  • The part that really drives this video is the subtle nuance of the brilliant oboist. I think the solo is being played by Ann Knipschild -who teaches music over at Auburn. She played oboe and cor Anglais for Amy Grant and Vince Gill in two Simply Christmas tours --that's where Sasha Cohen got the record she's skating to here. But Knipshild was most likely using her normal modern oboe on this of course, and not some copy of a baroque oboe.

Notice especially how the oboist uses Tabuteau phrasing

  • not to be hatin but shes not actully dancing to the song they just took different cuts of the her dancing and put it to the song

  • @multiadamtheman no shit... RLY?

  • Operation Cutsie Fruitsie!

  • I wonder if the video poster "darkeyes 10" is still alive? All these great Sasha montages posted in 2006 and not a single new one in 5 years.

  • I play oboe and figure skate and this goes so well together. I love it! Sasha is one of my favorites because of her expression and it matches the expression of this music so well! :)

  • awesome! great editing. very moving with this music.

  • AMAZING!

  • "Gabriel's Oboe" was written by Ennio Morricone, as part of the soundtrack to the movie "The Mission." The character of Jesuit priest Fr Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) plays the oboe, which helps him connect with the indigenous Guarani whom he has been sent to work with.

  • How sweet is this?

  • how can a skater spin like that and not get dizzy? Does trainning gradually remove dizziness?

  • @megahurtz30

Yes. For spinning it takes about 3 months of consistent practice for the brain to accept spinning as a normal condition.

  • It's like she flies

  • Why do you call it "'Gabriel's Oboe' from Amy Grant's 'A Christmas to Remember'"? It should be known for it's role as the main theme of Roland Joffé's "The Mission"!

  • @TheSnoozepie ..because it IS called "Gabriel's Oboe" on the CD by Amy Grant entitled "A Christmas to Remember"---that's why. Not everyone even knows that this song came from "The Mission". Besides that, the arrangement here is not Morricone's.

  • @redbrian3655

Yes, I have understood that this is the version from her CD which is different from the original. What I had in mind was that Ennio Morricone could have had some kind of credit for writing this song. Now it seems as if Amy Grant composed it. And what do you mean by "Not everyone even knows that this song came from 'The Mission'"? That is exactly my point, everybody should know that the song was composed for "The Mission".

  • @TheSnoozepie I agree with you, but the person who uploaded this only has Grant as her source, and there IS no credit given to Morricone... sad but true. Many people, sadly, do not even know the film. Frankly, I wish more people knew that Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" is not the AFLAC commercial, and that Pachelbel's Canon is not the GE Lightbulb commercial, but that's our country for ya! Happy Easter.

  • @redbrian3655

I'm very glad to see we share opinion in this matter. I always pay attention to who composed a song, and I wouldn't have heard this song nor seen the movie if I hadn't discovered the song as "another song by the composer of the Dollar Trilogy music".

(What kind of person thinks Canon in D was written for a lighbulb commercial, anyway?)

  • @redbrian3655 I agree. My goodness, please give credit where credit is due. Morricone is a musical gift to us all! I only kow this song because I saw the Mission and it is and always will be one of my favorite movies. So gorgeous and ethereal!!

  • What a delightful, beautiful, world class talent she is. Thank you for posting this beautiufl music and video.

  • HA TAKE THAT OBOE HATERS OBOES SOUND SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY INSREMENT THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE!

  • Wow, Borat looks so different here.

  • 6 dislikes? What kind of person could dislike this?

  • Très belle version de ce morceau

    DEMAREZ CASSIGNOL

  • Ela até pode não ser a melhor, a mais, a "super medalhista de ouro", mas NINGUEM, nenhuma é "fire on ice" como ela.

  • @stevekim123 STFU.

  • haha I thought this was a video of Sasha BARON Cohen Ice dancing! How foolish of me...

