I really had problems to work without my D50s. But as the keyboard only has 5 octaves and lousy mechanics (plastic and non-weighted keys, sound comes too late) I got the VC1 card and I hardly hear the difference to the real thing.
Anyway - the D50 is one of the very few synths that can´t be reproduce by any other synths.
To clarify 'live to tell' was produced in 1986 and D50 was released in 1987. You can imagine lot harder to do at that time using multiple synths (DX+analog synth).
@VintSynth I agree. Only the D-50 sounds like the 'real' thing. All the other D series were in name only and were no where near as enigmatic. Great Synth but I sold mine (and now miss it!) ;)
@VintSynth Exactly, the D70 is like a U20 on steroids, they even share the same patch cards. There is little resemblance to the D50. The D70 is good though, don't get me wrong, but the D50 is a classic, the D70 is just a another synth lost in time.
This is weird but some of those sounds (from the Internal bank in the video) I'm not seeing on my synth...just got a perfectly working D-50 the other night. Like I don't have the Pizzagogo under I-44 - at least that is not what it's called....I have the memory card so all the sounds I'm seeing in this video are on the card - (I have the 01 card). It's the Internal bank I'm concerned about.
How do I get that C-82 "spacey voices?" I just got a Roland D-50 and learning to use it....trying to learn to access different voices....I am stuck in the I's and cannot get out of it, lol. Lost?
@pianogrl697 - you need a memory card to access the "C"ard" bank. If you want the original presets (like Pizzagogo), you can find sysex files on the web that contain the factory banks and download them into your D-50.
@SynthaholicNH Yah I actually purchased a D-50 in Dec and figured out the whole card/internal banks - I wanna load new banks but having issues with the transfer. According a synth forum I'm a member of they said it could be my computer (Vista) since it kept crashing, blue screen, etc. so I am going to try transferring again on my Desktop soon, it has Windows 7. I was able to get the sound bank partially - but not the whole thing, it's weird. The presets were "screwed" w/by the previous owner.
I just replace the battery on my D-50 but now i have a problem with the after touch and pitch bend. Do you think replacing the volume/after touch board will take care of this problem?
If anyone is interested, I am selling my D50 for only $500 Canadian, OBO... I am second owner... very good condition... everything works great... if you are a collector or you want this amazing synth... please click on my name and you will see the video... holla back!
Great demo. Do you have any experience with having the key contacts cleaned? I have a few misbehaving keys and am not sure if I want to spend a lot to get them fixed. At the same time however, cleaning them doesn't really seem like a beginner's job. Do you have any advice? thanks.
@culturaleyes I have the same problem on mine, that's why I mostly play it via MIDI nowadays. I am planning to repair it, though. Some time ago, I did the same thing on my Juno Alpha 2. It wat the first time I ever did this job and it worked out perfectly. I think it won't be that different on the D50. I did make a manual on the repair job of the Juno, you can find it here: frankjacobs dot nl/vintsynth/roland_alpha_juno-2_repair.html
@culturaleyes I also have this problem and was able to find detailed instructions (w photos); since I can't post the url, just type these keywords in google: "repair Roland d50 key contacts" (the site is busted gear)

