  • It is a testament to Lennon that he was tuned into these artists that remained largely overlooked and obscure but put out fantastic music, like this great classic by Arthur Alexander. I never heard the original before tonight. Always loved the song.

  • I first saw the beatles version, i´m a huge fan of the beatles. I think the beatles covered it well, it´s just as good as thisone =) but arthur's voice is really beautiful =D

  • Great song, wonderful voice, nobody can touch Arthur Alexander on this one.....nobody..

  • Beatles suck. Arthur is the MAN !

  • @zebula8 if the beatles suck then music period suck cause its none out there that sound better then theres

  • honestly to me it's pointless to compare such iconic musicians. different people have different taste of music. anyway i madly love this song. thanks for posting

  • @QueenieG7 and thanks for the comment.

  • Ye, this is better than beatles

  • @kblera55 Yes, but The Beatles were far better musicians and wrote songs a million times better than Arthur's best work.

  • this beutifull tru heart song never gone no more forever this kind of song are wrote in everybodys heart and remains forever and ever

  • alright! whos the wise guy that thumbed this down!?!

  • @TehGamingWinners

    Dick Hertz.

  • @bobyoung53 Man, no cover of a soul song ever done by the Beatles is better than the original! They were pop singers, not soul singers.

  • @calwaite Duuude, saying that The Beatles were only pop singers is very ignorant. Have you actually heard The Beatles?

  • @venezmilord I didn't say the Beatles were "only" pop singers, as if implying pop singers weren't good singers. I simply said they were "pop singers," meaning their voices were not really great for singing soul music...which they aren't. Most pop singers lack a deep in the gut passionate sound, and that passion is what makes soul music so appealing to me. I've heard every song the Beatles ever made, many of which were masterpieces. I mean the songs were masterpieces, not their singing.

  • @calwaite Heh, okay, I misunderstood you slightly then but I still don't agree with you. I don't think they're voices only work for pop songs at all. Ah well. :D

  • R.I.P Aurthur Alexander

your body may have died but your music still lives in the lives and hearts of many people

  • @DidYouJustMakeThatUp My pleasure.

  • @bobyoung53 Ha! smh. You're a fool, and you don't even know it.

  • i dont care if the song is singing by the beatles, arthur, pearl jam, for me all the version are great because this song is really lovely and beautiful

  • Pure Magie

  • AA's original version is my favorite by far. The flip side of the 45, "Where Have You Been" , is very good also. Steve

  • @bobyoung53 nothing is better than an original

  • magnifique my friend love it !!!!!!!!!!!

  • absolutely lovely

  • john lennon was a big arthur alexander. first beatle album has " anna ( go to him ) " an arthur song.

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53 Very true.

  • This will be my last song to listen tonite on YT. I don't know why but this makes me in tears everytime I hear it, and I don't care if I sound odd, but it makes me want someone to hold me. Thank you Sir... have to listen it again. X

  • @Marievil68 Strangely, if you look back at the very first comment two years ago, grandprix63 says much the same thing. But I think he felt that because the song is so exquisitively good, rather than the romantic sense of longing I know you feel. I can see (hear) why...

  • @Marievil68 I know the feeling! I am 57 years old and still love these songs!

  • I heard this for the first time on Little Steven's Underground Garage, on XM satellite radio. It just sent chills up my spine. I can't find the record and I want it. I notice that this artist has written a lot of great songs. It's awesome to discover something you didn't know about before, and I am a total music trivia freak. What a great voice!

  • @vkuhl Even after 25 years of knowing this song, it still delights in every way!

  • Yes, under THE BEATLES one can find them...

  • A great soul voice! I also like the way Beatles kind of turned it into a pop song, to suit their own style. A good song can always be interpreted in several ways, and this is certainly a good song! It's great to hear the original!

  • I always loved the beatles recordings of this song, but never heard the original until just now. This guy was a genius. No wonder John lennon loved his songs.

  • Arthur wrote Anna by the beatles, 100 lbs of clay by Macdaniels, and everyday I have to cry some ......... my favorites anyway.

  • Marshall Crenshaw does a great job with this song too. Both Marshall and Arthur are really overlooked ./

  • Another great Arthur Alexander track.

  • This song brought tears to my eyes too...oh wait, I was cuttin onions while I was listening to it.

  • it`s a wonderful song

  • I had never heard the Beatles' sing 'Soldier of Love' until a few minutes ago, though the song sounded vaguely familiar from somewhere in my life. Nor had I heard Arthur Alexander sing the song and presumably he predated their version. Both the versions are bloody good, and what has happened here occurred so often in the 1960s, namely British musicians praising their often obscure influences and people then beating a path to the door of the originals. Everyone wins.

  • @Cogniscent1 Both great versions of a great song. Yes, this is the original.

  • @Cogniscent1 Well said, my good man.

  • @Cogniscent1 Yes that's the point, everyone wins. Even Pearl Jam does a very nice version live. And Beatles' version might have been a hit single. But the original is so perfect in any case. Arthur Alexander is a great 60s "original musician", and his last album should be heard too, very good material.

  • Well put by boneypart and Aerosmith589. I agree completely. Great song

  • music back in these days was nutritious. music today is like the worst junk food.

  • Marshall Crenshaw did a great version on his debut LP.

  • GENIAL

  • nostalgia,muito bom.....

  • Does anyone have a version of the song 'Radiates that Charm' ?

I really like that song, and can't find A.A. doing it, only a cover-but a wicked cover!!

  • I have a version of Arthur doing it, but its on an old album, so if I can I'll try to post it on here. That's if I can figure out how to do it!

  • Arthur Alexander's a true legend ;)

  • first heard this great song sung by the beatles at A cavern lunchtime session

  • Cool, bet you got some good memories from back in the day!

  • Behold a time when there were people with real talent making actual music, this was music at it's best.

  • amazing arangement

  • Yes Powergirl, & if there was any justice Arthur would have had big US & UK hits with Anna, You Better Move On, Shot of Rhythm & Blues at the very least. There has never been a R&B singer songwriter to match him in my opinion. In my estimation, Arthur was to R&B what Billy Joe Shaver is to Country music.

  • This song should have been a hit somewhere in the US.

  • me agree! I discovered this great tune from The Beatles Live at the BBC box set!

  • That's a great box set, but I've lost the second CD!!

  • That's a shame! I'm saving up to get the whole remastered CDs next month!

  • I must admit with shame and head hung that I first heard this when Pearl Jam did it, lol =)

Someone said it right: old music is amazing...thanks for posting.

  • Arthur Alexander + "Soldier of Love" = perfection. Clean, soulful, classic! They sure don't make 'em like this anymore.

  • Ohh Yeaaa

  • Now THAT's the way it's supposed to go!!!!

  • I really do enjoy listening to Arthur Alexander's music, but I also like Marshall Crenshaw's version of this song. The first time I heard this song was when Marshall Crenshaw appeared at a small club in San Diego.

  • sitting here with my pops havin a toot, thinking the exact same thing. Older music is amazing, what happened..?(dont answer that lol) i know what happened.. thanks for the upload :)

  • Absolutely fantastic.

    Thanks

  • older music is amazing. i think the original from Alexander is better than the Beattle's cover of this song. his voice fits better with the song.

  • Love both versions, but I think I'd have to agree with you.

  • Comment removed

  • nice song. love it.

  • It almost brings tears to my eyes. Fantastic, never heard it before.

  • It had a similar effect on me when I first heard it. Impossible not to sing along with it, mixing lead and backing.

  • u r right --perfect lead and backing...perrrfection
