  • Why don't you start a natural hair salon?? Blow everyone away with it- let me kno if you do because I'll be making my appointment:)

  • Is this chocolate baby yours?? Her skins soo pretty an deep. Great video with amazing lighting:))

  • Very Nice :)

  • first, let me say that your daughter is BEAUTIFUL! :) and second, thank you very much for sharing your technique for the yarn extensions. My daughter has been wanting these for some time, and Ive been rather afraid to do them ;) but Im going to chance it this weekend. <3

  • This is the best yarn extensions how-to video I've found here. I've been looking to do these on my own hair instead of dyeing it (which kills the hair). How long do you think it would take to do an adult woman's hair? I have the yarn but I'm guessing I'll need the whole weekend to do my whole head.

  • @Chunchmeow - It takes me around 8 hours to do her whole head, I think it would be pretty much the same on an adult woman. I split her head into 4 parts and each section takes me around 2 hours.

  • you did a very good job but some advise on a more natural appearance is to seal the ends after you tie them. It will lock the ends giving the illusion of a natural locked dread. You can accomplish this will sticking the ends in boiling hot water or just burning the ends with a lighter. Good Job!!!!!

  • I LOVE IT!!!

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting so many videos. I get so many ideas from you. My partner and I have adopted a AA sone and daughter. Our son has very fine hair and our daughter has more traditional AA hair. I LOVE braiding her hair and we are about to take the beaded box braids out tomorrow and I think yarn extensions will go in this weekend. Do you think it will her her hair since she is only 2 years old? I really want to try it thought. Please advise when you get time. THANK YOU! NCT

  • @ntomsonatc - yep! You can do yarn braids on a two year old. Just don't make them very long because then they are heavy and that strains her baby hair and also you don't want her to accidentally get them stuck under a leg or arm while crawling around the house (not because she can't walk just cause that's what little kids do) and I have heard of locs or yarn braids getting pulled out of the head before! (never happened to either of my girls!) Also make the boxes a bit bigger than mine.

  • I also have adopted a lil AA girl and we are in the process getting our second lil girl next month. Thanks for showing how to add these yarn extentions without rubber bands. I have serched everywhere and no know knew anything about what I was talking about. What is the yahoo address for parents who have adopted AA children that you mentioned above?

    Thansk Jan

  • It appears that she isn't using enough yarn... Tacky

  • I would suggest using regular yaki braid hair it can run between 0.99-2.99 a bag..which for her hair it shouldnt require no more then 2 or 3 bags.....love the yarn though never would of thought of that "great idea!!!!"

  • Absolutely Beautiful!! Gorgeous daughter and mom your beautiful too!!!

  • Gooo Mommy!!!! She is very happy with her new hair do....and her hair is seemly healthy, that's an extra plus! Keep up the good work!!!!

  • my friend did the exact same thing nd she has natural hair too but after she took it out i saw that her hair was thinner at the point where they started the yarn braid

  • How does burned ends look natural? I haven't seen burned ends since 1996 lmao

  • Your daughter's hair looks nice. You could burn the ends to finish the look. I just did some on one of my friend's hair for the first time and we burned the ends. It makes it look more natural. You are awesome!

  • girl i ant' mad at you..lol..you do you black girl hair..i know that's rite..i love her hair..and she is a very pretty lil girl..peace

  • question: How long do these last?

  • @lyricalbarbie1 if u take good care of them they'll last 4 like 2 months maybe longer depends

  • r you goin to let these lock?

  • @Javetta12 yarn braids dont lock, you only pull them out just like box braids

  • Love your videos and your blog!! I am having a daughter in December! Although I won't be able to do a lot of your styles until she is a little older, I know where to go when the time comes :-)

  • Wow she is blessed to have you as her mom. Thanks for sharing your talent. Continued peace and blessings to you and family.

  • wow i can see her scalp 0_o

  • It is so good to see a well informed mother on african - american hair. You do a great job. Your daughter is beautiful. :)

  • It is so good to see a well informed mother on african - american hair. You do a great job :)

  • It is so good to see a well informed mother on african - american hair. :)

  • this is soooooooooooooooooo cute!!!! i love it...love it...love it..i have never been able to understand how to do these as clear as i have today by watching your instructions...and you are soooooooooooo neattttt with it....i need to start using those clips...i think my daughter is too young to try this, as she is only 20 months..but maybe by the time she is 3 i will try it...once again, this turned out beautifully...now i'm off to watch another of your videos... :)

  • Your very good, I'm going to try this on my own hair, thx

  • it kindah look llike dreads!

