  • Quite simply my favourite version of my favourite track of all time, of all time : No 1

  • Curtis sounds better here than on the studio version, which is rare and quite a feat. Not happy about the guitar cutting short the introduction, though. What a song.

  • :D IAN CURTIS

  • Best band ever. Period. No other comments are necessary

  • his voice cuts into my soul like a knife...

  • joy division bleak but awesome

  • Very beautiful song.

  • There will be never a band like them... They are so... thrilling...

  • Brill song - such meaning- had the honour 2c JD at UCL just before Ian's departure. He so so talented and yet so brave to go thru with his decision to finish!!! such a waste in so many ways but also to a degree understandable x I will go out 2 this song!!!!! (with pride) thank you Ian x

  • This is my favourite Joy Division song.

  • 2:13-2:30 <3

  • I doubt this song could be any more immaculately created and performed. Every minute detail leaves a crater of an impact on the music in its entirety. The brief guitar break at 1:55-1:56 mark, for example, makes this song closer to perfection than if it were changed or omitted.

  • @freelancehero in my opinion part of ending riff 2:59 ->3:01 destroying all emotions, sumner added something bad

  • "im only 15 and all music suxx now, i listen to the doors i listen to guns n rose i listen to joy div i listen to jimi i listen to fuken rod stewart." fuck you. justin beiber is my nigger.

  • Back then he was loved, and now he is loved. RIP Ian Curtis.

I can totally understand why he did it. Depression is powerful and consuming...

  • @BonesAndBones I am sure he knows it! Our beloved Ian!

  • the thing love about this is the sorta sabbath guitar part but with out the song being too long

  • i like joy division, but i think that still is their best album, sounds very dark

  • one day 20 years from now, kids will be all idiots listening to shitty music. then one day one will go down to basement and find dirty old lps, they will like some covers, they will ask their grandparents to put the records on... and then lights will be covering over this dark land, explosions will shake the earth... and shitty music will no longer be

  • @badsign1980

    this time is now, unfortunately

  • @badsign1980 Kids are listening to shitty music right now... Once upon a time music was an art form, now it's just something packaged and sold. Once upon a time we had the Doors, the Velvet Underground, Joy Division. What do we have now? Fagboy Justin Bieber and the Xfactor. :( My friends laugh at me for listening to vinyl.

  • @finnan0333 be a kid enjoy being 15 this music is meant for the benre im sorry to tell all you kids out there that just because you listen to this doesnt make you any cooler or stupider it just makes you look like you wanna be your parents- enjoy the biebes and gaga cause soon your kids will be saying how great they are trust me enjor your youth this music is depressing as all hell and your parents dont want to hear you playing this trust me

  • @leapordonmyright it doesn't matter what age you are you have your own individual taste i'm sixteen and like this we're not sheep we'll listen to what we want

  • @leapordonmyright so, uh, did it ever occur to you that people might enjoy this kind of thing instead of, y'know, being hyper-self-conscious tools about it?

  • @leapordonmyright enlighten me with your good music then. tell me who are the greats. btw i dont know joy division that much heard about them today from other band. just found your comment ridiculous. even in one listen i found depth in this, i cant find the shit you are pointing out to.

  • @leapordonmyright your comment makes absolutely no sense. never say anything again.

  • @leapordonmyright Joy Division isn't depressing, it is the definition of beautiful ...

  • @badsign1980 and the whole world will dance to the radio

  • one of the best songs ever...

  • i agree

  • So intense, so poetic. There will never be another Joy Division. RIP Ian.

  • yes, intense...

  • this was on may 2nd,1980 only 16 days later and Ian would be gone,it's always sad to listen to this song and how he sings it...it's so intense...my fav Joy Division song.

  • so if ian die 17 days before this song was publish no one will ever know about this song sad!

This song was Recorded May 2,1980

    May 18 he Die

  • @XXXXNanoXXXxxx I suppose it's the day they recorded the live version, we at least could have the studio version.

  • @XXXXNanoXXXxxx brilliant deduction holmes !!!!!!

  • Rest In Power IAN. will always remember the musik of Joy DIVISION. raw, tearful and beautiful.

  • The raw/powerful music compliments Ian's emotive Voice so perfectly...like hand in glove!

    GENIUS!!!

  • last

  • Ian really lets the song have it at the end. Amazing.

