  • cam phaser.

  • I have 07 with 162k and it makes that identical sound, I've ran full Syn since day one witmiles so don't think a different oil will make the sound go away. and like you said only makes it while idling.

  • had the same noise both Cam Phasers changed under the unplubished Recall and the noise is Gone.

  • @rudeboy5752 Do you happen to have any information on this recall? I have the same issue and want to run it by my dealer hopefully under a recall.

  • I have a 2004 Ford F-150. Mine has the same ticking that is in this video. My truck has same ticking noise from about 9,000 miles. I now have 160,000 miles and the ticking is the same. Bottom line is this from what I have found. 1) Ford knew about this issue from day one but wanted to get the truck "out" on time in 2004. 2) There is no way to correct this. 3) I know of and talked to a number of people that spent thousands of dollars chassing this and it will never get corrected. LIVE WITH IT.

  • @Txdave01 I have fixed my truck from Ticking. It has a Smooth Sound now like it should be. It was my passenger side Cam Phaser. RESEARCH YOUR RESOURCES MORE...and you too will find out how to fix yours.

  • @kertiszman

how much was it to replace the passenger side cam phaser

  • @jthompson011 About $900

  • Hey i just picked my 2001 ford lightning up from the shop. I had the same problem and followed the book like you. Mine started at 99.000. You are only gonna cover the noise if you thicken the oil. I have done it all. Y

ou need to have your #3 or #4 spark plugs checked or you can wait and the plug will blow. I got lucky mine blew in my driveway at 101.100. Goodluck!

  • @blttuf88 I had a cam Phaser problem with mine. It doesn't Tick anymore. I have put another 8,000miles on it since and it still sounds good.

  • i put 10 30w in the winter n it started to do the thinking noise i guess next oil change im goin to put 10 40w to c if it chances anything

  • i have the same issue with my 98 ford f150 it has 184k miles on i.t n it does the same noise i would like to know what is the problem some people say that if cam phaser or the oil is to think or thin i really don know what it is but hope my truck don die anytime soon

  • My Ford has done the same thing since about 20k. Bought it new as well.

  • man this sucks... im a 16 year old..just got my first truck... 05 f150 4x4 lariat with 144 thousand miles on it and watching these videos and reading crappy reviews just hurts bad man... i got the same ticking noise and im just so disappointed with ford and i hope to god this truck will work out for me....

  • I have the same issue, at the same mileage! Tried different weight oil, even syn, nothing changed. I use a guy that builds race engines to do my work and he got a friend of his from Ford to stop by and take a look. Both agreed that it was the cam phaser noise. They said it would cost around $1500 to "try" and fix it. The Ford guy said this engine was prone to this issue. They recommended driving it until I sell it or it quits; which could be another 100,000 miles!

  • My buddy had the same problem with his phasers.

  • Ticking isn't normal, depending on your salary or if you work for Ford.

  • My 2004 F150 makes that same noise and I have 189,000 miles on it and I have never had a problem and it still runs strong as ever. Every F150 I have ever heard makes that sound.

  • It sounds like a bad lifter. Synthetic blend oil is synthetic oil and regular crude oil mixed together. If the motor has overhead cams then it is not a lifter..I hope this helps...

  • go to bobistheoilguy website for info about oil they have a lot of stuff

  • check your cam

  • My 04 5.4 f-150 with 59,000 miles on it makes the same noise and It is well maintained. Jan. 15 2012 it started dying when I come to a stop but it always starts back up. Must be a common problem.

  • @supercannon2 Yes, i guess so. I take good care of my truck if fact my wife thinks i love my truck more than her...lol Anyways my truck did the same thang. It started stalling out at stop signs and i thought it was a bad fuel filter or pump going bad but NOPE...it was VCT and cam phaser. make sure you replace the ticking cam phaser bc there are 2 and the first time i took it to the shop the mechanic replaced the wrong one so i guess i got both replaced

  • i have the same truck, got the ticking fixed this past summer. (2011) had to replace my lash adjusters. they werent all making noise but replaced them all. mine as well since it was all apart.

  • How much did the repair cost mine is a 04 like yours with 54k miles just started to make noise?

  • @GEDset58 Wow that is some low miles. I had warranty pay for it, but it cost $850.00 parts and labor plus oil change.

  • Same deal with my 04. It was the CAM PHASER. Had it done in 06. Bad news is that it is doin it again this yr. I will need to check & make sure they used correct model.

