Edna's real annoyance here - at the audience - is what sparks the laughter. Then it becomes infectious as Sheen sees the inversion. The inversion is that the performer NEVER comments on the audience. Edna turns on them immediately. For an American this is performer-suicide. Your man (Barry) is actually an intellectual with Brit-Oz roots, and has a renowned art collection. Possibly, Sheen has realised this and is doubling up due to his knowledge of the paradox in the character's stance...?

Please help a stupid American. This is beside the point of Dame Edna's riotous comment, "What a stupid noise!" An earlier poster explained that "don't let the side down" means "don't let Martin see that you are thick." So I can see how letting the side down relates to revealing some weakness or foible. Was this phrase originally literal? "Let down the side" of what object? What is the derivation? Google is not helping on this one. Thank you.

In this context "the side" means the same as "the team". In Australia you would normally talk about the 'side' you play on, rather than the 'team' you play on in sports like cricket or rugby. So 'don't let the side down' means 'don't do something stupid that will disappoint your teammates'. This clip is particularly funny for Australians--'what a stupid noise' is a comment I can remember a couple of teachers making at school if we all reacted sarcastically to something said in class.

I laughed all over again reading that Australian teachers sometimes have occasion to say 'what a stupid noise' to their classes.
