  • cool ... what am i doing here? i cant even aford a 5d body ! . even if i sell mine :)

  • the link to go to the 5K footage bring me to someones youtube channel...

  • Whenever you get a piece of equipment that's used for film riot, you should have Gear Unboxing Mondays

  • fine on the small screen and I use 5D all the time but when shooting ads or if I want printable still it's the RED EPIC all the way.

  • red epic rolling shutter epic fail

  • @SunnyShawFilms

What are you talking about? That fact that it has one? Every digital video camera NEEDS one, or else, ya know, we would just see a white image the entire time from severe over-exposure. As it was shown, the Epic rolling shutter is far and away better than the 5D's is.

  • @lazlochatter yeah but these rolling shutters are too slow, I hate the jello-effect of these cmos sensors, trust me when it comes to capturing fast motion subject, even an old 90s ccd camera would gave better result.

  • @SunnyShawFilms

Ah, well in that case I agree with you. I use a Panasonic HMC150 with the 3CCD sensor, and I hardly ever run into instances where rolling shutter is an issue. I thought you were just saying that the Epic is crap because it employs a rolling shutter :)

  • @shapeworkstudio1 final cut pro sucks they messed it up really bad get premier or avid

  • yay! top comment!

  • CANON 5d>RED EPIC

I mean if we look at the price and what each camera has to offer.

  • @Bleacheddata

For shitty stuff like YouTube, sure. But when you're making The Hobbit, and you kind of need to capture all the extra detail, you're completely wrong. 5K, all day every day.

  • I still think this is a very Un-fair comparison considering the red series of cameras are pro theater-grade, Full-size $50,000 cameras i would take a 5D any day

  • where is the test footage?

  • Clear thing the Red is better but it's like thrice as much as the 5d :D :D

  • @SaFePointRecords uh, more like 12 times as much

  • @shapeworkstudios1 You're right :D :D

  • When you think about it in the long run, (depending on how much you plan to use the camera itself) the 5D MK11 sets a pretty good deal for indie film makers. Sure, its will probably burn a hole in your pocket the size of Texas, but the real point is that is brings down the standard pricing for a good quality image. Compared to the RED camera, it seems really cheap for such good quality, but it still worth a lot when it comes to no budget-ers. But if you love filming and making movies, save up.

  • press 4

  • your link doesnt work! its giving another channel some extra views!!

  • The red is cheap for that kind of camera!!!

  • U would like to see the Scaret vs the 5d mkii or t3i

  • @FROMMYSTREETS scarlet is that same as the epic

  • you need to actually activate these links cause it doesn't work if i try to type it in

  • Why does this video look like it was shot at 10 fps? O.o

  • Yeah, I'm probably going to but a Canon 5D markII so I can make videos for youtube, or to use it as a webcam. :p come on guys for how rich people is this video made! I think if you want to make a movie just for the web you can buy a lot cheaper camera's. Just buy a Nikon D90 and that is still expansive for just 'the web'

You know tv series are made with the canon 5D markII, a season of House is made with the MarkII!!!

  • The link for the 5K footage: bit .ly/ qjwlJd (remove the spaces)

  • Watch in 720p, it looks horrible.

    wtf

  • What I am talking about is that a movie entitled 'Captain American, 'The First Avenger' was made with the 5D and its footage seemlessly mixed with with the footage of 35mm film coverage. I wonder if it is necessary to go to the expense of C300 or red epic even for cinema productions.

  • Comment removed

  • i have seen this on leakedmovies . biz

  • I have a question here to those who know more than me: I gather that 5K is a format for digital cinema screening. Is it true that you can convert footage from the 5D into the 5K format with the Sony Vegas Pro version?

  • @microaquarius I don't know much about it, but even though you convert to 5k, there won't be 2.5x the amount of pixels. This what I think, though.

  • @microaquarius 5K is the size of the video (like 1080p). There is no way you can turn the 5D footage into 5K.

  • @Drewza3462, Yes, I understand. It's the pixel count. The 5D has a 21 MP sensor whereas the Canon C300 I think is only 8MP. How does the 4-5K resolution work? Anyway, I am amazed that you would need a mega-expensive 5K digital camera with a large super 35 sensor to produce almost the same image quality on a large screen than a rather primitive and ancient little film box. .

  • @microaquarius I have no idea what you're talking about

  • Why not upload in 1080? Like the show. Please speak faster.

