its not gettin enough fuel, its too lean at idle. Have a look at the throttle linkage, it should keep opening and shutting at idle, should only do it when its under load
Same model, same problem backfiring only worse at high RPMs. tried everything then noticed while adjusting valves, one exhaust valve not moving. Pushrod fine. that means CAMSHAFT. other forums point to this model with bad camshaft. Tore engine down to the cam - BINGO. One lobe way worn down. Total cost to fix $100 in parts. Bit of work - remove engine, tear it down.

So when you throttle it up does it give you a good amount of performance or does it bog?...if so you have a problem with your points + condensers and possibly only one thing wrong somewhere in your entire ignition system, check these if it has them: Points, Condensers, Magnetos, Timing, ignition cables, and last but not least spark plugs, you should be able to fix it with checking with those! and that looks like a 2 stroke so..point .020 should be your points spacing
My engine, same exact model, is now giving me the same problem. Barely idles, and always needs choke unless its at or near full speed. Ran fine a year ago. I'm getting another carb and hoping to get it fixed. I already adjusted the valves and my carb is totally clean.
@Spartan117JMC No, this is a vertical shaft engine, this is the way it sits. Not a whole lot of tractors today have engiens that are upright, in fact back in the 60's the cylinder was upside down!
This problem was fixed with a new carb. I have been thru the old carb several times and It is spotless . To this day i can't figure out what is wrong with that old carb. It is really odd the way the motor runs with that old carb. That carb had 176 hours on it and was used regularly.

how much did the new carb cost, i think i may need a new one for mine

Vacuum leaks are common with these carbs. The old opposed twin setups were much better.

It's a 21hp Intek V-twin. It's definitely not 2-stroke. Besides, it's almost impossible to find a 2-stroke in this configuration.

@richmistar250 i have the same exact engine, they are not 2 stroke

UNLESS ur engine is uilt to run sidweays that is
Spartan117JMC 1 year ago
you MUST NOT run an engine sideways
as fuel in the carb gows wherw its sup to bu gravity AND the oil in the engine will stay in the bottom of the engine and make it flow some worse
in other words... engines HATE running other than straight uo and down

maybe lifter or valve spring...
douger0500 2 years ago
Valve adjustment done 3 times. I am sure i got it right. Lapped valves also .
madcat737 2 years ago
So how does it do with some choke at idle? Possibly an idle circuit restriction?
suchfunstuff 2 years ago
Valve adjustment needed, asuming the carb is clean.
