I remember the week after this game Sports Illustrated did a story on the game. The first page of the story was big picture of Carter being mauled at the goal line on fourth down of the goal line stand and the title it big letters was was "Welcome to the Big Ten!". It was amazing.
I was at this game in the Penn State student section. It was awful up until that TD by Alexander. At that point you could sense the momentum and the crowd never got really loud again. We were a big underdog and I thought we had no chance of winning this one. My second favorite Michigan game of all time, (the '97 Penn State whipping is #1).
Wow, As I recall this was the first ever meeting.. MIchigan had a lot of talent. Derrick Alexander was so smooth. Jon Ritchie and Trevor Pryce ended up transfering, and Malveaux quit the team. Great video. That goal line stand was one of the greatest moments in Um history.. great post.
At the beginning of the clip when PSU attempted to go for FG, watching number 3 jumping and attempting to block brings me memories of Tripp Welborne (nbr 3) and Vada Murrary (nbr 27) in the late 1980's. Man, they were a beast! There's a story about the blocking tandem in "Tales from Michigan Stadium Vol II". Hey Wolverineshistorian, don't you have several clips of Welborne and Murrary blocking kicks?
i love to hate michigan, im a psu fan, and michigan is my favorite rival, i was sad to see llyod carr go cuz i wanted penn state to beat him while at michigan, but i think we will beat michigan this year finally
Wow great game. That Todd Collins to Mercury Hayes td pass looks a lot similar to when Brady threw the gw td pass to marcus knight in 99' in the corner of the endzone
Around the 7:49 mark, listen for a disgruntled fan in the background yelling "THERE'S 81!" Apparently, Kerry Collins missed a wide-open receiver...
On another note, I still remember how pissed off I was about this game. I was only 9 at the time but was already a die-hard PSU fan by then. But as another poster said, props for show scores from BOTH sides, as it shows how tight this contest was.
It sure is nice to watch a replay of a game and not have to see that stupid "crawl" at the bottom of the screen. Ever since 9/11 every channel does it. Although I do like having the score and time of the game on the screen, there is still something nice about not having all of that clutter on the screen at once. I miss ABC's handling of college football. Even though it is still ABC announcers, ESPN drives me nuts with their graphics. BTW, nice win by UM on this day. Classic goal-line stand!!
The other day, I heard that Joe Paterno was the first choice to be the Michigan coach before Bo. He was very close to taking the job, but he stayed because he loved Penn State too much. Paterno's a classy guy. (still can't beat michigan though)
Also thanks for showing scores of both teams, indicating that two teams played a great game. I know you show Michigan wins, however the game in 1994 between PSU/UM was one of my favorite college games I've ever watched.
Michigan-Penn State is another good Big 10 Rivalry

Michigan's slanting hard to the inside and we run right at 'em. Typical Joe.
