Republicans have to do dirty tricks [to get elected] because they lose when it's a fight on the issues.
Bill Clinton commented on this during a post screening speech of the film; "The Hunting of the President". (it's on the DVD extras)
Basically he asked one of the Republicans who spoke out against him [Clinton] why it was they [Republicans] always resort to these cheap kinds of attacks & his response was that they'd lose a fight based on the issues.
The funny thing is - the Democrats actually did this in Colorado last cycle (proportional allocation of electoral votes), but because Colorado was a solid Republican state, we never heard about it from the media or this fool.
Also, as to that airlight loafers fellow at the end of the piece - the Democrats use children to shoehorn 97.3% of their legislation, so, you know, sauce for the goose and all.

If that is done in California, it has to be done to the other 49 states. Republicans are doing this because they know they can't win California period! In the future we should abolish the Electoral College process. Before we do that we have to weigh the pros and cons. Cons-less populated states ignored. Pros-the candidate with lesser popular votes can't win. The framer designed it to limit the power of the majority.

Anyway, if they want to break up the electoral, they have to do it everywhere, not just in California. That isn't what the Republicans are proposing, though.
Clean comment was just making a point: Republicans don't want dirty clean air and water like some democrats insist.
I understand what the Republicans are proposing but I went one step further by illustrating a voting process that would truely reflect America's vote. It's crazy that California provides 55 electorial votes to a candidate that only wins 51% of the vote...
Well, the Republicans I know aren't concerned about the air and water, and those I see running aren't either. I'm not a Democrat, by the way.

