@novanine9 I hear the R3 is the Microkorg XL's 'big brother'. Why not go for the full radias rack and get a midi controller instead? There's a used radias on ebay now going for USD$285.

@novanine9 From what I understand, the original microkorg was based off the older ms2000s. I think the hierarchy flows - MicroKorg,MicroKorg XL, R3(based off the radias),to the full Radias. If you watch Korg USA's official vids they keep mentioning that the R3 is the microkorg xl's 'big brother', and then when you search up the r3 they say is based off the Radias system, which i think was the flagship in this line at one point. But I guess it all boils down to your workflow above other things.

@reaox - You're so right about work flow. From what i've seen, it does appear that the radias has the vocoder, as well. It might have more sound moulding features but I wonder if it has the the 3 osc at once and the ability to throw in all of those extra modulations and filters and be able to program the patch to modulate, move and morph with the 3 oscilators working in combo....ya know?

Cause if it does that and more..well!

@jaimiecurrie well i ended up buying the miniak and played on both microkorgs...I might put up a demo of me messing around with it...the miniak has better control over the sound but the microkorg XL is more practical one it runs on batteries and usb...two standard things the miniak doesnt have...but the miniak has full keys and better sound modeling...one the miniak is a synth but you would think it would have atleast some standard "no synth" sounds like a regular piano...it doesnt but korg does

@novanine9 afaik, the XL has a completely different synth engine. The original mk is based on the MS2000 engine which is good for leads and bass but due to the limited 4 voice polyphony more or less completely useless for creating pad sounds. The XL has an engine that is similar to the R3 or RADIAS.

xl gives you everything that original does and more, and 8 polyphony >> 4 polyphony... or pick up an R3. not much more expensive than xl. both same engine though.

and creating patches on xl is just a breeze

@savvides Yes, if there is Midi in/out on any keyboard anything can be played through Reason,Pro-tools,cubase,Logic,­etc.......The MicroKorg has MIDI in/out so you're good to go

The keys should be larger they are still to small and does it have memory registration and recall of all synthesizer settings for live performance you cant go looking for a sound in the middle of a live show does it have registration memory of settings? if not its lacking if it does not give any information korg website about this feature on this unit , largeer keys and add instant recall of sounds it would be better.

You should go for the XL, it has a more developed synth and vocoder. The old MicroKORG is based on the MS2000, where as this is based on the Radias. Better detail, better resolution, better effects and so on. It does fairly the same, just more polished and accomplished.

But microKORG XL has some Piano sample like Ac.Piano, Rhodes, Wulie and DX. Those're not bad but be careful, microKORG XL doesn't have Sustain pedal input ;-(