  • @Mumsilius Mate, thanks for breaking the moment......:) Laugh,I nearly choked ," I is gonna do dis wicked ice dance lihke, aiyt"

  • @2manynegativewaves haha I wouldn't put it past him to do something like that=D bujakasha!

  • To be plagued by such a poor track record of jumps is an absolute cruelty when you consider everything else she has to offer. A brilliant career mired by one shortcoming. And clearly, it's not that she can't; she just has a habit of not being able to deliver on them at pivotal moments. I really do miss her...

  • I like the way she so effortlessly changes costumes, almost invisibly.

  • I like the way she so effortlessly changes costumes almost invisibly.

  • Beautiful skater!!!!!

  • If it took 7 days to create the world, it must have taken 8 to create a woman 2 seconds to create a man, sorry chaps.

  • hahahaha girly girl is so stupid gabriels oboe is actually this song is on the mission osd, after someone put letter and rename this beautyfull song haha

  • Great :) The song is actually aka Nella Fantasia

  • wonderful great

  • Awesome performance on ice! Ennio Morricne's Gabriel's Oboe brought tears to my eyes as I watched Sacha move ever so gracefully. Has she retired from skating due to injury? Anyone know why?

  • Aaaw, this song took me 8 years back in time. They played it in my grandfathers funeral, and I always think about him when I hear this song. And now when I hear it and watch Sasha skating on the ice... I just can't explain how beautiful it is...

  • beautiful :)

  • This song sounds awesome when performed on tuba.

  • it really renders very well on several instruments; I prefer euphonium though.

  • yes!

  • sasha it's just great !!!!!!!!

  • she puts so much emotion into her dancing

  • AMAZING!

Her skating is just so....clear, beautifl, and effortless...just like this music!

  • Yes, it's true. Your own expectation matters most!

  • it must be difficult to perform to this music as it over powers absolutely everything.

  • What do you mean?

  • They played this song in my grandpa's funeral, and there were red roses everywhere. Then I heard this song, I felt his presence. It was like he was still alive, even though it is so long since he died.

  • @tintina88

Yes your grandfather is with you always. when this tune plays he is with you.

  • @tintina88 Fantastic :')

  • @tintina88 well he is not dead-he just stepped out to another dimention. You can still communicate with him if you'd like and believe it strong enough. There's a nice book about it-"Matthew tell me about heaven"also available in iTunes. I liked it.

  • She is the best.... and this song is the best... but has she ever skated to this song?

  • who's her?

  • Who's her... what???

  • AMAZING

  • best song ever it rules over everything

  • Yes all composers blush with envy, and must bow in humility.

I always have goose bumps when I hear it that and "On Earth as it is in Heaven" from the same movie

  • wasn't she in "Blade's of Glory?"

  • yes she was. she had a small scene...she was the skate who caught chazz's jockstrap near the end of the movie

  • Her expression is so emotional. Sometimes it is so emotional that it really tugs on my chest just observing this type of figure skating. No wonder that sometimes, it really hard for me to focus clearly because it is absolutely knocks me flat. Also you don't need the music because the beauty of Sasha's skating is there.

  • she's pretty

  • awesome!

  • Gabriel's Oboe is actually originally from 'The Misson.' If you can, go listen to some more of Ennio Morricone's music!

  • what program is it where she's wearing the red sparkly dress?

  • spectacular, pretty, wonderful, as much delicacy made to remember Sonja the great wonderful. Sasha congratulations

  • gives me a chickenskin . . .

  • SO NICE LADYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  • beautiful lady

  • Adore Gabriels Oboe. Ennio Morricone has composed a piece of music of such sublime beauty, that it rivals anything the two towering geniuses of classical music, Mozart & Beethoven, ever did. Great video too.

  • beautiful music

  • You have good taste in music.

  • She's somewhat similar to my friend.(the face, not the skating lol)

  • Yes, she's certainly beautiful. A lovel quote and an equally lovely ending.

  • Such a beautiful woman

  • i love the little snipet of spoken quotes
