either ha had a second kit of lego, or the lego education resource set to do it, but yes he did use only 3 motors and 1 brick. but there are extra peices the blck things that are round and connect peg to peg he had extras, lego set only brings u 2 he has 4

I am quite sure i only used *my* single LEGO Mindstorms retail set, but i noticed that every pack may or may not have extra parts...

Checked this yesterday: it turns out that both the booklet and the box of my NXT set depict four (4) of the pieces you describe.

Is there any other part i used that you think is missing in a NXT set? Else i'll have to conclude again it can be done from a single Mindstorms NXT retail set....

What Firmware did you use for the Java?

just the LEGO firmware, the JAVA application is only on the PC, relying on others' peoples work reused from their libraries.

my mouse, essentially.

wrote a Java program that converts mouse movements to BlueTooth messages send to the NXT for controlling the motors.

Cannot easily share the program, sorry for that.

You can find instructions how to build this model from the LEGO NXT set at photobucket look for albums/x249/NXTLiftBoy/

Mind you that you should start with picture 001 and proceed until 250: the album is somehow reverted.
