The decision was a disgrace. Absolutely disgusting. Burton was defensively superior and far more accurate. I can't see giving Ward more than 3 rounds, at best.
wait wait wait do you hear THE SCORE FORM THE JUDGES? I MEAN IF HE LOST BY 2 OR THREE POINTS I WOULD BE MAD BUT 98 - 90? 96 94? 96 91? COME ON SPOT THE ODD ONE OUT
Judge Nolan, has it 98/90,get the fuck outta here. Can anyone here say Mickey won that fight by 9 rounds?Don't know what the fuck he was watchin, but it wasn't this fight.
WTF the judges are stupid non of them gave it to Burton at all? He controlled the whole fight til the 9th round and he out landed him.... smh that's why this sport is dying now
that is a disgrace to this great fight!! Two warriors out there, taking it all out of each other, so obviously a close fight and one guy gives it to micky by 8!? disgrace to micky ward even!! saying it was an easy fight for him. He had to give his guts out for that win. I would give to ward 95-94 personally, for the bigger, hurtful shots and the knockdown but boy did berton tag off on him at times. Similar to ward v gatti I but ward was not as good in this one.
@TrentSteeele yup..i mean look at the numbers, Burton had him on power punches, punch percentages, over punches landed...he overall got in that all, his only sloppy round was the 9th, but not enough to say he lost...great fight none the less thou :-) both came out HARD! much respect to both fighters
Even with the knockdown I thought Augustus won this A LOT of head, elbow and low blows by Ward too. Not to mention rabbit punches and hitting Augustus when he was down. A draw at best for Ward in my opinion. Augustus ? Stiffed yet again here.
i can still remember watching this fight live on espn friday night. I had burton winning till the knock down and then gave it to ward by a point. Hats off to both fighters though!
@bench175 depends on the fight. MMA and boxing are both great sports. Ive seen VERY boring MMA matches, and VERY boring boxing matches. If you say this match is boring, your nuts. YOu try going in the ring, and see how "easy" it is.
@bench175 Boring? why because they are still standing after a flush shot? Because they dont spend all their time grappling? Don't get me wrong, UFC fighters are very skilled and versatile, and I admire them for that a lot, but they arent as tough or gritty as most boxers. But this was beautiful, skilled, and non-stop for 10 rounds, both guys tough as nails refusing to yield.
great fight, the problem with burton was also what made him successful he was akward. being that way made him able to pose problems with better technical fighters because he was unpredictable. but in the same token it made it hard for him to finish fights because he was allways off balance. he lost alot of his fights because he was a road warrior, he went to your house to try to beat you. with alot of fights happening close to the hometowns of fighters he came out on the short end of the stick
I remember how awesome this fight was when it aired. I thought Burton won then and it's even clearer now. But it was such an awesome fight that it doesn't matter. btw, Teddy Atlas is the best color man in the business.
it was a great fight but micky honestly deserved the win. i think burton is excellent one of my favorite fighters but i find it strange that he has a tendency not to go for the K.O. no matter who he is fighting.
Remain for ever in my heart the image of Frank Cappuccino (the referee) when at end of the match hugs and kisses the two boxers: unforgettable as this incredible match.
Teddy and Bob, called it right, two blind mice judges. I mean 98-90 are you kidding me? I would have called it a draw too. There was a conspiracy on Burton's whole career, it was sad to see from someone who enjoyed boxing so much.
DAMN! Without question, this is one of the most phenomenal endings to a boxing match I have ever seen.......2 absolute WARRIORS, toe to toe, to the very end! Obviously, one would have had to watch the fight in it's entirety to properly evaluate who actually won the match. The mere fact that the fight was held in a New England state, (Ward's backyard), may or may not have influenced the official scoring. From a pure competitive standpoint, it's difficult to top this display. BOXING & HEART!
that incredible body shot made it a 10-8 round, had to, in favor Ward, surprised there's no serious cuts with all the head shots. I have remembered this fight as one of the best I've ever seen, sitting in living room that summer, living 50 miles away from where the fight was happening, always went to the beach at Hampton and Casino for Arcade/Concerts, this fight made this place immortal!