"Let's look at it simply. The most important difference between North Korea and Iraq is that economically, we just had no choice in Iraq. The country swims on a sea of oil."
I've already answered that question 12 hours ago: If you're equivocating, I'm not falling for it. Securing isn't stealing. We secure oil like we secure the oppressed like we secure liberty like we secure our way of life. Letting evil triumph in the region (al Qaeda/Terrorists/Iran) only allows the bad guys to control a valuable world resource (Iraqi oil).
That's funny - you say we were "securing" the OIL not stealing it, yet you claim I'm equivocating?
Project much?
Hey, by the way - how many of those "oppressed" Iraqis that you're so concerned about were killed by Bush's invasion? How many are refugees because their country is no longer safe to live in?
How many were allowed to immigrate to the US?
Who are these "bad people" that must be stopped in your mind? I'm sure they are brown and very scary to you.
Now you're just babbling. Terrorists = bad people. Collateral deaths = I dunno, less than in WWII, Vietnam, Darfur? War sucks. "Bush's invasion?" Include Congress and the coalition when you speak of ownership. Refugees = I dunno, how many? How many stayed to fight? How many were allowed to immigrate? Irrelevant. Terrorists concern me, indeed. I've seen what they're capable of. Shrugging shoulders and putting your head in the sand doesn't make them go away.
You should work on that 'reading comprehension' thing. Critical thinking is more important than sound bites. Idiots like you that want to distill life into sound bites are a waste of oxygen.
The Iraq was isn't just about securing a valuable global resource (In Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia et al). Do you think letting the Iranians take charge will jeopardize only Iraqi oil? How does it feel to be in the minority of asshats that think so simplistically they can't discern the biggest picture. Even if this war was just about oil, Why not?!! Unless you drive a bicycle, what are you putting into your Suburban?
I won't make it that simplistic. Neither should you. Read up. Take the subject seriously. Stop being a sheep. If you're going to debate the issue, know the issue.
maf54wink: No...you made my comment fit your simplistic argument then called me a liar. You're really not very good at this. You're disrespectful; you refuse to debate with opinion backed by facts and semantics are more important to you than issues. Come back with your grown up enough to debate issues. Its not your time being wasted here.
"The Iraq War is about Oil" is a liberal mantra. We did not invade for oil, we're not there to take the oil and I'm going to stop going back and forth with you on this. I'd hate to start a discussion on, "The sky is blue." Run along kid.
Actually I keep my standards of morality at a higher level than most. Most of you would rather go back to the stone age and keep within your borders. Let the rest fend for themselves, "its not my problem." No thanks! I'm satisfied with America being a shining beacon to most of the world.
Actually, its my name if you must know. Mike Bates. Trolls only make comments without substance. I debate. See the difference? There, now run along and get back under your bridge, troll.
batesm claims there are only two choices you can make - fight or lose. It's as if his manhood is threatened unless there's a missile in the air aimed at innocent people. Of course he believes there is no other option. As long as he doesn't have to be the guy we send to the battlefield. Chicken hawks are cowards at heart.
No...win or lose. We're already fighting, that's not a choice. I'm a combat veteran. Don't call me a chicken hawk. How many campaigns have you fought? What would that make you? Chicken Dove?
You are delusional if you think we can "win" in Iraq. No country is going to accept an invading force's occupation. You know little about the history of the region if you think "winning" is remotely possible. At least GHBush had the brains to stop short of invading Iraq. His son and the NeoCons, not so much.
You're a combat veteran? Of what war? The one in your head between irrationality and reason?
"No country is going to accept an invading force?" Are you 9 years old? We're not fighting Iraq! We're fighting an insurgency along side Iraqi troops! We are winning and we will win. I've fought in several conflicts. Some known, some covert. The last combat I was in was the liberation of Kuwait. By the way, we invaded Iraq then. We occupied areas in the south well after the cease fire was signed.
Oh, so you're now claiming we didn't invade Iraq in 2003 and we're not occupying their country - we just somehow dropped in to help the Iraqis fight insurgents. Wonder where those insurgents came from? Who are they fighting - perhaps it's some occupying army that you have no knowledge of. Let me enlighten you - they are fighting and killing Americans.
Julie: I...I have no argument with what you just posted. Except to say I've never claimed we didn't invade Iraq in 03 *blink* Americans are fighting and dying indeed. Those insurgents don't represent Iraq so your assertion that "no country is going to accept an invading force." should be revised. No insurgent will... There. That's better.
So you mean that an EQUAL portion of the electoral votes will go to EACH party based solely on the popular vote? Man that is horrible, that sounds like representative government, and democratic....oops sorry.
It means MORE gerrymandering! I would be Wildly in favor of doing that EVERYWHERE, but not in a Dirty Trick Partisan manner.
Honest people are not in favor of something here it helps them and opposed to the same thing where it doesn't, But that is the rule for the Gang Of Pirates
I don't speak for "neocons." I speak for myself. I will say this war is NOT about oil. Its about many things, regional stability and strategic interests are important to the planet, not just the US. If Oil were our goal, China would be our best friends, don'tcha think?
Actually what it speaks to is my point. If their supply was in jeopardy (ie US controlling), they may have pitched in to invade Iraq if oil was the goal.
maf54wink -- What..you think we are going to let China or Russia just march in there and secure that region for themselves under the guise of terrorism and self protection? Are you f$%*ing insane? Wake up ladies this is the New World Order. We are and have been for decades now a Corpofascist State.
BUSH got there first so that's OK? Killed hundreds of thousands of people in exchange for "securing" their OIL FIELDS, Killed more Americans than died in 9-11, but you don't have a problem with that?
Bush's idiotic "New World Order" increased terrorist activity in the world. Us ladies are tired of impotent men trying to prove their machismo - we're just not into you guys. So step aside, we'll clean up the mess you made.
More Americans were killed in the Pacific War (WWII) than in Pearl Harbor too. What's your point? As I said above, oil wasn't why we invaded Iraq except in the context of securing that natural resource and strategic interest. The whole world benefits from that.
If you're equivocating, I'm not falling for it. Securing isn't stealing. We secure oil like we secure the oppressed like we secure liberty like we secure our way of life. Letting evil triumph in the region (al Qaeda/Terrorists/Iran) only allows the bad guys to control a valuable world resource (Iraqi oil).
Like Rove's attempts at revisionist history, batesm's is attempting to revise and restore Bush's image. He's the worst President in recent history. Distorting history to convince others of Bush's greatness appears desperate and is simply pathetic.
Again, you're trying to think for me and put words in my mouth. I'm not a Bush advocate. I do support some of his decisions. The decision to support the war is based on my actual experience over there, my own research and my conclusions from that research. You're welcomed to disagree with those conclusions, but you don't get a free ride if you fail to support your conclusions with a modicum of fact. Fact only strengthens your argument.
You demand evidence for our points, yet justify your own as true based on nothing but your own "research".
Sorry - your research is not enough, your opinion is not fact.
You've done nothing but lie and continue a surreal assessment of the success and justification for the war. You fail to acknowledge even the basic facts in the NIE reports from our own government while claiming everyone's points are irrelevant since they specifically counter and debunk your own.
Unlike Japan, Iraq did not attack us. What's your point again?
The invasion and occupation of Iraq has proven to be an effective recruiting tool for terrorists. The middle east is less stable. No. The world does not benefit from that.
You stated the War killed more Americans than 9/11. Your point is irrelevant in context. That's my point. The Middle East is more stable than it would have been if we hadn't invaded. Tripoli has capitulated, Iran has capitulated (so far but still dangerous), Civil War has been stopped, the insurgency is on the run, al Qaeda has no support in Iraq, the British are turning over security to the Iraqis. You wouldn't know success if it slapped you.
Republicans like that eat, drink and breath slime. They have no moral compass - Tom DeLay used fake children's charities to fund his political agenda - did he have anything to do with this scam?