  • wait, ryan, you actually bought the red epic!!??

  • @RatePage it was lent to him as a business thing.

  • Ok, maybe I am missing something, but the 5D was doing a great job. As a matter of fact I can't see the difference. Do I have problems with my eyesight?

  • @microaquarius That's because the footage was compressed twice. Once with exporting and once with uploading.

  • @KronikalProductions Ok, thanks, but wouldn't the same have applied with the 5D footage?

  • @microaquarius Yes the 5D is is actually compressed an extra time more than the Epic. But because of all the compression, the difference isn't so noticeable. It only makes a big difference when you project on a big screen.

  • @KronikalProductions Thank you again. The pixel count makes sense for big screen application. However, I still try to work out why some professional filmmakers have chosen the 5D over an actual movie camera even for cinema screening? Maybe some of the quality will have to do with the quality of the lenses as well?

  • @microaquarius I think some people use the 5D because it is small, lightweight and inexpensive if anything happens to it.

  • @KronikalProductions Well, I couldn't call a $3000.00 camera 'inexpensive', but that may be just a poor man's philosophy. I mean, to be able to afford a red epic to me is like someone discovering God on the other side of the periphery of the cosmos.

  • @microaquarius Even I couldn't call the 5D expensive but when you have a million dollar budget or more, 3000 isn't that much when compared to the Epic.

  • @KronikalProductions I agree. However, I would love to compare the movie quality from both cameras on a cinema screen.

  • @microaquarius That would be effective but the only way is to watch Act of Valor and something like The Hobbit.

  • @KronikalProductions ok, but I am still trying to figure out why many professional filmmakers actually use DSLRs? If you are talking about pixel count etc, then maybe film would be a better option. I remember I used to shoot a movie, called 'Divided Passion' with my mates at High School using 1.00cm wide small format film and, boy, the resolution at billboard size was outstanding. The camera without saying way beyond industry standard.

  • AHHHHHH! No link! I'm extremely interested in the epic footage. New link please.

  • Red epic shoots 15 times bigger frame (13 824 000 pixels) than what you can see here

    (921 600).

  • The ones that have used the epic and canon 5d would be able to tell the difference between both of them when the footage reaches for the post. In post red epic footage takes a lot of time getting it to editing table where its finally cut into short film. But there is so much of stuff you can do in post with red footage that you would be surprised. You can completely change the way it looks correct your white balance or grey balance and then change ISO to lower value or higher and so forth.

  • @ToxicMediaNYC They did that in earlier episodes. Like years earlier. They even had an interview with a professor from full sail! Besides, the visuals are what make a movie. If you don't have good visuals in a movie, might as well have been a book

  • Does someone now a good FILM camera that does 60fps at 1080p and costs below 3000 euros?

  • @HackingDutchman I'm not sure if film is measured in pixels, but you can get like a meh 35mm Film camera for around $1000-2000, and 35mm film can be stretched to anything from like 480p to 2k i believe. I would check another source if I was you though,

  • @nFnBjR Sorry, dont understand you fully, cant find the meh camera brand, or do you meaned the lens?

  • @HackingDutchman Sketchy camera brands, I'm really not an expert on this, i just did a quick search on google and a few cheap ones came up, but none from brands I recognized

  • what program or plug-in you use for slow motion effect?

  • @estudioamt ANY that you can slow footage down, but he probably used after effects. Epic shoots in 300fps so you can easily slow that down.

  • what about the script and the story. start with that! then get a camera.

  • Why is everybody saying 5d is better, THE EPIC IS WAAYYYYYYAYYYAYAYAYAYYYYYBLLSBALRGFFDCJOUCFJ BETTER!

  • Both are very good quality on youtube, though I find the red seems to have a nicer look to it, though the 5D might be more practical for online conversion.

  • Thanks for this, really interesting seeing this comparison, I've worked on both cameras before, I definitely prefer the performance of the 5d as it is much more reliable and intuitive to use.

  • dud ... in indonesia java language epic is meaning good ( bagus )

  • its really doesnt matter how it looks it is more often the look your going the dark spots in the 5D can add that extra flair if you work the camera right

  • 5D looks better and sharper, there is no contest

  • 5 d got my vote! It looks like he moved the light in one scene to give the Red a better look, But I noticed it. the chair behind the guy was not light in one scene like the red was. Hollywood paid this guy, they don't want a bunch of indie film makers to get out there and flood the world with real creativity, as it would tap into their pockets. lol

  • 5D looks a Lot better to me ! dunno why are you parsing the RED a lot ?!