  • I vote exhaust manifold leak.

  • We got these 5.4 L V8 in Australia as well. I got the same engine in my 2003 Fairlane and it makes a rattle noise when I first start it, it drives me crazy. I got the motorcraft oil filter and 5-30w Mobil 1 Full Advanced Synthetic oil but it still makes that funny rattle noise, Please if anyone knows how to fix that noise let me know. thanks guys

  • @HardcoreMetal89 I took my 05 F150 5.4L Lariat to several dealers and they never figured it out so one day i checked out the noise myself and found it was the timing chain tensioners where loosing pressure and cuasing a rattle when cold start. i replaced chain tensioners and noise is gone!!

  • @HardcoreMetal89 well first of all these engines need to be run on 5W20 only. And the cam phasers are the most common problem, they make noise all the time and often get stuck causing a very rough idle. Many dealers use 5w30 and that will screw them up even faster. They use higher weight oil to quiet them but it doesn't fix anything and they will eventually deteriorate even more.

  • How much was it to get the phaser replaced??? Mine does the same at almost 100,000. It was doing it when i bought it and hasn't gotten any worse.

  • Hey!! You have a noise in your engine.

  • Hey, that sounds a lot like an exhaust leak. Have you checked where the exhaust manifold contacts the engine block? The engine block is aluminum and the manifold is steel. This causes them to expand and contract at different rates when they heat up and cool down, then over time the bolts holding the manifold to the engine block break because of the stress caused by the different expansion rates and the bolts can rust, making them more prone to breaking.

    Hope this helps you!

  • Mine does the same thing. I just let it ride. How much did the cam phaser replacement cost?

  • I have taken my truck to a different Ford Dealership and they fixed the problem that i have been dealing with for a long time. The ticking noise was my Cam Phaser on the passenger side like i was thinking...since I have warranty coverage I called the other Ford company that i have taken it to 3 times and explained that an other Ford company was successful in fixing the issue and it only took them 2 days. So, i got my reimbursement back on all my deposits. $100 each. I was happy with that :)

  • I have the same truck, same color same model. It makes the same exact sound coming from the passanger side of the motor. The sound started at about 100,000 miles. I changed oil many times, even tried 50 weight! Other then the 3 or 4,000 miles I use Mobile 1 - 5-30W. Finally just decided to drive it until it blows up. I now have 160,000 miles. I'll just keep driving...................

  • @rokguitarstar I found that it was my Cam Phaser on the passenger side... it is nice to go threw fast food drive through s and not hear it anymore.you may want to have yours looked at.

  • i got a 99 f250 5.4l does the same lol

  • @anthonypotter64 it is your Cam Phaser...after i had mine replaced it is now "silent" :)

  • @kertiszman sweet how much did it cost?

  • @kertiszman yes it was and they replaced it...also silent :)

  • I have a 2004 Ford F-150 with a 5.4.v 8 I purchased the truck in 2005 with 9,900 miles on it. Engine started do make that same "ticking" a week after I purchased the truck. My truck now has 149,000 miles with the same "ticking" sound. The "ticking" is only when sitting at itle. I love the model of ford truck the best. I have learned to live with this "ticking" sound and after my attempts to make it go away i just one day said, oh well I have a truck that "ticks" and I live with it. Dave

  • @Txdave01 Its your Cam Phaser...just had mine replaced and it is "Silent" feels good going threw fast food drives now.

  • @kertiszman Did you go to a dealership and get it done?

How much did it end up costing you. I got an estimate of 1,400

  • @Bbloyd15 I had warranty coverage but it cost $850 parts and labor plus a oil change

  • The ticking itself is perfectly normal. But, I can't tell how loud it is, so it could be worse.

  • SPARK PLUGS! mine had the same tick and i changed my plugs. boom went away!

  • @motorider145 my '06 is in the shop right now and they are changing the plugs @ 75k miles. I thought the manual said 100k, but they say it's 60k. I'll know tomorrow for sure, but apparently the original plugs were defective.