just win the votes in those districts, and you win the election. why should it bother the democrats how the votes are doled out if they win those districts anyways?
Democrats are fine with how the votes are doled out nationally. Why does it bother you or David Gilliard how these votes are doled out? Why are you and he so anxious to change them?
Republicans want to win more electoral votes without winning over any additional voters. This is a playground tactic of changing the rules of a game, just so you can still be the winner.
get more votes and you win. sounds fair to me. in the old system a few large cities that mightve voted democrat all the time would make every other californian's vote not count. in my mind this way is more fair to the voters. maybe its just a dirty trick, making the democrats WIN the whole state rather then just a small part of it.. yes, giving people a vote that counts is a dirty trick.
Um...you forgot that to make that system fair you would need to change it to that system in all states. Right now, just doing it in California skews it towards republicans. Sure, do it this way. In ALL states. Then I'm with you. Better yet how bout just do it by pure popular vote? There's an idea!
Republicans fought a National Popular Vote tooth and nail, because it would result in a net loss of support for their party. That's a good indication that it's not about fairness to all voters, but rigging the game for them to win.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
CBS has so much Liberal Bias (remember Dan Rather?). Why didn't people call out the Democrats with a similiar plan in 2004 for Colorado?? Why do 90% of journalists vote Democratic. More Liberal Bias
California's Republican Governor *vetoed* a bill, AB 2948, that would force the Electoral College to vote 100% for the candidate who wins the *POPULAR VOTE*.
*True Democracy is the Popular Vote*
Ironically, the only folks claiming otherwise are the Treasonous Republicans..
This is a smart initiative, many states already split electoral votes by district and I think every state should. This isn't just about the Republicans trying to gain more seats, it's a better representation of a true democracy. California was a Republican state for decades back when Reagan was president and govenor, and it's short sighted to think that California will always vote Democrat.
The only states that split their electoral votes by district are Maine and Nebraska, which have 2 and 3 congressional districts respectively. It's simply not comparable to suggest that doing this unilaterally in a state with 53 congressional districts is even close to comparable.
And what do you call Democratic Assemblymen and City Council Men in big cities denying a police presence at voting booths to prevent illegals/criminals from voting.
How does it feel to know Illegal Aliens and Convicted Criminals are just dying to vote Democrat?
How is this a dirty trick? They want to vote on changing they way they elect a president. Democrats just don't want to allow republicans to have a voice in California. That is the true story.
Why just redistrict? Why not get rid of the whole fucking mess that is the electoral college? If you value the vote of each person, elect based on the popular vote!
Fuck the electoral college. Fuck them, the PEOPLE should determine whom is President, not some group of party officials. "Party officials" even sounds like a communist state.
The electoral college still makes sense. If it was truly Popular vote then nobody would campaign outside Texas, California, Florida and New York. In that situation the Heartland vote would be of little consequence. a president elected by california and New York doesn't give a crap about the average people in the middle.
The middle is already ignored. They concentrate almost exclusively on the few states with large populations and thus lots of electoral votes such as ohio, michigan, and florida. You can even take california and N.Y. out of that equation because they almost always go for the democrats.
It's not 'what they are doing' it is 'how they are doing it' that is the dirty trick. Using the front of childrens cancer to get people to sign the petition. Typical NEOCON tactics.
It's also what they're doing. Repubs block efforts to do away with electoral college nationwide. Repubs block efforts to do the same thing in Texas, where Democratic districts would hand electoral votes to Democrats. Karl Rove is gaming the system again, trying to make sure that only Repub votes are counted.
This is rediculous reporting. I think it's a DAMN good idea for California to be split up be district. I think the same should be done for Texas, or any of the other high electoral states. This system is unfair as it stands now, and I would sign that petition in a heart-beat. . . .if I didn't live in Washington. :)
personally, I want to see the electorial college gone, How can a canidate will the majority of the votes from the people and still loose the presidency (Gore 2000) but if ALL states did this I wouldnt have a problem with it...the current system is broken, im glad they are trying something to fix it, even if IMO this is not the solution, its still better than what we have.
We are agreed that the electoral college is an anachronism, but changing it in California like this insures elections will be fixed to favor Republicans for many election cycles. Dems tried to get it done nationally, but Repubs rejected it. But go ahead, vote for this, and be a jackass puppet for Repubs.
Wake up America 51% percent of your Federal Income Tax goes to the Federal False-Flag War Tax. How many False-Flag Wars has America started? Just to provide trillions of the US Federal Reserve Bank (private corporate bank) dollars to our US Military Industrial Complex.
Why should one party win ALL of the ENTIRE electoral college votes just because they had a few more votes overall? That basically makes all of the Republican votes not count. The votes should be based on district, and everyone knows it.
2 reasons it's a dirty trick. Signature gatherers trick people into signing by hiding the title of the petition, telling signers it's for child cancer. Other reason is Dems want this in all 50 states, but Repubs block the effort, and do this in selected states to try to game elections to carve away just the number of votes it'll take them to win. Repubs block efforts to do this in Texas, for example. Last, there is no liberal media-Wake up!
How about abolish the Electoral College.

