I think Clay was brave to attempt a version of one of the most perfect songs ever written. Don McLean is an amazing talent. I give Clay credit for putting his own interpretation into this song. It's not in the same caliber as the original, but a respectable cover which shows respect for a truly great artist.
Yes, let's see how well the haters do in a LIVE TV competition when the idiot producer tells you just before you're supposed to go on that he's adding 60 seconds to the song & tells you to wing it without rehearsal. Clay sounded GREAT despite that.

Stick ice picks in my ears. A beautiful rendition? McClain is the only person who can do this justice. This idiot's perpetual shit eating grin begrudges the pain Van Gough suffered that this song intends to capture. This should be purged from the public record. If you've never felt pain this deep, you shouldn't perform it.
clay proved RIGHT THAN AND THERE he was a true pro ! when he was critized for missing the words by the judges he said nothing ! he wasn't about to whine like sooo many contestants did and still do! only on AI rewind we found out the truth.
This is so beautiful even though he missed his cue because Nigel Lithgoe decided at the last minute to make the song longer and add a verse without allowing Clay to practice it. Bravo, Clay. Even when you mess up you're the best!!!
the judges kept saying clay forgot the lyrics. what happen was they changed the arrangement of the song in the last minute without letting him know, so when he realized what they had done, he did his best to fill in the gap.
This is the song that made me a fan. I wasn't even watching that season of AI but I switched on the TV one day and Clay was halfway through this song and I fell in love with his voice. I have ~emotional connections~ to this song (my dad, Vincent, committed suicide before I was born and Mum used to play this song and tell me about him), and watching it again today almost brought me to tears. Thank you for putting this up.
I've never noticed where he forgot the lyrics to this song. Heard the original many times. I must not have paid that much attention until Clay sang it.
I am not a Claymate, however, even though Aiken didn't like this song, it fooled me....truly the most talented of all the performers in all seasons....even when he looked keeky, he sang perfect...then he evolved physically.......truly was the American Idol....a young fresh pop star, unfortuantely didn't do too much although he is now in Spamelot...way to go Aiken
I have never heard him on the radio.. And I listen to the radio all the time...... I wish I could hear a couple of songs once and awhile.. Although I don't like the songs he sings on the albums..
Every one I heard sing it does it better than Don Mclean, lol,, the man had song righting abilities, not a voice lol,,and his version was kinda rush, most others sing it in a more sensuous way
Clay is awsome on this song,,,slowed it down a bit,, made it more melodic..they downed him on it tho,, and he did that shitty song Unchained Melody by the R brothers, ,which sucks .. omg , i hate that song,, no soul whatsoever

your stupid opinion does not make mine ironic. i wonder who will sell more albums in their career. by the way don mclean also wrote this beautiful song. Gay Aching just butchered it.

p.s. listen to what the Idol judges had to say about clay's embarassing version of this masterpiece ... "boring"..."dreary"..."terrible". it's kind of "ironic" isn't it.
Sounds like you're just bitter and angry because somebody dares defy your beautiful opinion. You seem to have Clay Aiken for no reason.
And he did it better than the original. Just because the judges didn't agree doesn't make it true. They only said it was "bad" because he miscued, and he pulled back to make it better than expected.
So, please. Get the fuck off my internet, you sore loser. :3
I know they only have 90 seconds but he should have done better!

Not a good version, sounds like he's trying to use an R&B or soul style that doesn't work for this song. No real sense of interpretation either.

OMG, this is horrible. Classics like this song should not be sang other then the original artist.

Another slice of mediocrity murdering a beutiful song that is art.
Wailing trailing trash. "Singers such as this need putting out of their misery.
Truly deplorable. Trash. absolulte destruction of a wonderful song and he even forgot half the lyrics.
RUBBISH.

This guy might have a decent voice, but he butchered this song. Its supposed to be sung softly, not like a top of the pops reject. Fail

Dislike. Sorry but this song can't be done correctly by anyone but Don.

I have never liked this song. It doesn't matter who is singing it.
Including the original. But, Clay finished it like a professional and
made no excuses. He has a great voice. Really enjoy listening to him.