  • My 2007 does it, but not as loud, apparently it is from the injectors and it is a flex fuel 5.4

  • Sorry about the truck man. How is it working now? thanks

  • @Rayjumpsbaby just had Cam Phaser replaced and its "Silent" now. feels good to order fast food now.LOL

  • check your egr tube from the manifold, make sure u dont have a leak

  • sounds like a lifter isn't pumping up i don't why it would'nt pump up because you're using the thinnest oil in the world

  • I hear that noise from a 2004 f-150 motor that gave me trouble basically what happened was one of the coils went bad ford failed to figure that out and the piston seized in the cylinder so I had to get the piston repaired and then changed all the spark plugs which are special plugs only use motorcraft and I changed all 8 coils. the ticking did not stop but when I service the truck with thick oil not the thin oil it requires use thick oil and the sound softens. our trucks at 220,000 no prob

  • Mine was a warped exhaust manifold on the passenger side of an 06 f150 supercrew, triton 5.4. It busted one of the mounting studs and caused an exhaust leak that was barely noticeable at idle, but very noticeable while accelerating, and remained noticeable as long as I was on the gas. It's not terribly hard to change, but you have to remove the inner fender well. And tire to get to it.

  • POST FOLLOWED BELOW: I have that same tick, sounds like it is in the middle of the truck from below, best heard from wheel wells, possibly passenger side is louder. Almost as if sound is directly behind the motor mount or more towards center of that(if that makes sense). Have you had any updates, fixes, or insights as to what it may be?

  • I have this exact same noise in my 2005 Expedition 5.4L. I had the infamous diesel ticking sound that became very audible, so I followed the TSB. I actually had the shop replace both Cam Phasers, as well as the entire lash adjusters which were also noted for updating , basically everything visible after removal of the valve cover. I believe the (2) VCT were replaced as well. This was approx 3500-4000 miles ago. I have the exact same noise to the tee!!

  • i don't know if what you have is what my truck has, but it did quiet the tick, limit it to the drivers side, and gave me better gas mileage and power. so even if it doesn't work for you it will still improve your ride.

  • Iv'e done some research, and apparently, if you use seafome in 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 parts, on about a 1/4th tank, when your gas gauge is on e, change the oil, and then use the 2 part Z-Max (Engine and oil), after you fill it up. the ticking should stop. i'm about to change mine (i use mobil 1 full synthetic high mileage) and am going to try this. and no, this does not void any warranties.

  • @jhowe67 Will you let me know if it works for you???

  • @kertiszman i just seafomed my truck today, im going to go and pick up the oil and Z-Max tomorrow about 4pm Eastern time. if i can remember i will make a video of it. and if it works/ gets quieter i will post and let you know.

  • Anyone got a fix for this yet? I have the same sound same truck roughly same miles.

  • @dvx0321 I just took My Ford back to the dealership Aug, 26. I explain that my truck ticks, no one wants to change my oil because of the noise, and that it loses power sometimes. I showed my receipts from the previous Ford Techs and what they have done so far. Hopefully something will be done this time. I will keep you posted.

  • i have the same noise on my 2005 f150 xlt 5.4 and the tech told me the noise is coming from the

    chain time

  • @jarlitos03 I was told the timing could be off...I don't know for sure but i took it back into the shop Aug 26th. I will keep you posted tho.

  • OK, here is the outcome from my failure after the ticking noise started. It was the spark plug moving, arching and distroyed the threads that hold the spark plug. It had to be bored and sleeved with a tool kit made by "TIMESERT". I would change spark plugs ASAP and inspect the threads. In my truck the the ticking went away after this repair and yes every mechanic I went to couldn't find the problem. If it wasn't for my spark plug blowing out I would still be puzzled.

  • @2DThinking Thanks for the info...I took it back to the shop AUG 26th. Glad you got yours fixed. I will keep the spark plug issue mind and ask.

  • I have a 2007 Ford F150 w/4.6L, and mine made the exact same noise at 130,000 miles. This morning that noise turned into a full blown exhaust leak on the passengers side. The time frame from when the noise started until the time of major failure was about 20K miles. I'm still waiting on the shop to call me with the actual failure. They think it is a broken spark plug, I think it is the manifold gasket, we'll see. What I can tell you is that when that ticking causes the final failure, you will l

  • Also use only the Motorcraft filter for your truck.

  • The ticking did not really go away in your video it just became more rapid thus less noticeable. Did the dealer replace the VCT Solenoids as well as the Phasers?

You may want to check the solenoid on the pass side which can be done from the outside of the vehicle without removing the valve cover.

You may also want to try a heavier weight oil like a 5-40 to help your oil pressure at idle as the 5-20 is thinner than water so to speak.

