  • @imyy4upeople1 Well spotted, I hadn't noticed that. Gene was an absolute dancing genius and managed to convey grace and strength at the same time.

  • AMO A GENE!!!!

  • The greatest. long live Gene :-)

  • What was great about him was that he danced in a way that didn't compromise his masculinity.

  • now i must say thats pretty awsome

  • I could watch chuck norris fight himself and this would still beat it.

  • This shows how accurate his steps was, as precise as a freakin' mirror!!!

  • BEAUTIFUL SCENE. LOOK HOW N SYNC DEY R. HOW COME WE DON'T HAVE ACTORS LIKE HIM NOW ON TV.?

  • dude that's freaking awesome

  • what id give to dance like that

  • Utterly breathtaking!

  • with the type of technology at that time, dancing in sync with an "imaginary" guy is no easy thing to do!. Gene Kellys is awesome

  • @TheMayor4life

I just stumbled across this vid, then, on reading a few of these comments, couldn't help but notice your disgusting post.

Would you care to say WHY you think this is "wack", as you so immaturely put it?

  • @dazzalogan if you don't like my comment, kill yourself

  • he is amazing

  • he was a genious. i love him . he makes me feel well

  • Haha just break the window and walk away. I love this.

  • A 100% MORE of Gene Kelly than you've ever had before! I think I'm gonna go and have an orgasm, pardon me for a minute...

  • Comment removed

  • good grief! he was so wonderful! i wish there were still entertainers like this. i have never seen this clip before- THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING IT!!!

  • Wow, I love his dancing. He always made it look so easy. He was a very talented dancer.

  • I love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Did anyone ever hear the song 'Dancing with Myself'?

Well, in this, Gene Kelly really is!

  • Excelente!

  • class- act gentleman-

  • they just dont make men like that anymore!!... mother may i!!

  • @channonize Does it REALLY matter what mother thinks? ;-)

  • Damn, with technology available at that time it must've been hard to create such a piece, I even doubt with todays technology one could re-create it without difficulties. I mean doing 2 takes which when combined could create the same timing and movement, and you cant even see a lag between the two takes. I knew he was a talented person, but never knew that he was THAT TALENTED.

  • @bhlacks

Kelly was hella-talented, that' s why I continue to be amazed by his work! I must say, (& Kelly had noted before that this effect was achieved with the help of Stanley Donen as his assistant. I 'm not a fan of him as a person but Donen was "hella-talented". He was a creative force along w/ Kelly in his earlier film work. But make no mistake, Kelly was the man with mega-talent--& a killer smile! Love him!

  • una secuencia revolucionaria para la epoca...con un bailarin sencillamente inmortal

  • And without computers!

  • Its Raining (Dancing In the Rain) Again, From Breton2Robert is and absolute surprise

  • he's the true master of dance. Can you imagine having to do a dance that complicated perfectly? and then have to do it again? wow. They thought this scene was impossible to do at the time because of the limited technology. If he wasn't so talented this scene wouldn't exist. He makes dancing look as natural as breathing.

  • Best dance scenein history.

  • haha i love how he just breaks the window and walks away! great dancer

  • They had to coreograph the dance and all the camera moves. The second dance had to be designed to meld with the first and syncopated. All had to be marked on the street INCLUDING CAMERA MOVES then matched perfectly, TWICE---BY HAND! Genius

  • I wonder how many takes that took to seam everything properly.

  • Now THAT's how you twist double exposure of a film to your whim. Thanks for posting such a beautiful gem!

  • he was so hot... and his dancing is amazing

  • just *O*

  • ladies and gentlemen the true lord of the dance.... *bows*

  • Extraordinary. No, that word doesn't even describe it. Gene Kelly's talent was beyond words. If there was ever a person I'd most want to meet it would have been him.

This is an incredible example of his brilliance & ability. Just the fact that he could do an entire routine twice to match himself... Unbelievable.

    Thanks so much for posting.

  • I feel the same way. I haven't watched this movie in years and I'm still speechless. Not only is he the most talented dancer and choreographer, but also a talented singer, actor, director, and producer. He was the Jack of all trades, a genius, and a master at all he did.

