This test was set up totally wrong and it is a very unprofessional representation of both cameras......learn your stuff guys before you do something like this!!!!
I'm curious why every canon shot seems to be a wide angle shot and every sony shot is a closeup. Are you trying to make the canon look bad or something?
You obviously have the settings WRONG on the 5D. I just got off a 4 day shoot using BOTH of these cameras. We used the EX1 as our MAIN and 5D for our DOF money shots and 2nd camera. The moving shots wit ha 15mm fisheye u have in this are terrible. That lens needs to be stationairy. Also the 5D iris and white balance are off and lens needs wiped..lol. terrible comparison. If i was there with one 24-70mm 2.8 canon lens with the 5D the test would have been the other way around.
These are 2 different cameras, and are utilised for 2 different reasons. Youtube compression does not allow a proper comparison between these 2 cameras, an uncompressed 1080 picture on a 40"+ screen will show a difference. This however proves that 5D and EX1 can be easily cut together for web release. On a different note, interesting to see that the rolling shutter is not noticeable on the 5D.

this is stupid. if you're going to compare the cameras, make sure all your sony footage IS NOT in slow motion. and make sure all your canon footage DOES NOT have a fisheye on it. Or just try shooting both at the same focal length around the same spot. Have you tried that?
@kriogenx0 check our channel. we've tried manny different things with both systems since than. This video was done a few weeks after the 5D came out and our goal was to shoot the same action with both cameras as we would on other projects and not to do an exact test with the same parameters.
@JamesV220820 Snowboarding videos are great and all, but when it comes to cinematic quality, I consider the 5D to be much closer to a "real camera" than the Sony EX1? Why? Depth of field.
thanks for all the comments. Since this test we've used both cameras together on various productions . You're welcome to take a look our channel, which mainly features sport videos.
The best application for the 5D is low depth-of-field close ups and interviews. The best application for any video camera is... shooting skiers etc. Fast moving, exteriors shot with controllable shutter speeds. This EX footage is under-exposed (grey) and the 5D looks poor and I don't know why. Both are brilliant at what they do best so this comparison is not a fair look.
@4xforum i think you never used a real photo d-slr and camcorder under this weather and light condition would be most cams show such poor colours it's a cloudy dark day on this film.... LOL ;-)
a video that compares an experienced ex1 user with his ex1 against an experienced ex1 user using a canon 5d that it looks like he has never used. of course the sony footage will look better. this is a completely misleading test
@bmofosho dream again, the EOS 5D Mark II haven't got the best fps, you see the PWM EX1 records fast moves better! And the Sony haven't got the horrible rolling-shutter or wooble effect like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The fps and recording capabilities are better on the Sony and the Sony PWM EX1 is a real good low light camcorder comparable to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II or even in some situations better.
@AlphaPhotongraph I keep hearing about these problems with the 5D mark II, but I have not seen a god example of this. Has anyone exposed the tracking issues, is there a camera test that shows this? I am buying a new camera for making Films, and I really want as much info on this as I can get. Thanks
This is a very non-objective comparison video. Almost all of the shots made with the sony are zoomed in and slowed down, while the Canon shots are large and crappy. Please!!!
@Rodamontes it's objective cause you see fast moving scenes on skiing lol and under real life conditions and not studio light shoots. The Fanboys are here writing...
The EOS-5D MkII is capable of achieving incredible shallow depth of field for the price. I mean, a full frame (24x36mm sensor) Sony F35 camcorder does that too, but for $250,000. Canon DSLR cost only a small fraction of that. However, the DSLR is using consumer grade H.264 compression with I believe has 17Mbit/sec at the max. EX1 provides 35Mbits/sec, whereas F35 can record to HDCAM SR with 440Mbits/sec with 4:4:4 full color resolution. Nonetheless, it is a revolution to have 35mm video
Hello dvamateur. You hare wrong about the 17Mbit/sec. Canon 5D mark 2´ bitrate is about the same as EX1´ bitrate. I belive the bitrate of 5D mark 2 is maybe just a little big higher. Variabel ;-) If only it had autofocus in videomode (like Nikon D300s) then I would buy it!
this is a terrible comparison video. With the canon mark 2 5d in talented hands it can produce much better footage than the ex1 or 3. This makes the ex1 look so amazing because all the shots with the ex1 are very zoomed in and there for depth of field is showcased and with the mark 2 no shot showcased its incredible depth of field.
forget a low light light issue on a sony - just get a uv filter for that - but either way you look at these 2 camera - carl ziess is the best lens maker in the world - other brands of cameras have just tried to advance themselves against his perfections - but you cant touch carl ziess the dude made the perfect lens period !!!!!
It would appear that the shooter either didn't know how to set up the Canon for proper exposure, or that the EX1 has a couple stops more dynamic range. The Canon footage looked more contrasty, with blown highlights and darker shadows, whereas the EX1 footage looked more natural and contained more detail in highlight and shadow.
Would have been nice if the night shot had comparisons as well. That was not a low light scene. Try shooting video by moonlight alone. That's low light. ;-)
Euhm, the Sony is not a DSLR, it's a camcorder that records on SxS with Long Gop MPEG. Anyways, the Sony is pretty darn good for a camcorder in low light and has loads of manual controls that the canon lacks.
Canon has better DOF though (full frame + primes) , which I miss seeing in this video.

would have been super to have a 85 f1.2L lens or some other telephoto with large apertures to really get that bokeh.
in order to get our Sony PMW-EX1 to get great boken is either f1.9 at telephoto or add the extension, which limits the mobility.