Burton didnt get robbed. It clearly looked like he was about to collapse onto the canvas. Probably meaning that even though Ward landed less, he definetly landed his harder. Ward looked like he could go a couple more rounds as for Burton..he was done.
@jmcossio87 a fight isn't judged on how a fighter LOOKS after a fight....???
using your logic, go look up the 12th round of Augustus v Ngoudjo, and tell me why Augustus lost that one... seriously do it. come back with your answer
ARE YOU KIDDING ME !?!?!?!? Just because of that one down and the amount of punches thrown ? How the hell are these judges scoring these fights ??? I mean even the compubox numbers totally contradict the judges decisions. Hell even the announcer's scorecard made more sense than the end result.
@unthinkative even if burton landed 300 more punches he still would've won the fight because burton'd punches didn't do as much damage as the two well placed punches from ward. think of it like this, if burton was facing an 8 foot tall monster and lands 300 more punches than him, but the punches really have no effect, than the big guy lands 2 well placed body shots and have burton down on a knee, the big guy wins,
@vwazp again.. you don't know what you're talking about....
if the guy doesn't stay down from the knockdown, how is it an automatic loss????? sure, the "big guy" wins the round, but the 300 punches he landed before that would have won every other round on the scorecard... stupid example!
@mrgor24 i understand your point, we just look at things differently. that's why there are very controversial decisions in boxing. judges use there own philosophy to judge.
you go by number of punches land thus win the round.
while i go by the amount of real damage/hurt done overall in the whole fight.
Ok im gonna say something someone said about the Martinez William fight. If you think a fight could easily be a draw or a super close fight, its possible the decision could also be pretty wide too. If a fighter wins one close round, is it necessary/required he lose the next close one? If a judge feels a fighter wins each close round for a specific reason in his mind (punches thrown, position, power, landed, etc) he may give him all the close ones. 98-90 is extreme, but not impossible
I had this 96-93 to Burton. Ward winning round 1,2 with 10-9 and round 9 10-8. The rest I scored 10-9 for Burton and copybox is on my side. 421 punches to 320. I have a good eye.
96-91 Ward : It means at least 3 10-8 rounds for Ward ????
98-90 Ward : Totally corrupted beyond belief! It would mean that Burton-Augustus has won only 2 rounds and had 2 10-8 rounds? Fire this guy please! I had it 97-94 Ward.
ward fought his heart out augustas much better tho. Where was the ref. Ward got the gift to fight his fight, and augustas beat two people that night. ward and the ref.
@aybaby1024 How was he fighting the ref? The ref stayed out of the fight...there were no clinches, there were no questionable knockdowns. If Augustus was more conditioned for the fight (he took it on 2 weeks notice) he may have won.
ward fought his heart out? augustas much better tho. Where was the ref. Ward got the gift to fight his fight, and augustas beat two people that night. ward and the ref.
MMA fighters may be tough, but I can't see any of them that could sustain that long of punishment and dish it equally out at the same time. Skill, heart, balls, conditioning.
Hellified fight... I saw the Mayweather-Augustus fight and man, it was a bitch... Floyd couldn't hurt him and he was hitting him with EVERYTHING... But even more than that, Augustus was coming back after everything and wacking Floyd... This was my first time seeing this fight but it won't be my last... He should've fought a undefeated Ricky Hatton... That shit woulda been beautiful!!
the referee in this fiasco of a fight needs HIS ass whooped- the leading with the head- throwing his shoulders-using his head as a battering ram by ward thruout this fight was in despicable. - the ref breaking the fighter and leaving burton in pinned in the corner to resume fighting instead of starting them in the middle if the ring- piss poor reffing...there's a special place in hell for bad refs-its called las vegas.
