I think it's unfair for anyone to imply that Americans "don't get it". American jokes are more "hit and run" whilst British-style of jokes are the kind that often gives you pause and can be dead funny even if barely moved your lip. Both styles are great and have given birth to great comedians as well. Love all!
yeah i like martin sheen...they need to bring edna back to our tv screens...i remember this show being on and laughing so much even now i just been in stiches wha?...shes still got it so do more tv edna <3
I saw this when it first went out and it was one of the best laughs ever... the types of laugh where you cant even bring your hand to your mouth to quieten yourself =D
Pure genius at work and such an uplifting clip.Martin Sheen's reaction to Dame Edna's off the cuff remark is pure gold.Sunshine on a rainy day and in the UK in summer I can view this on replay and go to bed happy !!!
Edna's real annoyance here - at the audience - is what sparks the laughter. Then it becomes infectious as Sheen sees the inversion. The inversion is that the performer NEVER comments on the audience. Edna turns on them immediately. For an American this is performer-suicide. Your man (Barry) is actually an intellectual with Brit-Oz roots, and has a renowned art collection. Possibly, Sheen has realised this and is doubling up due to his knowledge of the paradox in the character's stance...?
@emanitudism I was cheekily responding to someone from the UK who had posted the comment: "I love watching Americans dealing with Edna--we here in the UK have known her for years and we've gotten used to her in a way that people in America haven't yet."
Thank you, though, for pointing out my appalling ignorance. Such a stupid noise.
Would've loved to have seen the full interview of this. Think I saw some of this when it was on TV. Just realised through the thumb nails at the side that Dame Edna is wearing the same dress here she later wears on The Tonight Show.
I love watching Americans dealing with Edna- not that I mean that as an insult to Americans but we in the UK have got used to her in a way that the USA hasn't yet- but we've had thirty years extra with her (I think).
*humphreys, she is really good saw her today in San Fransisco in her up close and personal tour sat in 2nd row about 3 feet from her very good show around 500 people
Please help a stupid American. This is beside the point of Dame Edna's riotous comment, "What a stupid noise!" An earlier poster explained that "don't let the side down" means "don't let Martin see that you are thick." So I can see how letting the side down relates to revealing some weakness or foible. Was this phrase originally literal? "Let down the side" of what object? What is the derivation? Google is not helping on this one. Thank you.
Whaaaat are you talking about? shes talking about herself and the audience in front of her guest dont let the side down its a saying in britain i dont know about the USA, if somebody does somthing stupid in public who you know you say dont let the side down.
In this context "the side" means the same as "the team". In Australia you would normally talk about the 'side' you play on, rather than the 'team' you play on in sports like cricket or rugby. So 'don't let the side down' means 'don't do something stupid that will disappoint your teammates'. This clip is particularly funny for Australians--'what a stupid noise' is a comment I can remember a couple of teachers making at school if we all reacted sarcastically to something said in class.
Thanks amadej6. I clearly misunderstood - glad to be set straight that here, side=team. I laughed all over again reading that Australian teachers sometimes have occasion to say 'what a stupid noise' to their classes. Hard to imagine any of my teachers ever upbraiding students with a remark so biting yet simultaneously playful. (At least, that's how that comment feels to me.)
Oh, and I forgot to mention, it's a credit to him that he wanted to keep learning for it's own sake! A man with his wealth and success, could simply relax and play...but he's still pushing himself to learn and grow!
you're so right. some people feel like they have to "learn" and they just strive to get the wealth he has, but he already has that luxury and still wants to learn and that's adorable. i can imagine him in his classes, taking notes diligently, asking questions, really valuing the experience. :) it's just so cute to see that joy in his eyes.
When Martin Sheen tells Edna what he studied in Ireland. Some of the audience make a gasp of oh arrhh like he did something super impressive. Then Edna says what a stupid noise, which it was, and everyone cracked up laughing. Then she says to Martin It's surprising how silly people can get in the presence of higher learning.
Barry Humphries is one of my role models, and I'm in love with Dame Edna Everage. In comparison to Hitler I think you, lets just say... did a little better Bazza. You know, like many blokes I often fantasize about Edna. If I was only worthy to step into one of Kenny's frocks, I think I could get a little giggle happenning too. Thanks for the great work Bazza we need more men like you.
yes avid, she does make me feel so proud to be australian, and to know that there are people out there with the same sense of humour, and intelligence to boot. lol
could someone please tell me what does she say after the "stupid noise" when all start laughing?she says something like "don´t..." the rest i didn´t understand :/
I saw Dame Edna on her "Royal Tour" of North America in summer 2001. She had just come from Houston where there had been a flood, so she had to work with almost nothing on stage but her gladdies. I was astonished at the performance of this consummate "showwoman".
No one has the comic ability of Barry Humphries, over 50 years in refining this genius. Fuuniest bugger on earth and I have never seen one item that has not been hilarious, except for the Sandy Stone character which can be extremely depressing.
Does anyone know which clip it is where she says how much she hates lip-readers and covers her mouth so they won't know what she's saying? It's so funny, but I can't find it!
She says, "Welcome back, viewers, or to the sight-impaired, listeners." She is implying that any blind people watching cannot view it, but have to listen instead.

Martin Sheen's reaction to 'stupid noise' says much about him.
He is clearly much more than he 'presents'.
An example of what Hollywood ' presents', as opposed to the real person.

Thank you.