  • 5D Mark II is a phenomenal camera and personally... I think it looks better on here. Just me though.

  • GUYS! Here is a working link for the 5k footage! bit(DOT)ly/qjwlJd

  • wait does he own a red or is it rented?

  • Canon employee's disliked the video!

  • adobe > final cut & vegas :D

  • @shapeworkstudios1 eh. final cut is better then premiere, but Id choose adobe for everything else.

  • @shapeworkstudios1 ehh final cut & Adobe > iMovie/Vegas/WMM/Cyberlink Etc.

  • The only thing that I see that the Red Epic has over the 5D is dynamic range and noise advantage.

  • did they shoot this with a the EPIC or a 5D.

  • @MunkeeMedia If it was a 5D would you then say it was Biased? LOL

  • you talk way too fast, i switched off, use fewer words and maybe you'll get your point over more concisely :)

  • i came here to listen to some music........ this isn't music

  • Ryan, please make another link for the 5K footage. It does not work!

  • some iditos tells " Red on big screen have a best result". Canon is the best electronic 16/35 mm electronic and with the difference of the price, RED is just a stupid toy for big production: Useless for the artist.

  • @CocktaiLMolotovX Difference of 1080p and 5K in movie theater is like comparing 240p and 1080p in you tube :)

  • @vanhakaveri maybe you're right. A simple focus error about projector and the definition between a 1980 or 5k will disappear. You can simulate to your self a giant screen by to be close a 16/9 HD screen and looking result about 1080p. I can tell you 5K is useless.

  • Don't waste your time, go directly to 03:53 .

  • I don't know why people are bringing the epic down, no youtuber buys a RED camera anyway. Put the raw footage in a theater and you will see the difference.

  • @PKnSTUFF Exactly, you'll see in on big screens.

  • 5d looks like a film, epic looks like haloy and bright, is it thousands of dollars better looking HELL NO!!

  • Ghostchaos1 the 5d has better color

  • sink? sync!

  • Like anything, you choose the right tool for the job.

Showing it on YouTube on 720p (or 1080p) - use a 5D and canon lenses. (Not least because it's easier to sink the sound) Showing it on the big screen, use RED and Zeiss lenses.

    Want slow-mo? RED

Want very low light footage without adding much light? 5D

Don't have time or inclination for lots of colour correction? Probably 5D

...or basically, for web stuff, 5D; for cinema, RED. Easy!

  • @andycollier99 Phantom Gold is for good slow-mo, not Red.

  • I think the main point to get out of this video is that the 5D looks 98% as good as the RED EPIC on 720p at 5% of the price.

  • links broken, took me to some other youtube channel

  • link to that footage doesn't work anymore.

  • This makes me love my 5D even more!

  • @smutbubble me too!!!! :)

  • Epic and 5D would be so awesome to have both of them!

  • Meh. I think ill get an FS100...

  • What's the music used during Bruno's tortures? Sounds awesome! Please reply :-)

  • The price of the RED and media cards and CPU to edit 5k is about 25 Times as expensive as 5d2. The image does NOT look 25 Times better thats fo sho! Unless you are peter jackson or james cameron dont even let the word RED enter your brain.

  • THAT WAS NOT 300 FPS! LMAO AND DEF NOT RED

  • Thanks for helping me out with my short! i wish you guys could live with me everyday.lol. but i am really gonna miss you guys, o and i already uploaded the short. check it out, and thanks again for bringing the RED! ;)

  • There is simply no camera in that pricerange that even comes close to tha 5 fucking D! It's like the 5d is saying to all other camera's: "SUCK MY LENS"

  • why no 1080 :D

  • if i had a 1$ for a every view this video got i still wont be able to afford The Red Epic!!!!!!!!!!

  • What do you use for your 300fps footage?

  • 720p and a terrible framerate...what happened to this video? =/

  • ....rolling shutter?I feel stupid but I HAD to ask. What's a rolling shutter? Brief description please :D

  • @clementeen

    wikipedia

  • If the film is good, will make it in the cinema, epic or no epic. A bigger problem to solve is a good script and execution. Very nice slo mo by the way cheers

  • NOO! THE LINK ISNT WORKING! PLEASE FIX!

