An out-of-control unregulated market for mortgage-backed securities created perverse incentives for lenders to take on inappropriate risk, then package/sell the debt to Wall Street (not to mention the utter failure of the SEC (part of Republican administration) to perform it's regulatory duties). No, the government is in debt irrespective of how the country's economy is doing. 7% of the government's debt is to the fed, and considering any interest they accrue on that goes right back to the treasury and the federal government has control over the fed, I'm not too impressed.

Unfortunately, this video is incredibly misleading. Fannie and Freddie were symptoms of the economic crisis, not the cause of the crisis. At the root of this whole thing was the unregulated trading of credit derivatives. The republican party played an instrumental role in making sure credit derivative trading remained unregulated despite democratic calls for regulation. The same logic would hold the credit rating agencies to blame for inflating freddie & fannies rating for years.

Apparently you don't understand the way the US government works. Without a filibuster proof majority nothing can be passed in the legislative branch if parties vote strictly along party lines and that was the case in 2003.

Hey get this, this is realy great a bunch of people are geting their credit card statments for Sept. with $2300.00 charges by the Obama campaign, donations that they did not make. By the time the banks straighten it all out the election will be over and the campaign out of business and the bank stuck with the loss. They do not know how many fraudulent charges there are but think it is in the thousand.
The banks and mortgage companies that originally sold the loans got rid of their risk and now had more money to make more loans with little incentive to scrutinize loan applications because after all they were going to sell it to Freddie and Fannie anyways (many of which were really sub-prime loans). Fannie and Freddy had no incentive to scrutinize loans because they are the only 2 publicly traded companies that did not have to report to the Security and Exchange Commission.
Freddie&Fannie primary function, as chartered by Congress, was to assist people that could not afford home loans to qualify. They did this by buying up mortgages from banks and mortgage companies with mainly foreign investment funds and repackaging the mortgages as collateral with other securities and selling them off to investment banks and other financial institutions (Bear Stearns, Lehman Bro. etc.) Thereby spreading bad loans throughout our financial system like a cancer.

Keep in mind, it wasn't only political pressure from democrats that incentivized the explosion in sub-prime lending. An out-of-control unregulated market for mortgage-backed securities created perverse incentives for lenders to take on inappropriate risk, then package/sell the debt to Wall Street (not to mention the utter failure of the SEC (part of Republican administration) to perform it's regulatory duties). EVERYONE is at fault in this situation. This back-and-forth blame game is pointless..

It wasn't Bush. Bush inherited the problem. The administration warned of systemic problems at Fannie/Freddie as far back as 2001.
The Republicans in the financial services committee attempted to address the problem in 2004. The Democrats had enough people to block new regulation. That's what they did. Meeks, Waters and Frank turned it into a race issue.

Republicans only wanna lower taxation, and think that's the way to deal with the crisis.
To lower the crisis people must be able to buy, and if you decrease taxes the poor will barely notice any difference as many barely pay taxes at all. The rich however will definitely notice a stronger income.
To deal with the crisis you need less poor and more middle class, which you can get by raising minimum wage, better healthcare for everybody etc.

But if you want to go there that's cool, and yeah car quality is always an issue. However Americans do still design some good cars and that isn't our major fault- it costs us $2,000 more per car in employee benefits/retirement than foreign companies (UAW and legislation that unfairly empowers them).
With $2,000 worth of more features its no wonder foreign cars seem better.

No, the government is in debt irrespective of how the country's economy is doing. 7% of the government's debt is to the fed, and considering any interest they accrue on that goes right back to the treasury and the federal government has control over the fed, I'm not too impressed.

It's not a shortage in money, really. The board of directors that manage the Fed, do so to stay in between the 2 negative danger zones: excessive inflation, and excessive deflation. When the Fed was new, they weren't so worried about the inflation part, and even structured it that way thinking they could get the stock market, and the American economy, going up and up and up in a major way, as if it didn't have to come down (housingbubbleanyone?).
Result? The bottom blew out- great depression.

Unfortunately, this video is incredibly misleading. Fannie and Freddie were symptoms of the economic crisis, not the cause of the crisis. At the root of this whole thing was the unregulated trading of credit derivatives. The republican party played an instrumental role in making sure credit derivative trading remained unregulated despite democratic calls for regulation. The same logic would hold the credit rating agencies to blame for inflating freddie & fannies rating for years.

Apparently you don't understand the way the US government works. Without a filibuster proof majority nothing can be passed in the legislative branch if parties vote strictly along party lines and that was the case in 2003.
Democrats simply refused to allow any bill to be put forward by threatening to prevent a vote and without the necessary votes to force it, there was nothing the Republicans could do even since they only had a simple majority.

The banks and mortgage companies that originally sold the loans got rid of their risk and now had more money to make more loans with little incentive to scrutinize loan applications because after all they were going to sell it to Freddie and Fannie anyways (many of which were really sub-prime loans). Fannie and Freddy had no incentive to scrutinize loans because they are the only 2 publicly traded companies that did not have to report to the Security and Exchange Commission.

Freddie&Fannie primary function, as chartered by Congress, was to assist people that could not afford home loans to qualify. They did this by buying up mortgages from banks and mortgage companies with mainly foreign investment funds and repackaging the mortgages as collateral with other securities and selling them off to investment banks and other financial institutions (Bear Stearns, Lehman Bro. etc.) Thereby spreading bad loans throughout our financial system like a cancer.