Hi, i live myself in the Netherlands and am interested in this Synth. I'm planning on getting the Eminent 310 in combination with this one. But do you have any tips before i go out and buy one?
Id rather have someone already familiar tell me what to look out for :)
I have the chance of getting a D110 for about 90EUR, which I believe is similar to the D50. Is this a good price? Also I'm a newbie to vintage synths but I can use VSTs easily and would love to get into the hardware side.
Great demo! I have a few 80's keyboards, (DX7II, Korg DS-8, Roland MT-32) and I am thinking about getting one of these next. Thanks for refreshing my memory on this thing
The D50 is a nice sounding keyboard and I owned on in the 90's but is it really that great? I'm not really hearing anything here that an JV1080 can't do or Korg Wavestation/M1. Slight difference in the patches and admittedly a few classics in the D50 but I really think its possibly being way overhyped. I'd take a Korg M1 over this any day.
Great video .. I just got this beautiful synth yesterday and I am so happy.. I was wondering is it possibile to load via sys-ex the content of a card overwriting the default patches, without actually having any card...?? I mean overwriting all the patches on the internal memory? thank you!
Que hermosas teclas vintage!!! Roland D50, sonidos como la intro de Bad love de "Eric Clapton" o los calliope de la peli de terror "IT" en fin unos de los mejores Syntes!
sorry for bugging but i got another question people anyone know how to take away the protection from the memory? i tried making sounds and everytime i try to save the sound it says "internal memory protected" how can i remove that?
If you haven't already been informed, press the last button on the left under the joy-stick (tune/function) this takes you to a menu where the middle option is (Protect) it defaults to ON every time you turn the D-50 on, simply press the button below (Protect On) labeled (Tone balance) and use the Decrement button or flick the joy-stick left to change Memory Protect to OFF.
First of all C mode is the card mode I is internal bank on your D-50 meaning bank 11-88 are the sounds that come with your keyboard the c mode or card more means u get to make or program your own patches and name however u want and 2 do that u need a memory card 4 the D-50 , imean I hope that helped. : )
It is the pizzicato used by Enya. When you play that sound with the actual D-50 is like listening in high definition 1000 times better than the CD.
The D-50 is the most amazing keyboard ever. I just got one and I was playing it a moment ago with the Roland JD-800 and my-God... no wonder was and still so popular, you have to get one if you call yourself a keyboard player.
Hallo Sir, can you please make a video how to create sounds, like lead sounds and how to transfer patches :) becuase got some patches from a freind of mine Thanks alot.
That depends on where you are. In the Netherlands, a good one will do around 350 euro's. But make sure the aftertouch is okay, because that's a weak point. It can be repaired though.
That is easy to repair by any electronic repair shop. Every single keyboard in the world uses regular remote controll switch, totally unexpensive. The labor is to put apart the keyboard to get to the front, that takes hours and a lot of screws but is nothing special to repair it.
@VintSynth Can you tell me what song the opening chords are from in the beginning of your video ? I know it's an 80's song, but cannot place it and it is bugging the heck out of me.
All the original sound card patches PN-D50-00 to PN-D50-04 plus many other great banks are available free from the Bobby Blues web site. I have owned 2 of these babies, the last one, I got of Ebay, it wasn't as described. It was fillfy, the seller couldn't even Bother to clean it, and, it didn't work.. I'm just about, to buy my 3rd D50, Hope this time, it works fully. can anyone tell me, where I can get cards fort this synth?. and, how many patches can be loaded in total?. thanks for an excellent Demo. Please be careful, I once bought a Roland JD 800, of the net, second hand, from ashop in readding, terrible tatty condition con
does anyone know how to reset the keyboard to its original sounds? i bought mine used and some of the original ones are not in there, i heard that a reset would bring it back. thanks
Yeah, it is a beautiful instrument. One of my favorite instrument, if not the favorite of all. I also like the DX7 and Korg M1. But the D-50 is truly special. And what a skill of Eric Persing to program all these factory sounds. Fantastic! I think he also selected the sounds for the PCM memory. But what makes the D-50 sound so unique and warm is the SAW and SQUARE synthesizer waveforms. I mean, they sound warmer then the Minimoog Voyager OS, at least to my taste.
This synth is legendary and inspires the sound-designer even today.
Sure, today exists even better tools and synths but the D-50 is the grandfather of all of them. If you ever need something like "water or breathy atmosphere" in your music...you need something like a D-50 !
Here you just listen to some nice preset sounds- but this synth can do much much more.
The D-50 ist something like "magic dust" under your fingers.
I don't get the sudden interest in the D-series synths lately. These synths were essentially paperweights just a few years ago... I know, I've owned one for about 20 years now.
They're incredibly difficult (and annoying) to program and almost none of the presets sound good anymore. These synths are only decent if you have the knowledge and will power to actually dig in and reprogram them. Once you do that, they can sound great and quite unique, but most people won't get past the presets.
I got mine from eBay 4 months ago with the PG-1000. I got the multitimbral upgrade as well that added 2 more banks. It is an amazing keyboard. I have to replace the battery now.
I just have to spend more time with it, I have 9 keyboards now, including an M1, Emax II, Ensoniq ASR 88, JD 800, Matrix-6. Each one with their amazing suprises.
This is a cool demo of the great D-50. I have a D-50 and the pg-1000 programmer. They are awesome together. My D-50 is my fav synthesizer too. I cant believe how much it can do and the synths now a days dont do near as much and they just copy the vintage synths sounds, not much programming involved. The vintage synthesizers are the way to go. I enjoy writing the patch sheets and programs too. I think that computer software stuff is great but not as good as the real thing!
No. You need to buy the V-synth and the D-50 Card which is a PCMCIA Card that slides in the top of V-synth. Best thing is just get yourself a used D-50 Keyboard and also buy 5 empty voice crystal cards and all you can do is you can transfer all the data using Sysex Data dump. That is done with a computer and your D-50 Keyboard and MIDI In/Out cable.
I would just get the rack version. it can be found cheap on ebay and its the best synth I have. you can also hook it up to pc and find tons of awesome patches online to transfer. the instruments sound real as they are, but even after mixing and processing the sound further (mixing and mastering), you will never be able to tell its a emulation in the final mix.
I own a D-50 (and yes, it's awesome, best $200 I ever spent) but my presets are slightly different than yours; example: 'Cathedral organ' is I35, not I38, and 'rock organ' doesn't seem to exist. I guess they varied the presets a bit from time to time? There's a great choral patch on mine called 'Nuns', C86, which is my favorite.
You can do a System Restore using the Data Card if you have it. Or if not you can do a Sysex data dump using a computer and the software using MIDI in/out cables.
I remember checking out the presets when I was going to buy my D50, everything was cool but you should have seen my face when I hit the cathedral organ. Immediately I told the seller "take that fucking money!" and I got away running with my D50 under my arm before anyone saw it. Best in the industry past or present.
Absolutly. I have made pipe organ patches on the d50 that sounds even better then this one. So this is truely a synth you can make very very good patches on. I have made several patches that matches real organs. Everything from small church organs to massive cathedral monsters. So this proves that even a dumb newbie like me can create awesome patches with this machine.
Even though I now own a JD800,(Which i like a bit more) the D50 has a magical quality to it,looking back in retrospect selling my first D50 was a big mistake, for 1 it was in near mint condition(second one i owned was a fixer upper i found and sold)I don't really collect gear whatever i have i use, and the D50 can always find it's way into all styles of music,New Age,Progessive,Rock, ambiant, jazz.