  • U have a bias toward the Red

  • This guy talks so fast I'm getting a headache.

  • what's the torturing bruno song?

  • link didn't work, what am I doing wrong?

  • Why did you upload to YouTube at 720p?

  • @filmriot Youtube allows uploads with a resolution of 4K now. Use that!

  • how do u add screen bars to a movie in after effects?

  • 5D footage looks comparable if not better....5D FTW!

  • Demon Sky FTW! --- Sent From filmriot's AppRats (Facebook App)!

  • What song do they use in the Torture segment?

  • what happened to the link?

  • 5D looks better to me for somereason

  • @Ghostchaos1 may be because we own it .. well i am happy that 5D is compared with RED imagine the price... 2.5k and 55k dude. if 55K wont produce the result then ....

  • @Ghostchaos1 Yeah in the colour corrected shot of the guy lying down, I thought the epic still looked a bit milky.

  • @Ghostchaos1 yeah and the price sounds better to :P

  • @Ghostchaos1 The 5D does look better!

  • @Ghostchaos1 cuz you can afford one...

  • @Ghostchaos1 I think so to but if what pro movie makers are using the Red Epic then I might do it to. But, there are times were the 5D looks better and there are some times the Red Epic looks better. So, it all comes down to the lighting really.

  • can be seen at v i m e o 6530150

  • What lenses were on the 5D and Epic? So when you finally get to youtube the 5D and Epic look essentially identical, certainly not $55K worth of difference. More than 2-years ago we proved the same with a Red, 5D and an unhacked GH1, the web, screen size and viewing distance are the great equalizers - IMAX also looks about the same as a 5D if you were wondering. Oh BTW, a hacked GH2 can be purchased for $999 or less.

  • @HotRodCameras Internet video is super compressed, you can't really judge on youtube.

  • @ShiiComp Regardless of compression, you are underlining my point. GH2 = to Epic, 35mm film or even IMAX on the internet. You might find enlightenment by reading the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem.

  • @HotRodCameras gh2 sucksss

  • @xxbluejay21 Obviously, you're not qualified to offer an opinion. GH2 is best bang for buck available today.

  • @HotRodCameras just looked at your channel. you think you're qualified? LOLOL. GH2 SUCKS.

  • @HotRodCameras oh i'm sorry. I have nothing to say after watching that amazing movie on your channel. LUL. GH2 sucks. Fact.

  • @xxbluejay21 Failboat. GH2 pwns Canon. Truth.

  • 2:15 , whats the song name please?

  • @CraiovaStudio idk but i think its dubstep

  • Wish I had $60000 dollars to waste

  • thumbs up for the Milky!

  • 5k video on 720p on youtube haha i love it. XD

  • wheres the link????

  • when i go to the 5k footage it takes me to a youtubers channel

  • @MitchBarlett same

  • @MitchBarlett same thing happened to me also ....

  • why does the fps look so choppy?

  • @Webcast01 You mean for the 300 fps parts? Cause they play it back at less than 24 fps to make it look slower.

  • @iSOBigD no. Like the hosting segments.

  • Duplicate the layer and change to overlay and about 50% opacity

  • I kinda prefer the uncorrected footage from the epic

  • i vote they start uploading videos in 1080p

  • tim is back!

  • ryan I don't mean to be rude, but at 300 fps the slow motion is pretty choppy you probably should of used twixtor or kronos.

  • Comment removed

  • @tynaqofficial I am trting to say that the slow mo was disappointing. I thought with 300 fps you could go a lot slower and get it to be very smooth.

  • @LethargicBannanazZ Hey, sorry. I see what you mean, it's because his entire video got uploaded at like 12 fps for some reason. So every other frame is dropped. The whole video is like that, not just the slow mo. My bad, I forgot since I didn't watch it again before commenting.

  • You shouldn't have converted the EPIC footage. That takes away so much of it's advantage. EPIC R3D with REDcolor2 and Redlogfilm gamma space would have been incomparable to the 5D footage. Don't get me wrong, you guys still have the best filmmaking show on the entire Web.

  • RYAN IS A YOUTUBE AD NOT JUST A FILM RIOT AD!!! HAHA CONGRATS! the moola must be rolling in nicely.

  • I got a nerdgasm when I was color correcting the 5K footage.. It was a breeze and it looked EPIC. (Ryan has an updated link on the filmriot twitter)

  • Not even a challenge haha EPic Wins.