  • Honeslty i must commend you her hair looks great *

i can tell her hair is/will be long beautiful and healthy !

  • OMG, you have done a wonderful job.... yes I will be subscribing. Keep it up because I could think of anything else to do to my daughter's hair. You are the bomb.

  • You're awesome, girl! She must be the kid with the best styled hair at school! LOL! Teachers probably look to see what style she'll have next and even copy them!! Great job! :D

  • hi.when you get this done, when you get it taken down does your natural hair come out?

  • @cutie111228 - Any time I take out a hairstyle some of her natural hair comes out. But that is not because of breakage or any damage from the extensions. It is because we shed hair every day, and while the hair is in braids for an extended amount of time, all of the hair that would normally be shed daily, is trapped in the braid. So when I unbraid and then do my combing and detangling I get a lot of shed hair!

  • u really have cute hair stylin i will love for u to do mines

  • Great Video! Thx....

  • this is great thanks 4 the vid i think am gonna try this style in my hair but with the rope twist the only problem is though i dont know how to burn the ends without getting my fingers burnt either

  • Olá tudo bem, sou brasileira e adorei todos os seus vídeos, me ajudou bastante. Merci

  • Very cute style for her

  • Wow that was amazing! Great job!!! Your awesome I have to try that on my daughter's hair!

  • That was a dumb comment cause it came out hot! Don't be a hater

  • Trust me. I have natural hair, I have tried to find a hairdresser that can do my hair better than me and I have failed. There are not many stylists who can style our natural hair.

Besides I think this women does a really good job with her daughter's hair.

  • what a beauiful child! shes like beauiful doll. you really style her hair pretty. i love your vidieo, her love for you, just pours out. please make more--they make me happy..

  • 2:44 Lil gurl must have been tired she was yarning and shit...lol...yarning

  • i really want to commend you, and appreciate the fact that you educated yourself on you r daughters haircare... they look very beautiful

  • @MsMeme01 I second your comment.

  • How did you learn how to do hair?

  • Wow!!! I have to do my daughters hair like that. Hers is a "mixed" quality and its so nice when its wet but as it dries.....oh dear!!!! Lol !!!!

Thanks for posting this, its a excellent instructional video!

  • an easy way to burn them is to use a duck bill clip to hold the yarn on the end and just burn the ends

  • whats a duck bill clip

  • the little long clip that's the shape of a duck's bill most of them are silver in color u can get them different colors though

  • I was looking to do something different with my daughter's hair than just cornrows straight back. I would have never to use yarn. Now I will have to convince her that the look is "her" and all of her high school friends will be wanting theirs done! Keep up the good work!

  • She is Beautiful!

  • nice im getting my dreads done this way gotta leave em yarned up 4 months

  • I started mine with yarn...I started them in December and still have them in...The growth is amazing!

  • i would love to see you braid your own hair with the yarn because i dont know how and i think you do great work

  • wow! its all so neat and uniform. i hope to god when i have a child i can do their hair HALF as neat and pretty as you!

  • You two look so cute together!!!

  • YOU GOT SKILLZ. you are great. im glad i found you.

  • Where do u get the ideas for the styles? And is your talent natural or have u been to school.

  • no I haven't been to school - I get most of my ideas from other adoptive moms on a yahoo group for adoptive parents who are learning how to care for their kids skin and hair :)

  • how many kids do you have?

  • good technique im glad i found this vid cuz i want dreads but im not sure if i want them foreveer but yarn braid will hepl me have the look of dreads but not having to have them forever

  • I love your parting technique. I have always been able to braid since I was a young child but I have never been able to braid my own hair. Thank you for your help. I braided my hairand it looks so good that I have people asking me to braid their hair.

    HOTEP.

  • learn soomething new everyday. i did not know that yarn could be used to braid. Why do u use yarn?

  • WOW! U cold wit it! :)

  • wow very talented ...you should teach in a beauty school....

    from hawaiii

  • your daughter is sooo pretty and her hair id very healthy and long.. u do a great job!

  • For a white woman your doing a great job on your daughters hair..THIS SYLE IS VERY DIFFERENT AND CUTE!!

  • I tie a knot at the end of the braid before I cut it and then I cut just a little bit below the knot.

  • @Katelynylyn You are the bomb.com!! I love the fact that you're keeping your little girl's hair natural! Its beautiful and healthy! and she's adorable! You should seriously consider opening a salon!

Much love and blessings to you.

