When I was a kid, seat covers for cars were a hot item. Today, they're all but gone. It's amazing how something like this ad can remind us of how we used to think about things.
that sounded like it was from the 50s
but what in what speed was that record cut? 78?

It's a 78 rpm "Audiodisc". They were aluminum cored blanks that were cut in real time. Many radio stations used them like tape carts.
