opinion.

  • Roger Bobo is my hero.

  • He is everyone's hero.

  • Every tubists hero..

  • He is my new hero and I play french horn. :O

This guy's an inspiration, no matter which way you look at it. :D

  • id say baadsvik is more of an inspiration to me but i still think bobo is great

  • this guy is great i have only been playin tuba for 3 years and i thought i was good because i got asked to travel with a orchestra in europe but i could only hope to be this good some day

  • I didn't know Sean Connery played the tuba!

  • rofl

  • I just got my Roger bobo Signature symphonic mouthpiece. :D

  • oh those are VERY nice.

so well balanced and great for supporting a large ensemble :)

  • Well If that dont get my drunk butt up off the web to practice i dont know what will

  • I want to be this good one day.

I told someone awhile back there is no tuba player I've heard that would almost make me wanna quit and thay said search for Roger Bobo and I found this.

I've gotta say, my middle school and high school band director both told me I'm one of the best they've had and it gets boring when the older tuba players are worse than you and you have no one to really look up to or play like, but this is pretty inspiring.

Started in 6th grade in 10th now and Ima keep playing

  • Sean Conery play tuba

  • O.O

  • Bobo is freakin amazing, but I have to say I like Baadsviks tone better. I think Bobos is too, um.... violent, or rough for me.

  • Amazing! I have not words....

  • this gave me a boner

  • So good it makes me weep. When I saw this "live" on Carson as a high school tuba player, it inspired me to practice hard enough to make all-state band. Thanks, Roger.

  • What year was this? I'm guessing 1983 or 1984. Please reply, thanks.

  • Probably 83. I don't remember much of 84-my first year at college. :)

  • Is the the Arban arrangement or something he did himself?

  • i think it's the arban arrangement with a few minor changes. he skips the 2nd variation i think.

  • complimenti grande maestro.

vorrei essere tanto come lei come si fa?

    tantissimi complimenti

  • this version is far more adventurous than baadsviks though who is 'better' is unanswerable and incalculable. better than me!

  • Him and Baadsvik...Are so good...I love hearing there stuff

  • there's just something about bobo's tone that i love.

  • that was awesome

  • GO BOBO!

  • superb.

  • THE BOBO!!!!!!! One need not say anything more.

  • he really is a superb player...

  • omg... its Roger Bobo...

  • I think Pat could, I know Harvey Phillips could take him on 2 !

  • You mean Patrick Sheridan? Hah! Not even on his best day could he take Roger Bobo. Roger Bobo is tuba playing.

  • This guy is AWSOME!!! but there is one person that might match him or beat him.... V.F. Cervany ( i think thats how u spell it )

  • Arnold Jacops, Patrick (something with an "sh" in it.) could both take him.

  • Jacobs really wasn't known for his crazy technical ability and Sheridan doesn't have near the sound and accuracy of Bobo.

  • Pat's more of a crowd pleaser, in technical skill, Bobo could probably win. I bet Dr. Charles Daellenbach (sp?) could probably come close, he's pretty good...MAYBE Oysteen Baadsvik...but who knows. I think all listed would at least be in the same league, which is better than you or me XD

  • It's extremely hard to compare tubists, even impossible, in my opinion. I just really enjoy listening to them and their very different ways of playing the tuba.

  • It's hard to compare tubist:

But there NOONE like Bobo. Noone before, and noone since.

  • Arnold Jacobs.... look him up.

  • Yeah...I know who Arnold Jacobs is...

....THERE IS NOONE LIKE ROGER BOBO.

  • pat and sam my friend- pat and sam. BAM!

  • They are fantastic.

THERE IS NOONE LIKE ROGER BOBO!

I don't understand this amateurish fascination with deciding who is "the best." I'm not trying to say Bobo is the BEST: but he is extremely revolutionary in the progress of the Tubist.

Before Bobo there were great tubist.

After Bobo there are great musicians who play the tuba.

    That is a fact.

  • Have you actually listened to any of Baadsviks actual recordings? I think he's just as good, if not better, than anybody up here.

  • Buddy Baadsvik IS the best...He's the definition of perfect...lol

  • cerveny

  • I met Roger Once, he did a workshop for our camp when he was play for the R.S.O. He played flight of the bumblebee on tuba :D

  • I had to watch this over and over it was awesome

  • I like the music right at 4:05.

  • if i can play this half as well as he does here one day, i think i will be happy

  • I agree. I play tuba and want to do so professionally. If I were half that good, I would be set for life.

  • haha, yeah. i've relized because of this video that i will need to be able to double tounge quickly on the tuba. =P

  • way more than that. You'll have to be able to do EVERYTHING with it. lol

  • Triple tonguing, there's really not a lot of double tounging in the movements he played.

  • (jaw drops)

    amazing.

  • I'll take Bobo in an orchestra over any other player every to play--what a sound

  • OH

    MY

    TUBA!!!!!!

  • THE MAN

  • WOW...

  • my idol