  • Hi Mrs. Katelynlyn,

Once you have finished her hair, what exactly do you do after you cut the yarn in order to keep the ends from coming a loose?

    Thanks for your response.

  • Your little girl is beautiful and you do a wonderful job with her hair.

  • Great Jobbbbbbbbbbbb !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Good job. I appreciate you for the tutorials. Beautiful, just beautiful. Keep up the good work.

  • I'm 7 months too late but she looks like she has it all sewn up, Missgary. She has LOTS of videos gered toward teaching people how to do their daughters natural hair. I LOVE her. YOU should get off her case.

  • u kan tell doz gurlz get der hair braided alot

    but kute

  • AMAZING!!!

  • What a lucky little girl who has a mommy who gives her hair so much time and attention!

  • Such a pretty little girl! Great braids!

  • I always watch your videos you do an excellent job keep up the good work

  • what did you do to the ends it looks nice?

  • Go to part 1.. ;)

She explains how she wants to do it.. :D

  • i would love 4 u to do ma hair

  • u sure can do some hair girl!

  • That girl's hair looks awesome! You did an excellent job!

  • you show such wonderful patience

  • wow your daughter is truly beautiful and you do a fantastic job doing her hair . I used to braid my daughters hair when she was little she loved it but having dead straight hair it didnt last very long after a few days it would end up very whispy and fly away which of course looked a mess

  • Thanks for your advice regarding my parental obligation and for explaining why you sound so immature (you're 17 years old-- it all makes sense now!) And as for wasting my time: if learning how to care for my daughter's hair is a waste of time, I guess you're right!

    Stay in school :)

  • you tell her gurl ~much love~

  • Thank you :)

  • Grow up.

  • You have issues. I know MANY black women "with black hair" (as opposed to the black women with white? hair, I guess) that don't know shit about braiding. And BTW, if you don't give a damn about what Katelynlyn knows, why are you watching her videos?? Next critique: Try facts instead of rudeness. You just sound like a jealous RACIST hater. See, now you got me acting ignorant too :(

  • nice work ...i have been braiding on and off for years ....and have never used some of these styles...very creative

  • I wish she had more vids. I love her styles

  • please tell me you are including the pre-shampoo/condition and moisturizing! I was expecting 3-4 hours since it seems like it would be alot faster than using synthetic hair..... :P

  • Not to be rude, but you need to watch more of Katelynlyn's videos. I would bet she knows more about hair than not only you, but MOST black women.

  • Oh yeah, how long does this usually take in total?

  • It takes me a really long time. 9 hours. But maybe that is partlly because I am so obsessive about having straight parts! Also if you made them a little bigger and did less braids overall it would be faster. It also depends on how long the hair is and how long you make the braids.

  • You truly did a great job on here hair. How long did they last?

  • I leave them in for about 6 weeks.

  • i like the video very much can you please shows another of inividual braids.

  • aww she is precious. and she's lucky to have such cute hairdos.

  • WOW! you did a beautiful job!

  • Beautiful, you are one very lucky mom to have such a wonderful daughter. My daughter Ava watched the end of this video and loved the pictures, she kept pointing and "look look" pretty hair. Ava is only 2 but we LOVE hair and I wish we could rate you higher than a 5 your so good. I'd love to see a video of a collection of hair pictures you have if you ever get the chance. Take care and thank you for sharing!

  • I have been meaning to do a video like that for awhile. I am finally working on it. Check back soon!

  • um.. why use yarn instead of regulare synthetic hair???

  • b/c you can braid "cleaner" with yarn hair...synthetic you gotta measure in your hand how much hair to braid in each part, i like this, much better and cheaper than syn...Maxine from living single(erika alexander) wore this style, it wasn't dreds in her hair.

  • synthetic hair could rip that little girls hair to shreds! Yarn makes her hair not break pretty much

  • Braid that hair you are very experianced thank you for the update I am new to braiding and I am trying to learn all the ways Icanb braid hair.

  • Thanks for your great video's. I am also white with a daughter from Belize. Just really learning to do all the stuff myself. Just wondered if you still mist moisturerize daily and can you shampoo her hair while in yarn braids? Again THANKS and keep the video's coming. P.S. do you think the yarn drys the hair more than Kankelon?

  • I spray her hair with a moisture spray every morning - well her scalp really. I am now using Taliah Waajid protective mist bodifier. You can wash them if you have enough time for them to dry before bed. Just put some shampoo or conditioner in a squirt bottle and water it down then spray it all over the hair and rinse. I haven't done it - but others have.