  • that was simply amazing

  • Shut up, Beavis.

  • No,you shut-up,Butthead!

  • Gene Kelly was one of the most creative performer we ever had... always trying different things... one of my dance hero.... thank for posting

  • 2:46 That looks so hard to do once, let alone twice and make it look exactly the same.

  • That's called a pirouette. For him, it was nothing.

  • That's amazing and funny to watch at the same time! wow Gene Kelly was a truly master of masters!

  • Amazing !!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow! Like, wow! He was just incredible. I'd never seen this one before, thanks for posting it. That was entertaining!

  • gene kelly is my hero! thank you so much for sharing!

  • That is just extraordinary. I can't begin to imagine how on earth they did that, particularly Gene's mirror image leapfrogging the "real" Gene. Shows you really don't need incredible technology when you've got geniuses on board...

  • I'm absolutely agreeing with xTwilightProphetx, only Gene Kelly could do such an amazing thing!! what a coreography!! and with yourself----well that's a pity we can't see so much 'great-things-like-this' today, if ya know what I mean; this is what I call QUALITY, maybe with lower technology, but with harder work, and man this looks goood...not to mention the music.+it's Gene Kelly who's doin all the stuff, not 3 or more people,like1 dancer,1 actor,1 singer and so on, and that's the real talent.

  • Indeed, as the technology was almost not existing, they had to rely on pure simplicity and ingenuinity. That was what Gene had.

He was one of the great ones.

  • Sadly, the closest thing today that would fit Kelly's talent is break dancing. Nothing against break dancing, but it has taken the youth, improv path instead of Kelly's mainstream production appreciated by a broader audience.

  • Absolutly brilliant and amazing, we need more of this!

  • Only Gene Kelly could do a clip like that.

Such a fantastic actor and dancer. They just don't make them like that anymore...

  • Seminal moment not only in Gene Kelly's career, but in the evolution of dance on film. Nobody else was doing anything like this in 1944 and Kelly and Donen instantly set the bar to a ridiculously high height that only they themselves would manage to surpass.

Seems inconceivable now to think that one of MGM's most illuminous and valuable musical stars had to go on loan to Columbia before his Bosses finally realised what they had.

  • @JohnnyContagious

True that! May I add, Kelly paid for that because MGM never made that "mistake" again since they refuse to loan him to play Pal Joey on film. Yeah, Sinatra may have been the character in real life but it didn't translate on film at all. Kelly did Pal Joey on Broadway in 1940 & rock it out (so I've heard-I wasn't there!) Good observation, Johnny C!

  • @hellasexy22 That's right. Louis B. Mayer used Gene as a pawn in a personal feud with Samuel Goldwyn. Gene was all set to be a Broadway star with his name above the title after his success with 'Pal Joey' in 1941, but David O. Selznick came calling and took him to Hollywood... a man who knew virtually nothing about musicals!

  • quelle prouesse! la danse dans une "forme" de boxe au toi ...Merci maestro !

  • I don't even know how the filmmakers managed to pull off the effects...

  • Overlapping, and ghosting him in. The impressive parts were more with the choreography, and the small stunts like Gene jumping over himself. Now that was damn impressive.

Well, the whole scene was impressive, but that one thing is what really stuck.

  • sensational. gene kelly is my favourite actor from that amazing era, and to this day no one can top him...what happened to this kind of talent??? im 15 and i just feel as if i was born in the wrong century completely:(

  • Yeah, me 2.

  • the problem is that the world hasn't been looking for it.

  • exactly the same for me too!

  • one is more than enough- two is just magnificent :)

  • GREAT!! GREAT!!!! GREAT!!!! Greatest Idea And Footage Ever!!!! This Should GoDown In Cinematic History As The Single Greatest Action Sequence Ever.

  • This dance looks hard enough by itself, let alone having to do it twice in exact synchronization. Who else could make a dance out of internal conflict?

  • amazing

  • El Mejor... Gene Kelly, no hay otro igual!!!

