  • Hi Simon,

I just recently got back to throwing on the wheel...I live in Hawaii and really find your videos inspirational...not only your techniques, but your "light" positive attitude towards studio work...I started pottery in the late 60's and remember when your gf, Bernard and Hamada (Japan) came to LA/USC to give talks...unfortunately, I never saw them...it's lovely that generations of your family are still are at the wheel....is there another generation who is still potting?

    Aloha, Terry

  • @terrytokuda I am the youngest in our immediate family who is potting, after me who knows if my daughter will take it up she is11 ? my son is in the army !

I wonder if there would be interest for me to do a workshop in Hawaii !! I would love to visit there. SL

  • Simon - When you use candle wax, does it matter if it is colored wax? Does the color burn off in the kiln? I found a bag of large red candles I thought I might try. - Skip

  • I usually use white but I would think that it would burn out no problem ..SL

  • It would be so cool to have an add-on to this video that shows those same pots already fired.

  • what is the benifit to raw glazing? your the only person i have seen do it. what is the end resold diffence from bisk fireing first the glazing as to glazing raw clay then firing?

  • Hi Simon

Thanks very much for so much good info - I have learned a lot already.

I have tried to make pots with ridges on the outside like the bowl you decorate in this video - but I haven't had much luck throwing them on. Have you any tips? Do you turn the body away to leave ridges instead?

    Thanks, Dan, London

  • Hi Dan, search Simons videos for faceting, he has an excellent video on faceting a bowl which explains how to cut the sides.

  • Thanks for the advice. I actually meant the bowl in thi video that has horizontal ridges around it - not vertical facets. Any more hints welcome. Dan

  • Simon, can I use this wax technique in an electric kiln? (that's all I have !!)

Warm regards from Debbie in Florida

  • ooh meant to say too, a new loo brush!!! Gets in all the corners!

  • Just a quickie, i use a loo brush in my buckets of glaze to stir them! V handy (and cheap!). I get very scared of raw glazing.........and dont do it often. Will have another go, the wax resist looks fun too!

  • have a go. some clay in the glaze though to help bond with your pot clay body, helps to fuse the glaze to the pot ,otherwise might drop off ! SL - OK loo brush tip guys !!

  • ooooooooo aaaaaaaaa Simon's magic touch!

  • Simon, or anyone who raw glazes, do these raw glazes have a glossy finish? if not, are there others that do?

    Thanks!

  • Yes there are others (raw glazes) that are glossy...or that we can make glossy ! SL

  • I enjoyed seeing you 'panic' a little while glazing!!! I do that regularly, sad to say. ;o( I too have always had problems with fingerprints and having to touch them up, which still leaves an imperfection.

  • Interesting clip. Its always good to see new processes. Cheers.

  • Do you have more than the one kiln to fire in?

  • Just the one kiln for high temp . SL ...but I am starting soon another larger one .

  • Hi Simon !

Could I use pure bees wax ? Evelyne (from France !! )

  • Hi Evelyne - trust you are well & thanks for that info you sent me (link) -very useful. Beeswax -mmmm I cannot see why not ?! you may need to dilute with some paraffin oil so it flows off the brush. There are cold liquid waxes one can use also with some success ,but bought ones . SL

  • whats the diffrence between the raw glaze you use that you dig up and the diffrence between kone 9 glazes that you applie at the bisck stage?

  • Hi - the difference is that one is applied without a bisq firing ie the raw glaze . The others are made up largley from bought ,ready made or ready prepared materials . SL

  • Magic isn't it. Please show the result afterwards, can't wait to see. The glazing still is tricky to me. I always leave a fingerprint at the bottem of the pot by putting it on the table to dry.

The weather in Belgium is lovely now, we will have 22° at the weekend. Come to Belgium!!

    Annemie

  • Simon,

Why did you chose to use hot wax and not a water soluble one ? It ruins less the brushes, for one thing.

Very usefull clip, by the way, I am very much interested in raw glazing.

  • Hi - I have used those in the past ... at present I dont have any thats anygood , as it kind of goes off i found after a while . The brushes though it is kinder to ,as you mention . SL

  • Will you show us the result please, Simon

I hop the pot wil not fall apart! Greetings Monique

  • I go to UK tomorrow for a week , after that when i get some more work through the kiln it may get fired .I too want to see ! SL

  • Hi Simon, i learn again......

    Gerda

  • Simon - not sure what engobe is -

    Skip

  • Hi Skip - an engoge is a slip ! SL