There are various card. I have PN-D50-00, PN-D50-01 and PN-D50-02. Spacey Voices is in PN-D50-01.
Look around on the internet, that's where I found mine. Actually, PN-D50-00 is a copy of the preset voices in I-bank, so that's only use as a backup.

does anyone know how to reset the keyboard to its original sounds? i bought mine used and some of the original ones are not in there, i heard that a reset would bring it back.

Intruder FX started Prince's Alphabet St. "This Is Not Music, This is A Trip" 12" single version. Dr. Fink along with Prince used this keyboard.
I cant wait to setup mine. Cool presentation.

is the D-50 semi-weighted?
loginberry666 2 years ago
No.. Even though there is metal blocks glued under the keys to make it easy, and sensitive to touch.
JazzMusic79 2 years ago

D-50 lives forever!

I remember this synth at school, is there a demo on it called Central Park ?
MrRedPolo 3 years ago
you didnt answer my question¡¡is there a pc version ?
1962087 3 years ago
JazzMusic79 3 years ago
Never heart of one. I think the D50 may stille be a bit too young for that, it will have to become more vintage first.
VintSynth 3 years ago
I presume they're outboard effects?

does anyone know if theres such thing as a virtual d50 for the pc ?
1962087 3 years ago
maybe, but it wont beat the hardware
fdambra 3 years ago
I would just get the rack version. it can be found cheap on ebay and its the best synth I have. you can also hook it up to pc and find tons of awesome patches online to transfer. the instruments sound real as they are, but even after mixing and processing the sound further (mixing and mastering), you will never be able to tell its a emulation in the final mix.

The preset is I-44 Pizzagogo. It sounds like Violin Pizzicato style of playing.
JazzMusic79 3 years ago
I own a D-50 (and yes, it's awesome, best $200 I ever spent) but my presets are slightly different than yours; example: 'Cathedral organ' is I35, not I38, and 'rock organ' doesn't seem to exist. I guess they varied the presets a bit from time to time? There's a great choral patch on mine called 'Nuns', C86, which is my favorite.
neverfakethefunk 3 years ago
You can do a System Restore using the Data Card if you have it. Or if not you can do a Sysex data dump using a computer and the software using MIDI in/out cables.
JazzMusic79 3 years ago
I remember checking out the presets when I was going to buy my D50, everything was cool but you should have seen my face when I hit the cathedral organ. Immediately I told the seller "take that fucking money!" and I got away running with my D50 under my arm before anyone saw it. Best in the industry past or present.
ElPopularVale 3 years ago 2
What song do you play with the cathedral organ?
Mikkysixx 3 years ago
Nothing in particular. I just grabbed some chords.
VintSynth 3 years ago
Couse i really like it.
Mikkysixx 3 years ago
Cathedral organ in the d50 is one of the best I've ever heard in the industry
ElPopularVale 3 years ago
Mikkysixx 3 years ago
Do all the sounds you're playing come built in or are they patches?
King2812 3 years ago
Man, that is still amazingly powerfull machine, and you did really nice job here! Respect
