Ah! I am reading the book now and didn't know there is a movie based after it! I'm totally gonna watch this in a few days when I finish...and so far, I really pictured Iris to be plainer...she's pretty in this movie.

i absolutely love fairy tale "retellings" after i read wicked i got hooked. gregory m is a genius. he breathes life and dimension into the simple incomplete stories we all grew up on. he gives us grown up versions to the childhood fantasies that we loved for so long. yay :)

I don't find them ugly...I think they're both pretty. The hairstyles that they chose for Ruth's character doesn't do her justice. I wish that they would have chosen a more flattering hairstyle that is of that era for her -even if she's supposed to be ugly.

I think both Ruth and Iris are not bad looking. Ruth is adorable with her smile. Iris looks a little like Drew, but not too much. Movie has a lot of actors I recognize. Wish I had read the book before watching this. Still want to read it.

It's trying to say that the stepmother wasn't really wicked and the stepsisters weren't really ugly (just because Ruth isn't blonde and wearing a pound of makeup, doesn't mean she isn't pretty). You can't judge the film if you haven't read the book!

But, since they are the antagonists, many people believe that they are, in fact, evil. The whole point of the book and the movie is to show that there is another side to the story that isn't normally told. Now, I'm not saying that the things that you have described aren't terrible, but I'm pretty sure that insane Doctors from WWII aren't usually featured in Fairy Tales...

What always upset me as a child is that the fact the 'ugly' sisters were ALWAYS the oldest and the youngest were pretty and kind! Every single story its the same.
this is supposed to be a rather well-done adaptation of the book by Gregory Maguire, who's famous for penning the book the musical Wicked is based upon. granted there were some things that couldn't be done as in the books, like how the sisters are under marrying age when they flee England, and other truly little things like that, but the pure truths of the book do make it into this.
if iris were ugly do you think you would watch it? i think not, the fact that she is not ugly draws ones attention to watch it. If she was ugly one would not stand to watch it. in life people don't like to watch ugly people.

I love how how you put a simple plain girl in the right place, and she becomes beautiful. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One person sees one thing another person sees something quite different.
Guys that's the whole point shes not ugly! It's to challenge your ideas on fairy tales! Gregory Maguire (who wrote the book) also wrote Wicked Elphaba isn't ugly the only thing that makes her different is her greenness but because we have been told different that's what we expect.

@marchingcellist I know. I own both books. I was trying to say that he writes his stories in the same way: telling the story from the POV of the "villain".

@MJMcGreg926 I read the book, and I go by it. Its the true story!!! I didn't know they made a flim into it! Read the book twice. Cinderella just got lucky.

@eibhlinn1 Well, aren't their days when you glance at yourself in the mirror and think that you look horrible? I do sometimes. She's not meant to be gorgeous 24/7. Beauty and ugliness is 50/50.

@MJMcGreg926 There is no injustice to the villains in fairy tales there are people out there that are that evil&worse.Did you know during WWII "doctors" did mind control techniques on twin babies splitting there personalities into many.The affect was several personalities that did different things when they where older.Some had 1 for child prostitution, 1 for being an assassin, &/or1 for being a spy.Did you know 1 such "dr." was brought here to the U.S. to use his evil on unsuspecting Americans?

@PaileFace Sweetie, what he's trying to say is that the "villains" described in fairy tales may not have been actually evil. But, since they are the antagonists, many people believe that they are, in fact, evil. The whole point of the book and the movie is to show that there is another side to the story that isn't normally told. Now, I'm not saying that the things that you have described aren't terrible, but I'm pretty sure that insane Doctors from WWII aren't usually featured in Fairy Tales...

@MaximilianMontesa Are you saying you find it impossible to feel empathy or kind feelings towards someone who doesn't happen to be your idea of 'attractive'? If that is the case then I feel very sorry for you! Is everyone in your life beautiful or do you just watch too many Hollywood movies?
I think movie & TV producers need to give the public more credit. We know what real people look like and we're not all as shallow as they seem to be.

she isnt supposed to be ugly. It is just taking the discription from the normal story. Basically it is supposed to be about the "ugly stepsisters" side of the story. as in she isnt ugly and she isnt mean.

What always upset me as a child is that the fact the 'ugly' sisters were ALWAYS the oldest and the youngest were pretty and kind! Every single story its the same.

this is supposed to be a rather well-done adaptation of the book by Gregory Maguire, who's famous for penning the book the musical Wicked is based upon. granted there were some things that couldn't be done as in the books, like how the sisters are under marrying age when they flee England, and other truly little things like that, but the pure truths of the book do make it into this.

if iris were ugly do you think you would watch it? i think not, the fact that she is not ugly draws ones attention to watch it. If she was ugly one would not stand to watch it. in life people don't like to watch ugly people.

I love how how you put a simple plain girl in the right place, and she becomes beautiful. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One person sees one thing another person sees something quite different.

Guys that's the whole point shes not ugly! It's to challenge your ideas on fairy tales! Gregory Maguire (who wrote the book) also wrote Wicked Elphaba isn't ugly the only thing that makes her different is her greenness but because we have been told different that's what we expect.

Stop complaining about whether the actress is ugly or not. It's not like you're paying to watch the movie nor is it your money that went into making it. Sheesh! And it's not only American movie networks who are hiring pretty actresses to grace their films... take a look at the booming Asian movie industry & everywhere else. Admittedly, I personally don't agree with the continuous marriage of beauty & movie biz but that's what makes money.