  • Truly A Great And Inspiring Scene!! Motivates Me Daily To Deal With Inner Conflict. I Always Think Of This To Get Me Thinking Straight...

  • just AMAZING! ... Gene Kelly= My HERO!

  • Excellent choice. To think, this was done pre-CGI as were all of the old classics. I doubt any dancer today can duplicate this feat.

  • No, pee wee herman dressed like Gene Kelly, thereby disgracing the suit and bowtie forever.

  • in our lifetime there are people that come along once in a lifetime and touch us forever with thier magic and gene kelly was one of those people.

  • I can write for you any sheet music

  • In rehearsal, they had Gene Kelly's good friend and choreography partner Stanley Donnen (who directed Singin' in the Rain) rehearse and mark the part of the reflection so Gene could get the timing just right for both seperate dances.

  • ...i have no words.

  • Tap Dancing is probably one of the most underrated forms of dance.

  • You are so right, I go to tap lessons and I always think of Gene Kelly as soon as I hear that tapping sound!!! YAY TAP DANCING!!!!

    Nicole

    xXxXxXx

  • "You gotta make up your mind about this, and i'm gonna see that ya do this now..." by the power of TAP DANCE!! X3

  • El mas grande!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • El mas grande!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When I get on youtube to watch Gene Kelly's videos one after the other... I usually think that I couldn't watch anything greater... but everytime I discover a video I've never seen... this guy keeps on surprising me!! He's the freaking best EVERYTHING that placed a feet on Earth!

  • Simply COOL!!!!!!!!

  • This is amazing, thought I'd seen everything,

but this is a first. What's it from? Gene

    Kelly was truely great.

  • This is from Cover Girl- a great movie!

  • He's so in unison with himself LOL

  • Genious! Defies gravity.

language doesnt help here ; )

  • Gene Kelly broke barriers in dancing and film. He's brilliant and talented. A one of a kind man who will inspire an endless amount of generations. Absolutely amazing!

  • I'd never seen this. Thanks for posting.

  • i live the way its the same set as singing in the rain

  • OMG I LOVE HIM, but this is not his best work. Has anyone seen the roller skate one??? That is truly genius!

  • I LV GENE KELLY

    !!!!

  • I dunno... this guy is old fashioned, new aged, modern art guy...

    ... I can't help it... he's the best!

  • that was awesome! That guy was something else.

  • So incredible. Such an innovative dancer!

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • That was AMAZING. Two Gene Kellys - what could be better? ;)

  • I can't think of anything better than two Gene Kellys! More of him to go around ;)

  • @kellyakabilly theres something better A gene in each country :D

  • Gene Kelly is amazing. His talent never ages. My 20 year old daughter was inspired to study media and the cinema after falling in love with "Singing in the Rain" as a teenager, she's a 3rd generation Gene Kelly fan.

  • WOOOOAAAAAA!!!! This scene is amazing!!!!

  • I LOVE GENE KELLY..:):) ...i dont think i noe anyone who doesnt like him,,,....

  • Sweet!

  • this is pure genius!!!!

  • Kelly's finest number, bar none.

  • damn, that was so freaking awesome.

Once again, thankgawd for youtube for bringing this priceless classic to us

  • Gene Kelly is the man.

  • HELLS YEAH!!!!

    I LOVE THIS GUY!!!!

  • They did believe this scene was possible to do with the technology at the time. It wouldn't have been possible if Gene Kelly wasn't the most amazing dancer ever. His timing and placement in this dance had to be perfect not just for one dance, but for the second part aswell. This scene blows my mind.

  • Not to take anthing away from todays dancers, but this is raw self taught talent. Not too many can make that claim.

  • How did they do that without CGI, Lucas Technology, PCs or Macs?

  • Not to spoil the magic or anything but it was filmed twice once with all the props and backgrounds and once with a black cover over everything. Then the two images were put over one another. It added months to filming and a large part of the budget was spent on it.

    Hope that helps.

  • Amazing!

  • that was a very interesting piece of information. thank you!

