One of the worst officiated games of all time. Clear bias against the great USSR team from the American linesman who didn't put his flag up on 2 blatantly offside Belgian goals. Having said that, if the Soviets scored on half of their glorious chances no officials would have been able to save Belgium. Still, the Soviets got screwed. That was a brilliant team that had every chance to win the World Cup.

P.S. Most of the players were from Dynamo Kyiv this Soviet team were more Ukraine than Russia.

Too bad the first two Belgian goals were offside - BUT: guys, this is an absolute ALL-TIME CLASSIC, a great match! Don't focus just on the final result, focus on the game. 7 goals, at least 10 clear goal occasions, great skills, fast play. USSR was incredibly unlucky, but Belgium played also well, with tactical intelligence and skills. By far the best 1986 game, it was the "real" final game that year.

They had the ball a lot, probably more than Belgium and against Holland in the European Cup finals as well, but it took them twenty attacks to score! They could dribble and shoot and pass, but they had no defence and never could play effective like Belgium and Holland did. They didn't take care of their chances.

Goal of Demol (3-2) was definitly NOT offside, as you can see in the replay. Demol was totally forgotten by the USSR defense.

And Goal of Claesen (4-2) was also not offside. Ceulemans headed the ball to Claesen who stood between two Russian defenders. You can see it in the replay.

This is such a great sports memory guys. When I listen to the RTBF comment (the speaker,usually very calm and objective, lost his voice from shouting) I always have tears in my eyes even after 20 years! My 60 year old neighbor knew nothing of football but she was shouting like crazy at 2:00 am.

The entire country went crazy from then on until June 30 when the team came back home. The GrandPlace/Grote Markt was packed with Belgian flags and people chanting and dancing. Great memories.....

We got indeed help from the referee but as an underdog, Belgium has usually been on the other side: 1994: Swiss referee is so scandalously favoring Germany that he is sent home although he had been tipped for the final. Belgium out. 2002, Trinidad referee cancels a perfectly valid Belgian goal against Brazil. Belgium would have been ahead 1-0 in a match that it mastered very well. Out goes Belgium again. We all have our moments but bigger countries usually get the better treatment...

The commentator talk swedish, but I cannot see any swedish comments. Allthough I´m from Sweden. This was a brilliant game, but the swedish referee Erik Fredriksson didn´t see two or three goals which was scored in suspiocius offsidepositions.

It´s very close when Litovchenko shoots in the very ending. A very smart shot, something between a shot and a pass which almost fooled Pfaff.

Dynamo Kyiv won UEFA Cup Winners' Cup that year and Soviet team consisted almost entirely of Kiev players. The keeper Dasaev and defenders Litovchenko and Chivadze were from Spartak Moscow, Dinamo Minsk and Dinamo Tbilisi respectively. Coach Valery Lobanovski (also a coach of Dynamo Kyiv) was criticized for that. I think USSR team deserved better result. Semifinals at least.
