Alice in Wonderland has never been one of my favorite stories, but I remember this one when I was little. I loved it and I, too had the record. I also had a HB version of Bambi on a record Mrs. Flintstone told that version. I loved the songs in this version and Alice falling through the TV set with Fluff. I did a web search and found a VHS of this with very low quality for 5 dollars. I bought it, never the less. It's of course, not a video with a copyright if you get my drift.I'm from Selma,AL
I just went to see the new movie yesterday, it was very, very good. I just wish this one was available on video to buy. I remember seeing it last around 1970.
I loved this. I used to listen to the record all the time. It got scratched, and I surely didn't care. I still think about it from time to time. Wish is was available on DVD.
I saw this in rerun during the 1969 Christmas Season. I have always remembered the line "The potato chips are soggy and they water the beer." Sammy wa one Hep Cat!
Thank you so much for uploading this video that I have not seen since 1966! This was followed by the first record I bought in my life, seeing it at the store by HBRecords - I still have this record, thank you for sharing these priceless memories with the older generation who grew up with the magic of HB Productions.
Sammy was under exclusive contact to Reprise records in 1966, and could not recreate his portion of the special on Hanna-Barbera records; "Scat Man" Crothers had to fill in for him on the album. Same thing happened when Sammy appeared in the 1959 movie version of "Porgy and Bess"; Decca wouldn't allow his voice to be used on Columbia's soundtrack recording...Cab Calloway replaced him on that album.
While Sammy Davis Jr did this TV version, when it was released to record Scatman crutherrs (I think) did the song. I don't know how they got the release for the TV show but not the record.
What's a nice Kid like you, doin in a place like this? I'm singing along with the Groovyest Cheshire Cat there ever was. I love this vidio I hope someday the whole movie will be uploaded so I can relive a great time in my life. I've go to split now stay cool man!
I've played this vidio several times, I sure wish that the rest of the movie could be posted, I'd love to see it again, so much talent wrapped up in one entertaining package.
my cousins had this record album, i remember listenig to it over and over again when i was very little, i also rember watching this when it reruned on tv it was such a great classic
Actually, the Cheshire Cit was acting like a beatnik. That's where the "cool" "groovy" and "You're no cat!" terms came from. That's also why he wore a beret, scarf and tiny goatee.
I thought the beatniks were out of the fifties. Maynard G Krebbs was the most famous on the telly. This was made before the hippies came into fashion though.
The Cheshire Cat looks a lot like Dizzy Gillespie from the Bebop days--the goatee, I think the headgear, and even the facial expression. Also the mood. And Sammy Davis's voice reminds me of Diz too. What a pleasure to see this on the Web!!!
I remember seeing pictures of this special in a magazine called Jack @ Jill as a kid in '79 but I never got to see it til 2 years later on a local station in Connecticut. Zsa Zsa Gabor played the queen of in this
According to Charles Strouse in his recent autobiography, "Put On A Happy Face", he got Sammy to participate in this special because he joined Davis in a 1965 "Freedom March" in Selma, Alabama, and he returned the favor.
I thought this was another copy of "Alice in Rexall land" which amuses me, but these were legit cartoon characters. Well you learn something new everyday..somewhere on Youtube is that ancient Rexall drug advert with these characters..
LOVED this as a kid in the 60s. I even had the soundtrack album! And I listened to it CONSTANTLY. This was my favorite song, especially the "potato chip/beer" line. I also remember the song "Home" (lyric: "I never thought I would miss washing all the dishes and doing my geometry. But when you're somewhere else, you get the strangest itches and home is where you want to be." And "They'll Never Split Us Apart" sung by Fred and Barney as a double-ended caterpillar. Plus: ZsaZsa Gabor as the Queen!
Wow!!! I was 5 when this aired in '66, and all these years I've remembered Alice falling through her TV set, the title of this song and the cool cat singing 'the potato chips are soggy and they've watered the beer!' What a blast from the past and a joy to see it again! Thanks for refreshing my memory with the lyrics! Hope it comes out on DVD!
When Hanna-Barbera Records put out the soundtrack album of the special, Sammy Davis Jr. was under exclusive contract to Reprise Records, so he was replaced on the album by Scatman Crothers doing the voice of the Cheshire Cat.
When it came time for Hanna-Barbera records to release the "soundtrack" version of the special, Sammy Davis Jr. could not recreate his part because of his prior contract with Reprise records. "Scatman" Crothers had to "fill in" for him....
Here's another one who saw this when a kid -- and never since. Some of the lyrics and images have stuck with me all this time -- remembered with photographic clarity. Scary. (Thanks!)
One of my fondest memories as a youth was watching this movie with my family. I've spent over 17 years looking for it and encountered several false versions of the H-B Alice (BestBuy claims to have it but sells a low quality SAP DVD of another production). Please contact me I will gladly pay you for a copy (DVD, CD, even VHS).
It's been 41 years since I've seen this...A lot of books don't even list it, and most people I've asked about "H-B Alice in Wonderland" have never heard of it...thanks!

This must have been quite a special.
ABC held onto it from 1966 through
the 80s and re-aired it from time to time.