What is the name of the natural resource we are actively "securing" in Iraq?
Just the name of the resource please, batesm..
maf54wink 4 years ago
I've already answered that question 12 hours ago: If you're equivocating, I'm not falling for it. Securing isn't stealing. We secure oil like we secure the oppressed like we secure liberty like we secure our way of life. Letting evil triumph in the region (al Qaeda/Terrorists/Iran) only allows the bad guys to control a valuable world resource (Iraqi oil).
batesm 4 years ago
And stop calling me a Republican.

Yes,
I just proved that your claim that "This War isn't about OIL!"
Is a fucking lie..
The proven fact is that the Iraq War is clearly about oil..
maf54wink 4 years ago
That's funny - you say we were "securing" the OIL not stealing it, yet you claim I'm equivocating?
Project much?
Hey, by the way - how many of those "oppressed" Iraqis that you're so concerned about were killed by Bush's invasion? How many are refugees because their country is no longer safe to live in?
How many were allowed to immigrate to the US?
Who are these "bad people" that must be stopped in your mind? I'm sure they are brown and very scary to you.

Dont fall for the diversions, Julie..
batesm has come out and claimed:
"This War isn't about OIL"
Lets him stand by his own words and answer my question, as it is stated to him:
What is the name of the natural resource we are actively "securing" in Iraq?
Just the name of the resource please..
maf54wink 4 years ago

How does it feel to actively lie and get caught doing it?
You should retract your lie and get some credibility back..
maf54wink 4 years ago
The Iraq was isn't just about securing a valuable global resource (In Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia et al). Do you think letting the Iranians take charge will jeopardize only Iraqi oil? How does it feel to be in the minority of asshats that think so simplistically they can't discern the biggest picture. Even if this war was just about oil, Why not?!! Unless you drive a bicycle, what are you putting into your Suburban?
batesm 4 years ago
You should simply retract your bogus claim that "the Iraq War isnt about Oil!
Its the only honest thing to do..

batesm claims there are only two choices you can make - fight or lose. It's as if his manhood is threatened unless there's a missile in the air aimed at innocent people. Of course he believes there is no other option. As long as he doesn't have to be the guy we send to the battlefield. Chicken hawks are cowards at heart.
mailjulie 4 years ago
No...win or lose. We're already fighting, that's not a choice. I'm a combat veteran. Don't call me a chicken hawk. How many campaigns have you fought? What would that make you? Chicken Dove?
batesm 4 years ago
You are delusional if you think we can "win" in Iraq. No country is going to accept an invading force's occupation. You know little about the history of the region if you think "winning" is remotely possible. At least GHBush had the brains to stop short of invading Iraq. His son and the NeoCons, not so much.
You're a combat veteran? Of what war? The one in your head between irrationality and reason?
mailjulie 4 years ago
"No country is going to accept an invading force?" Are you 9 years old? We're not fighting Iraq! We're fighting an insurgency along side Iraqi troops! We are winning and we will win. I've fought in several conflicts. Some known, some covert. The last combat I was in was the liberation of Kuwait. By the way, we invaded Iraq then. We occupied areas in the south well after the cease fire was signed.
batesm 4 years ago
Oh, so you're now claiming we didn't invade Iraq in 2003 and we're not occupying their country - we just somehow dropped in to help the Iraqis fight insurgents. Wonder where those insurgents came from? Who are they fighting - perhaps it's some occupying army that you have no knowledge of. Let me enlighten you - they are fighting and killing Americans.
mailjulie 4 years ago
Julie: I...I have no argument with what you just posted. Except to say I've never claimed we didn't invade Iraq in 03 *blink* Americans are fighting and dying indeed. Those insurgents don't represent Iraq so your assertion that "no country is going to accept an invading force." should be revised. No insurgent will... There. That's better.
batesm 4 years ago
Over 60% of Iraqis think it's OK to shoot Americans, over 70% want us to leave...Iraqis are the insurgents.
You can deny the facts but it won't change them. We are murdering people who do not want us in their country. And we're doing it for profit.
I don't fear people of other faiths, obviously you do. Christofascists support this war. Merry Christmas - how many children did your war kill today?

