In northern Mn we had ice like this in the Boundary Waters in 1989 or 1990...mirror smooth and two feet thick. Lovely stuff and a friend and I skated cross country for three days covering faintly unbelievable distances.
Yes this es exhilerating, but as the author salander says - don't do this alone and make sure you have the right equipment with you! We only get ice like this in the south now and then if we are lucky!