  • From 1.49 onwards is up there with The Gods really.

  • It must have been incredible to see and hear this live in the day.The sound in that hollow hall, was the most perfect compliment to this performance. Thanks Sean.

  • merci, très bon morceau.....

  • This master piece works for me as an anti-depresiva. If you feel depressed, after listening you certainly feel better. Things get just can't get worse.

  • This is definitely the best version of New Dawn Fades - despite the fact that not all the live Still tracks are up to this standard, this version is near perfect. The whole band sounded tighter than ever here, and Ian's vocals were spot on too. Sadly, this was to be the last time they ever performed live, as 16 days later Ian Curtis was dead.

  • when was this recorded? and where was this version recorded at?

  • It was recorded at Birmingham University on 2nd May 1980.

  • @Paulph04 Brilliant deduction holmes !!!!!!!!

  • I've noticed many different ways Ian sang this from the different live recordings and album recordings posted. I wish I had came across these guys back then, Ian was one year younger, I am sure I would have dug Joy Division back then. I am posting my cover I just made of this tune. I don't do that much but I was really inspired by the melody and all the sound that comes from this as well as the feeling he trys to express.

  • this is a stunning performance...but why do people get so angry at the black sabbath comparison? it's obvious they're fans trying to express that same feeling of hopelessness and despair and doing a pretty good job of it.

  • JOY DIVISION's MUSIC IS MY OXYGEN.

    THE AIR THAT I BREATH

THANK U IAN, BARNEY, HOOKY & STEVE.

  • Thats a big call Sean - but God yes , what a build up - I think the way it sounds kinda wonky along the way makes it all the better.

They dont make them like that anymore -

and a wee ps . . Happy St Patricks Day!

  • I only got your message now my friend, you should have used reply! And thanks so much for the St Patricks day wish! Did you hear the version by the french band, I think they're called DBMB or something. Check it out.

  • Is this from Still - yes, it is, I recognise it... what a stunning crescendo - the greatest live recording ever by anyone. Jesus, that sounds so plastic a statement. Says so much about the world we live in.

  • Definitely best version of NDF. Everything is right in place. Ian singing here is...

  • Stepehn Morris on drums is absolutely divine,as is Hooky and Sumner and Curtis lmao....fucking sublime band.

  • Stephen*

  • Ian's voice on this version has a quality which is both dramatic and desperate making it a very disturbing vocal over an instrumental that by being so confident and strong offers incredible contrast.

  • i've been in love with t his song ever since i heard the cover of it in HEAT

  • In my opinion, the best song of Joy Division. Catches heart, smashes soul... that's real music. I'm claping lead guitar...

  • retard

  • What the...?

    Made me laugh....

  • Powerfull and dark, amazing. Gets into My soul so deeply, Ian's voice is like a knife cutting my soul..

  • @kusraback i couldn't agree more a voice to fill listeners with mixed emotions, for me happy Anxiety, energy fueled tragedy & emotional anger

  • vaya tela la guitarra...parece que llora....acojonante

  • Los pelos como escarpias

  • love it

  • love this song, this band and..well..I've been playing JD since 1980...still sounds fresh and involving music to my ears which nr no one can touch.

  • lo maximo

  • the best, la mejor version la del Still album.

  • absolutamente de acuerdo, pocas canciones con tanta rabia y pasión como esta versión...Me pone los pelos de punta

  • :'(

  • thanks

  • I think this is the version on the cd "still".

so deep... one of the best songs ever...

    Thx for uploading!

  • This is way beyond Nine inch Nails. I am not sorry if I hurt anyone's ego. This Soul speaks for the those who are isolated by the media because of their daimon. Ian Curtis is truly the William Blake of Alternative Music.

  • the picture with ian curtis smoking? it was a pretty available poster in the 80's. i think it was taken by kevin cummings who took a lot of their publicity photos.

  • joy division: a band for only 3 years and look at the effect they had on other bands, most influencial band and best band of all time

  • Totally agree. Thanks for comment!!!

  • @hideroad Yeah everyones ripping off there sound now, or trying to. Ian Curtis is a very important man in terms of lyrics and passion.

  • Very good track and some excellent pictures. Thanks for the upload. My favourite JD song. Where did you get that picture that is shown at the end? Brill !!!!!!
