@darkarts59 The dimensions of the Cosworth Ford DFV was more conducive for the current thinking of which powerplant was most aerodynamically efficient for the "ground effect" principle which was revolutionizing F-1 in those days, i.e; it was short. Short and compact. The Matra V-12 was too long, as were the Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, which were too wide in the bargain. Ironic then, that the flat-12 Ferrari motor powered the car which succeeded the Lotus 79 as the World Championship car in 1979.