i don't know all the rules to boxing, but if Ward wasn't doing anything wrong by what you just said, it sure as hell didn't help him that much really. Burton/Augustus still was able to slip and block 77% of Ward's punches and landed 100 more than Ward despite throwing a lot less.
obviously too many people (including the judges) got sucked in to thinking Ward is winning when they saw Burton against the ropes.
question: HOW THE FUCK IS BURTON 38-31?!?!? shit, i know he's always used as a journeyman contender... but surely it's not possible to get THAT many bad decisions...
i tell u something.-both floyd mayweather jr. and his trainer uncle roger said that to this day, floyd s fight with augustus was his HARDEST fight. he bloodied floyd s nose and landed good punches. he WAS robbed in most of the fights that he lost
@ibhof2 Hear ya there! The man always had balls of steel, took fights in every fighters hometown on short notice. If he had just a smidge more iron in those fists and took his career a tad more serious I think he would have been a world champ a few times over. Few ppl know what you said there. Mayweather to this day says Augustus was his hardest fight ever. That says everything one really needs to know.
yep, it's possible. he's usually fighting in the backyard of his opponent on late notice, making the crowd/judges against him automatically, and cos he's not a power puncher he doesn't get the ko's that take the judges out of the equation.
someone should go through and work out his REAL record, exchanging the robbed losses/draws with wins (for example, go watch his fight vs Soren Sondergaard, it was called a draw). no doubt his wins would be in the high 40s or even 50s
@chestermolester33 burton was often thrown in at the last minute against some wicked fighters such as mayweather, a streaking antonio diaz, leonard dorin just to name a few. Burton has been screwed in at least 10 fights, the prime ones being courtney burton and frankie figueroa, but often he would JUST lose against top guys by the skin of his teeth. Imagine if he had time to prepare a little more for his fights? His record should read something like 55-16. Thats perhaps a little more indicative.
@chestermolester33 i agree with U, but unfortunately it IS possible...i'd say almost certain. one judge actually had it 98-90!! i don't think we'd have 2 look much further for proof!
On that day under Mickey's gloves we hung in there to win from an almost impossible beating from a fighting genius named Emanuel Burton with a left hook to the body like the Paddy's we are.
i woulda called it a draw, both guys gave it their all. if burton/augustus didnt go down in that 9th round then he should won, but a draw woulda been the perfect result. no doubt the home crowd of ward influenced the decision.
@mrgor24 ridiculous, the knockdown clearly gave the fight to ward, no question. I had burton ahead slightly before that. the score should be about how much a fighter is hurt.
the score of the ROUND is affected by how a fighter is hurt, which is why knockdowns make it 10-8 instead of 10-9. i'm not sure what point you're really trying to make... tbh i don't think you know what you're talking about
@derekjtg my point was there were no knockdowns in the first round but the two judges had it 10-8 & 10-7. dw not mad or anything just tryin to get it straight
@mrgor24 Enough with the lovey dovey gave it their all nonsense. This is boxing. There is only one winner. There's no such thing as an even fight, even if it's the difference of one punch. By your standard, the whole sport element of boxing would be non existent if matches were called like that.
@WallStwizkid wrote that a long time ago. for what it's worth, enough other people agreed with my comment so why don't you harass them too. also, there are still draws in boxing you knob jockey.
@ibhof2 I think Ward's combination punching was more precise and he tended to have a greater volume of punches landed when he was going for combinations. Ward controlled much of the pace in the fight...there's something to be said for ring generalship. And c'mon...the knockdown.
LULZ @ Ward was more precise. Burton - 46%, Ward - 27%
ring generalship? how about defence, effective aggression and clean punching - you know, those other things a round is judged on? Burton controlled all of those categories in AT LEAST 6 rounds
OMG WHAT A FIGHT!

