Love this song. I'm sympathetic to the IRA, however innocent people have been killed on both sides needlessly. From a psych. perspective, both sides are at fault, because they will perpetually be pointing the finger at each other. Many examples of this throughout history, save the location/religion/ethnicity is switched. However, what angers and baffles me is that this is between Ireland and England, and somehow the USA still gets dragged in, bashed, and blamed throughout these comments.

The way I heard it, the Irish did 'win' the war on the ground against the English. However at the final talks, the Brits threatened to attack Dublin and other Irish cities with airplanes and bombs if the Michael Collins faction didn't agree to partition. Collins, knowing the Irish were war-weary and had no planes or defense against planes, agreed. Collins was later assassinated by an IRA faction which didn't want to accept partition and wanted to continue fighting the Brits and their planes.

i first heard this song 32 years ago - with different words tho - about Bloody Sunday.
I think that i love it so much - cos you could so easily change the words a bit and apply it to any murderous organization that likes to think of itself as heroic - that confuses sentimentality and murder with making the world a better place.
When the RAF veterans are marching past the cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday - i think that a lively band of musicians ought to ask them "how you won your medals".

I am no racist either. I have some Polish friends, I know that most of black people can run much better than I ever will, not mentioning that I am Estonian myself (many of our people work in other countries). At the same time I totally agree on the the immigration statement. If we are having too many strangers in our countries our cultures will not last. If we want to keep the world as interesting as it is now we need stricter limits on immigration.

My great uncle was in the Black & Tans - fromer quarryman and sargeant in the East Lancs Fusiliers in Flanders, couldn't settle to civvy life so went to Ireland for the money and adventure. Came home and worked in a boxing booth in Blackpool for the money and fun. I bet he would have bounced your arse and the pissed up paddy in the song!
