First thing I would do in your case is take it back to the store, exchange it, and use the new one. Also, I've seen the guides, very easy to use, at least in my view, and I don't even like Netgear.

when you first installed the netgear router you should have printed off the
Netgear Network Summary, after you installed the device this would have had all the information that you would need just in such an event like yours.
now if you really want the S/N you should have on the desktop main screen a IE7/8 logo and underneath the words "Router Setup" click on this and you should have all the details for you router including the S/N that you need.