  • @PamSteed I was told once you change to a synthetic blend you can't change your oil type. I don't know for sure. I took my truck back to the Ford dealership Aug 26th. Yes last techs i took it to they changed the VCT Solenoids and both Cam Phasers. I will ask about the Oil issue tho...No one will change my oil bc of the ticking. I have to do it myself.

  • @kertiszman That is rubbish you can change weights without issue at all. If you change the oil just to at least compare it to what is happening now, I don't think you would regret it at all.

  • @kertiszman That sounds like my truck did and i tore it apart until i found it and mine was just a slight leak in the passenger side exhaust manifold. But yours does sound slightly different like u have a bad lash adjuster (lifter). But get in there and see if its something simple like a leaky exhaust manifold. Both my mustang and my F-150 had leaks. Hope it helps

  • @ChrisRymer2009 thank you...I will have a look.

  • it sounds like an exhaust leak

  • you dont need to replace anything but your oil. all car brands have this, its generally your valves, i work on 5 family vehicles from chevy, jeep, to ford, they all have it. just change your oil every 3k miles and make sure your levels are right every month. its the cheapest longest lasting thing ive done. i brought mine past 208k today and its still good.

  • @jhowe67 I do change my oil every 3,000 miles myself bc of the ticking no one will do it for me. I use what warrenty wants me to use is...Motorcraft and synthetic blend witch everyone says its the best for Ford. I think its my timing. I will find out soon i guess bc i took it back to FORD AUG 26th...we will see??

  • Well i took My truck back after the noise got louder and the Ford techs changed the Cam Phaser on the Passenger side...it still ticks but it isn't loud and you can only hear it at idol. Sometimes it doesn't tick at all when i start it up but as soon as it is warmed up its ticking again. I am not sure if the ticking can ever be fixed.

  • @kertiszman They need to replace both upper and lower ones.

  • Did you ever find out what the problem was? I have the exact same noise on my truck.

  • @salserofan No, it still ticks but runs better. The tech. just replaced my cam phaser on the passenger side. Thanks for the asking

  • @kertiszman Yeah, mine does exactly the same, they said it was the Cam Phaser. Very common for Fords and sadly not under recall. Been driving with it knocking for about 30,000Mi.

  • I have a 2004 f250 with a 2 valve 5.4 and I have done some heavy research. I think your mistake was getting one phaser done and not both. That is If I understood you right. I will say this...This phaser problem sounds just like many exhaust manifold leaks. So I would think that best way to know for sure is use a code reader and see if the phasers are popping up with any code. If not...If oil is having issues getting around as you say, try some prolong. :) See if it helps. Good luck!

  • @crackheadcheesecake Thank you, I did have both Cam Phasers changed alone with the VCT Solenoid and the timing was fixed..."so they said" I think its a timing issue and they didn't know what they where doing. Every time i called the were working on the timing and didn't sound to confident. Its back in the shop again and hopefully it will be fixed. I will keep you posted

  • There have been many folks who have had the cam phasers replaced but the noise still continues.....at least on a lot of the F150 forums. My F150 is an 05. I just tried for the first time running Motorcraft 5w-30 synthetic and it has decreased the noise a bit. Have always used a Motorcraft filter. I am going to have my dealership do a BG engine flush next and then I will replace the VCT solenoids myself.

  • @mikagsd Been told it is the upper and lower cam phasors, not just the upper ones.

  • Kertiz, I love that sound man, it sounds like a diesel, if doesn't hurt anything I would just leave it.

  • That's odd becuase you just had the passenger side phaser replaced, but yet it still sounds like a phaser. I've heard a bunch of these engines with phaser probs and they all sound identicle to yours. By the oil you say you're using obviously didn't cause this. I've heard sometimes of oil passages in the head getting blocked by sludge and causing the top side of the motor to get starved of oil, which I would think they might've saw that when you took it in though. Not sure.

  • @TheTerminator310 They replaced te driver side phaser but i was thinking maybe its the passenger one. I rescheduled to take it back in bc the ticking is louder now. I can now here it 40-50mph.

  • @kertiszman Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding. But yeah, that's probably your problem. The '04 models had a pretty big problem with this exact thing.

  • i have the same noise on my 2000 expedition did u find out whatz the problem

  • @90elpony I rescheduled to take it back in may,16th. the noise got a lot worse. I will keep you posted.
