Many of the songs on Life in Slow Motion were written from the perspective of characters rather than from David's own. This song was actually written for the film 'A Way of Life' and basically tells the feelings of the central character, Leigh-Anne, a disenchanted teenage single mother! Hence the 'tomorrow girl I'll buy you chips' line, which is the mother talking to her sick 'coughing under a windowpane' daughter.. It actually makes the songwriting all the more impressive, in my opinion. :)
I`m from the same town as David, Sale in Manchester. when I was a kid David would play his music in the streets and it was beautiful, how lucky I am and just to think L.S. Lowry is from the same city. some people are meant to do things and David found his.
@videoanator , Not sure when feeling and artistic expression of music became diagnostic of Tourette's syndrome? The chance of that is definitely much lower than the certainty of your inability to spell.....
One of the very few artists who are better live! Great song that has been missed by most here in the USA. One day they will wake up and realize this is one of the best talents to come along in the last twenty years.

This song makes me feel so many different emotions. It's beautiful and it is pure poetry. I'm so glad David Gray provides me with an alternative to the rubbish on T.V/Radio.
WIth everything seeming so whacky and crazy in the world - we're all wanting to just be entertained and forget about it for a while ... David - Thank You for that because all I need is your music sometimes! Thank you - Thank you!
What an amazing song. My favourite from the entire album ...and it's tough to choose a favourite David Gray song!
I have had the privilege of seeing him four times (and counting). The most memorable show was his last stop of Life in Slow Motion tour at Deer Lake Park in August 2006. A warm Vancouver summer's day, with the trees and lake as a backdrop, fading into a crisp, clear, starry summer's night. Amazing.
For me he is saying that there is no God and no love, but it implies that there is something. Aint no love that's guiding me - but something is guiding me.
@raymond052367 I saw David Gray in concert recently. When introducing this song, he said he wrote it for the movie The Hitcher but it was not included in the movie. The song is from the point of view of a character in the movie.
I just bought his Life In Slow Motion cd and listened to this song, and I immediately fell in love with it. Completely underrated and absolutely amazing song :)
At last an opportunity to see David Gray perform this Masterpiece.I saw it on the Jules Holland show in the uk back in 2006 bur didn't get the time to record it.Thanks for this 5*+++
As bootyjuice27 said, Clune was an amazing drummer and the chemistry between dave and clune was brilliant on stage. As far as the new drummer being better, now way.
The broadcast shows i.e. tv were always tamed down but clune live was fantastic to watch we went to see clune play his part just as much as dave.
It's a shame they split and I feel that clune was a little hard done by, but then who knows why, what, when about it other than them two.
I absolutely agree with you there. Clune was great and in Davids interviews theres sometimes a sort of way he talks about clune which lets you know they had a close friendship, this shows especially in the "this years love" interview that u can find on his youtubepage. Im not sure why they arent together anymore, its a shame, keith prior is not bad, but clune was better!
Just seen him at folkestone and he's great. as for the slated bit - i think that people see the sort of person who brought White ladder as dinner party music as being his audience. Damned because a million housewives saw it advertised and liked some of the tunes. Like whatever you want
He's not always the most "hip" name to drop, but there is no doubt that David Gray is a great songwriter when he's on form. This track grabbed me as soon as I heard it - the phrasing on the verses is reminiscent of Dylan I think. Found it by accident though when I was actually looking for Whitesnake's "Aint No Love In The Heart Of The City"... Aye, that'll be fucking right!!! :o)
that's the clune, mate.....known for his shirts and his amazing skills on the drums. david did some amazing work with clune but decided they lost their "creative touch" together so he shit canned him and moved on....personally think clune is amazing but whatever
beautifully depressing

Maybe that it would do me good
If I believed there were a god
Cut in the starry firmament
But as it is that's just a lie
And I'm here eating up the boredom
On an island of cement
Give me your ecstasy I'll feel it
Open window and I'll steal it
Baby like it's heaven sent

A moving song. A question though, is David saying there is no God or is he referring to someone that thinks that there is no God?
raymond052367 2 years ago
@raymond052367 I think David is referring to someone who doesn't believe that there is a God; He's telling a story as if he was that person.

Reminds me of someone else, but not sure who.