yep, it's possible. he's usually fighting in the backyard of his opponent on late notice, making the crowd/judges against him automatically, and cos he's not a power puncher he doesn't get the ko's that take the judges out of the equation.
someone should go through and work out his REAL record, exchanging the robbed losses/draws with wins (for example, go watch his fight vs Soren Sondergaard, it was called a draw). no doubt his wins would be in the high 40s or even 50s

@chestermolester33
not only that but my man took fights on short notice. he's often a replacement fighter. YA couldve had one of the cleanest records in boxing history.
BLaCkKsHeEp 1 year ago

@chestermolester33 i agree with U, but unfortunately it IS possible...i'd say almost certain. one judge actually had it 98-90!! i don't think we'd have 2 look much further for proof!

Cant believe he got back up and managed to finish the round and continue to the last one

the worst piece of judging ever, never mind malignaggi-diaz or williams-martinez.... 98-90!?
fBOli 2 years ago 2
@fBOli FUCK YOU! THE IRISH WON!
On that day under Mickey's gloves we hung in there to win from an almost impossible beating from a fighting genius named Emanuel Burton with a left hook to the body like the Paddy's we are.
HulkSmashPunyHumans 2 years ago
i didn't say Micky didn't win, just that it was a fucking ridiculous piece of judging to call a fight like that 98-90. idiot

i felt augustus got robbed. ward threw more punches, but augustus clearly LANDED more punches. despite the knockdown, augustus still won imo
ibhof2 2 years ago
i woulda called it a draw, both guys gave it their all. if burton/augustus didnt go down in that 9th round then he should won, but a draw woulda been the perfect result. no doubt the home crowd of ward influenced the decision.
mrgor24 2 years ago 15
@mrgor24 ridiculous, the knockdown clearly gave the fight to ward, no question. I had burton ahead slightly before that. the score should be about how much a fighter is hurt.
vwazp 1 year ago
@vwazp
the score of the ROUND is affected by how a fighter is hurt, which is why knockdowns make it 10-8 instead of 10-9. i'm not sure what point you're really trying to make... tbh i don't think you know what you're talking about
mrgor24 1 year ago
@mrgor24 ward scored a knockdown though...
derekjtg 7 months ago
@derekjtg... in the FIRST round. repeat: FIRST
mrgor24 7 months ago
@mrgor24 but if he would've scored two knockdowns in the first round it would have been over like mancini vs. frias
derekjtg 7 months ago
@derekjtg .......... dunno what you're talking about. didn't relate to anything i just said
mrgor24 7 months ago
@mrgor24 how did it not?! whatever, im done.
derekjtg 7 months ago
@derekjtg my point was there were no knockdowns in the first round but the two judges had it 10-8 & 10-7. dw not mad or anything just tryin to get it straight
mrgor24 7 months ago
@mrgor24 I am the biggest micky ward fan I had him up by a point the sad thing is the gap ward had won by.
magellanphone 6 months ago
@mrgor24 Enough with the lovey dovey gave it their all nonsense. This is boxing. There is only one winner. There's no such thing as an even fight, even if it's the difference of one punch. By your standard, the whole sport element of boxing would be non existent if matches were called like that.
WallStwizkid 5 months ago
@WallStwizkid wrote that a long time ago. for what it's worth, enough other people agreed with my comment so why don't you harass them too. also, there are still draws in boxing you knob jockey.
mrgor24 5 months ago
@ibhof2 I think Ward's combination punching was more precise and he tended to have a greater volume of punches landed when he was going for combinations. Ward controlled much of the pace in the fight...there's something to be said for ring generalship. And c'mon...the knockdown.
pdecarlo 1 year ago
@pdecarlo
LULZ @ Ward was more precise. Burton - 46%, Ward - 27%
ring generalship? how about defence, effective aggression and clean punching - you know, those other things a round is judged on? Burton controlled all of those categories in AT LEAST 6 rounds
mrgor24 1 year ago
aye ya are right. I am the idiot here. my bad.
98-90 is a fucking joke.
That was called fucking boxing if I have ever seen it. Now that was struggle.
That fell off the rails of the choo-choo train and was/is a testament into how you don't give up EVER no matter what.