  • It makes me upset too. Great entertainers who could dance, sing, act, produce, direct and just be funny are long gone (save Jamie Fox). In those days, there were no singing, dancing, or acting lessons. You had it or you didn't. That's what made them so great. It's called talent.

  • There's just so much creativity and ingenuity in these old "classic" shows that just aren't there on broadway anymore. I miss the time (even though I wasn't alive..) when the dancing and singing were pure, and the acting was genuine. Where'd it go? :(

  • Pure genius!

  • My dance teacher talks about him all the time ^__^ Gene is a dance GOD!

  • AHA so here is the real Master !!!

  • muito bom

  • This was the hardest for Gene of his dances....and he did it with near perfection!! He is truly amazing!! There are none like him...and never will be!!!

  • What a great innovative scene...

  • OMG! this is SO amazing! Thank you for posting

  • Whoa! This is way cool!

  • Good though

  • ok. Gene Kelley is amazing. Why the HELL did this get 4 stars? Also watch the worry song.

  • This man was a genius

  • BRILLIANT. Thanks for reminding everyone that special effects existed long before George Lucas. :) No modern-day CGI can top this.

  • This scene rocks! (Figuratively speaking, of course.) What year was this movie released?

  • 1944

  • This sequence reminds me of Michael Jackson's panther dance in Black Or White. Especially the part where he smashes the window with the bin.

  • WOW

  • Just amazing !!

  • Not seen this before. Amazing dancing and great SPX for the time.

  • things where so beautiful in those days...now it'all rap and that stuff, it's not art like this is....

  • Amazing - I'd never seen this one, and the way he managed to film it twice over and coordinate it to dance with 'his imagination' so perfectly shows the level of rehearsal and dedication he had. Thanks!

  • ahh gene, awesome!

i'm 16 and i've been into this guy since i was little, he's one of my hheroes! i wish i could dance like that!

  • you are good mr kelly

  • Does anyone in here know if Gene Kelly ever received a Walk Of Fame??

  • 6153 Hollywood Blvd

  • Thank you so mutch ;o)

  • mmmmmm... Great Dancer Five stars!!

  • Just Amazing! That takes incredible stamina to do. I smoke cigarettes...i know...haha I'd be winded after the first 20 seconds. I've been a fan of his all my life. It's good to see the comment from the teenager who's says Gene is his idol. Not many people that age appriciate this, or even have a clue who Gene Kelly is.

  • AMAZING!

  • Brilliant! Its a similar concept to Astaires Bojangles of Harlem number.

  • I tap dance and Gene Kelly is my tap dancing idol. I am only a teenager yet I love Gene Kelly.

  • hes the greatest. period.

  • Wow! That's a very ambitious performance and a very ambitious bit of special effects for that time.

  • Wwoo.. Cool!! Fantastic!

  • Can you spot the error? The second Gene is supposed to be his reflection from the window, so should be mirrored, but it's an exact copy instead (given away by the chest pocket with the handkerchief).

Anyway, still an impressive clip by the amazing Mr Kelly...

  • Apparently Kelly called this, the "alter ego" number, one of the hardest things he ever attempted. It basically made him. MGM had lent him out to Columbia, Rita Hayworth's studio, for this movie. They never loaned him out again.

  • Amazing choregraphy. But what i love the most is that it's slightly scary..(the music is almost non melodic)

  • I agree, it's controlled chaos...It's really cool

  • Amazing for it;s time, although - it must be noted that it is a dancrs ability to be able to perfect a performance with excellnt timing and precision that made this so brilliant! That's Gene Kelly!

  • This is quite incredible when you consider that digital effects and motion control cameras didn't exist at this time.

  • Stop talking to your evil reflection... it scares me :(

  • thanks

  • what movie is it from?

  • "Cover Girl"

  • my precious father, who just turned 93 and is also named Gene, reminded me of Gene Kelly when he was a young man, and sorry, i cant share his photo, i only have it in a photograph.....needlesstosay, I"m a Gene Kelly fan from way back!!!! posted by MY dads daughter!!!! sharon T. from ohio

  • If It were 1955 and I were legal, I'd totally be trying to do him

  • Why can't movies have scenes like this anymore?