BUSH got there first so that's OK? Killed hundreds of thousands of people in exchange for "securing" their OIL FIELDS, Killed more Americans than died in 9-11, but you don't have a problem with that?
Bush's idiotic "New World Order" increased terrorist activity in the world. Us ladies are tired of impotent men trying to prove their machismo - we're just not into you guys. So step aside, we'll clean up the mess you made.
mailjulie 4 years ago
More Americans were killed in the Pacific War (WWII) than in Pearl Harbor too. What's your point? As I said above, oil wasn't why we invaded Iraq except in the context of securing that natural resource and strategic interest. The whole world benefits from that.

Like Rove's attempts at revisionist history, batesm's is attempting to revise and restore Bush's image. He's the worst President in recent history. Distorting history to convince others of Bush's greatness appears desperate and is simply pathetic.
mailjulie 4 years ago
Again, you're trying to think for me and put words in my mouth. I'm not a Bush advocate. I do support some of his decisions. The decision to support the war is based on my actual experience over there, my own research and my conclusions from that research. You're welcomed to disagree with those conclusions, but you don't get a free ride if you fail to support your conclusions with a modicum of fact. Fact only strengthens your argument.
batesm 4 years ago
You demand evidence for our points, yet justify your own as true based on nothing but your own "research".
Sorry - your research is not enough, your opinion is not fact.
You've done nothing but lie and continue a surreal assessment of the success and justification for the war. You fail to acknowledge even the basic facts in the NIE reports from our own government while claiming everyone's points are irrelevant since they specifically counter and debunk your own.
mailjulie 4 years ago
Unlike Japan, Iraq did not attack us. What's your point again?
The invasion and occupation of Iraq has proven to be an effective recruiting tool for terrorists. The middle east is less stable. No. The world does not benefit from that.
mailjulie 4 years ago
You stated the War killed more Americans than 9/11. Your point is irrelevant in context. That's my point. The Middle East is more stable than it would have been if we hadn't invaded. Tripoli has capitulated, Iran has capitulated (so far but still dangerous), Civil War has been stopped, the insurgency is on the run, al Qaeda has no support in Iraq, the British are turning over security to the Iraqis. You wouldn't know success if it slapped you.

italianserge 4 years ago 5
get more votes and you win. sounds fair to me. in the old system a few large cities that mightve voted democrat all the time would make every other californian's vote not count. in my mind this way is more fair to the voters. maybe its just a dirty trick, making the democrats WIN the whole state rather then just a small part of it.. yes, giving people a vote that counts is a dirty trick.
hamrmech 4 years ago
Um...you forgot that to make that system fair you would need to change it to that system in all states. Right now, just doing it in California skews it towards republicans. Sure, do it this way. In ALL states. Then I'm with you. Better yet how bout just do it by pure popular vote? There's an idea!

Guynoire11 4 years ago

The only states that split their electoral votes by district are Maine and Nebraska, which have 2 and 3 congressional districts respectively. It's simply not comparable to suggest that doing this unilaterally in a state with 53 congressional districts is even close to comparable.

The electoral college still makes sense. If it was truly Popular vote then nobody would campaign outside Texas, California, Florida and New York. In that situation the Heartland vote would be of little consequence. a president elected by california and New York doesn't give a crap about the average people in the middle.

vonrking 4 years ago
The guy i repsonded to suggested removing the electoral college. If it were to be removed altogether the middle would be ignored.
whitakerj 4 years ago
The middle is already ignored. They concentrate almost exclusively on the few states with large populations and thus lots of electoral votes such as ohio, michigan, and florida. You can even take california and N.Y. out of that equation because they almost always go for the democrats.

eastwood13 4 years ago 6
We are agreed that the electoral college is an anachronism, but changing it in California like this insures elections will be fixed to favor Republicans for many election cycles. How is this a dirty trick?
Why should one party win ALL of the ENTIRE electoral college votes just because they had a few more votes overall? That basically makes all of the Republican votes not count. The votes should be based on district, and everyone knows it.
This is pathetic.

yermowma 4 years ago
2 reasons it's a dirty trick. Signature gatherers trick people into signing by hiding the title of the petition, telling signers it's for child cancer. Other reason is Dems want this in all 50 states, but Repubs block the effort, and do this in selected states to try to game elections to carve away just the number of votes it'll take them to win. Repubs block efforts to do this in Texas, for example. Last, there is no liberal media-Wake up!
