that judge is a dick.. even if theyre allowed to stop you.. id hate to be stopped in the middle of a performance.. let alone in the middle of playing the final 2 minutes of a very difficult piece that i would have spent months preparing.
Well I'm not here to make insults. they never help anyone. However, I would like to know how you practice it. I have the music at home and practicing it is tiresome taking it one note at a time, especially with the Cb and Gb and other notes I'm not used to. Please help. Advice for both movements would be nice
@MrHooper411 well just play everything about 20 paces slower.. and put emphasis on the beginning of slurred groups.. and if it helps just write in that all the Cb's and Gb's are just B's and F#'s
I am disappointed by the immaturity of your comments. You strike me as whiny and unjustifiably arrogant. YouTube gives you a chance to converse with serious saxophonists across the world, but you've chosen to sling insults instead. Pending an apology I will happily share thoughts on interpretation and offer tips on cleaning up your technique. I would seriously like to know how you prepared for your performance and what makes you think you are a prodigy.
@saxinjax0730 The room was already quite behind schedule and we still had scales and sight reading to do. If the solo is over five minutes then the judge is free to stop the soloist.
Hey pretty sweet! I'm working up this solo for juries and it's interesting to hear different people interpreting this piece. I am not sure about the other people but your tone sounds fine to me, the only thing I would watch is the pitch...it's always important to play with your ears open. Really enjoyed it I am impressed!
Sorry if it was offensive in any way, but its quite the easy habit to remove and I'd rather see someone count with their foot rather than their arm... even though both aren't preferable :)
Not bad. Your tone needs a lot of work though. You are not getting to the bottom of the sound. Your tone is really thin and you are squeezing a great deal, so you're ending up really out of tune at times. You are also really late getting to a lot of your entrances, which is what gives that little "tail" on your notes sometimes. You are on the right track but I would invest in a VERY good teacher.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. My judges must have disagreed with you about tone (A+++ at District, 10/10 at State). I don't think I could have found a better teacher.
Perhaps it simply doesn't come through in the recording? Unfortunately there is no real way to argue that you are late on many of your entrances. But I reiterate that you are on the right track.
I think the tone comes through just fine in the recording. Of course, there are many different conceptions of saxophone tone. You've only posted jazz performances, so I can't tell what type of classical sound you prefer. I did not argue either way about late entrances, but because you choose to bring it up again, I will admit that I'm not sure what you're referring to. If you could refer to specific video times or measure numbers, I will assess your claims. Thank you again for commenting.
Oh, please don't judge me on what I've uploaded, that's really old stuff! Haha. I'm not even trying to say I'm better than you at all, I'm very much a student and merely commenting from the perspective of an educated listener. I'd be happy to point out late entrances (it's a concept that does need explaining, I admit) when I have some time, I think it would pay huge dividends for you if you cleaned that up a little.
LOL believe it or not it did. I got a 72, which was shockingly the 3rd highest of the day! ahaha... i wasn't really devastated. I nailed all my scales, sight reading, and i got a 22 on my solo. like WTF. hahah he was rather rude. But whatever, I exceeded my own expectations. It was just rather strange because my adjudicator at districts told me I would be an all-state contender for sure. But hey, I guess he didn't like my interpretation. It happens.... I played Brasileira from Scaramouche.
He's a tough judge. Last year I had him at district when I played the first movement of the Creston Sonata, and he wasn't very happy with my performance. At least when you're not being adjudicated, Scaramouche is a pretty fun piece to play.
I will attend Michigan State next year, but as a philosophy major. I find musical performances too stressful to want to make a career out of them. How about you? Are you going into music?
Thanks! Yes, I got one point off for intonation. How did you do? I remember they were giving you a hassle because it was so late into the judge's lunch. I hope his empty stomach did not affect your rating!

Intonality got a little less stable when you started the sixteenth notes, accompanist a little out of time at times, though it might be intended.
Maybe some more pushing and pulling dynamically through phrases?
Your articulation destroyed mine when I played it though.
The time during the A and Bb where it gets quieter and slower was very nice.
Intonality was almost consistently off on the C#'s (understandably >,>)
I could say more, but I'm nitpicky! It was great. How'd you place?