  • Thank you very much for these videos Kate. Do you mean you do not wash your daughter's hair while she's wearing yarn braids ? How long for ?

  • I never wash my daughters hair when it is in a style. I just spray with a moisturizing spray every morning until we take out the style. Then she gets a good cleaning. I keep yarn braids in longer than any other style - about 6 weeks. I could probably leave them in longer, but I take them out because at that point she needs a good wash. But it is fine up till then.

  • Thank you soo much for sharing. Your daughter is beautiful. Your videos are very informative.

  • WOW! :-)

  • Great job!!!! She (and her hair) is precious!!

  • This is awesome! You are very talented and do such a great job. I love your videos

  • I love your videos, there is no way i can pay someone to do that, i will be practicing this weekend and your daughter is a beauty!

  • what do you do to the end of the hair, do you burn them, glue or leave loose

  • The first time I used snaps to secure the ends, the second time I just tied a knot at the end. Left loose they would unravel, and I tried the burning thing and couldn't get it to work.

  • First I had to tell you how wonderful I think it is that you have taken the time to do some research and learn about your girls hair. Its beautiful that you are allowing them to embrace their ethnicity!!! I want to ask is there a reaosn you are using yarn? Yarn dries out the hair...and causes breakage. Kankelon or synthetic hair would be a better alternative. As for the edges and breakage--it could be that the hair is being pulled a bit too tight in those areas.

  • Lovely, just lovely!

  • beautiful! :]

  • i'm so glad that you took the time to learn how to take care of your daughters hair, and i must say that you do her hair beautifully. your a great hairstylist;)

  • Can I ask a silly question? How do you remove the yarn once it's time to come out? Sorry if you already addressed this...with 5 kiddos I wasn't able to watch the entire video. I LOVE your videos and an super excited to try these styles on my daughter. THANK YOU...from one adoptive mama to another ;)

  • I don't know if I remembered to say this in the video or not! I usually take a scissors and cut off the part of the braid that is JUST YARN, so that I don't wast time unbraiding the parts that don't have hair in them. After cutting off the bottoms I just unbraid like I would regular braids, sometimes it slips out and unravels really easily, sometimes it takes a bit more work.

  • I saw a little girl at Target with her hair like this yesterday. Her mom paid $125 to get it professionally done. I must say that yours actually looked nicer than hers did, however I liked the way she had her parts staggered so you couldn't see as much scalp. Just wanted you to know how much you can save by doing this yourself.

  • Another beautiful hairstyle for a very beautiful little princess!

  • i think ur vids a great... if the hair gets to much activity the edges will break which is also called traction alopecia...be caurful...sometimes the hairs just needs a break from artificial things...and if you use the satin pillow case you wont need a sleeping cap.

  • shes so cute!...and you did a great job on her hair!...i hope to be able to do me AND my daughters hair like that 1 day.

  • You do such a great job showing how to care for black hair! Thank you for busting through stereotypes! I will say this though, your beautiful daughter's edges look as though they might need a little TLC. She is so sweet though! Thanks for posting these videos.

  • If you have any good tips on what I can do to help her edges I would LOVE to hear them! I kind of figured the whisps and breakage were due to being a little girl who is rough on her head. And maybe her sleep cap rubs around the edges and causes some breakage?

  • I sleep with my cap turned inside out. That way, the elastic doesn't rub up against my edges. I have seem great regrowth on my daughter's edges using just a daily rub with wild growth hair oil. That can be found in any BSS. Also try braiding the edges looser than the rest of her hair and perhaps redoing them after about two weeks. I hope you didn't think that I was being harshly critical because I wasn't. I absolutley LOVE your vids and have learned a ton from them. Thanks again 4 posting

  • Thank you! I was not offended by your comment and I was sincerly looking for suggestions. I have certainly noticed the breakage around the edges and wasn't sure that their was much I could do about it. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • try getting a satin pillow case for her...some fabrics pull on the hair...(dont know if you knew that already).

  • I would check the the sleep cap and also make sure you change her styles and partings frequently. Also braid the edges a little looser, it may mean you have to braid the edges more frequently and do more styles without the yarn. Yarn tends to shear my hair. I do my hair without extensions but I know other types of extensions don't shear the hair as much. Gorgeous little girl.

  • That looks great! It's much softer than the "fake hair" as my daughter calls it. I just spent some time doing her hair in twisties, but when we get ready for a new do, this is what we're going to try.

  • wow that was cute, i cant wait to have my daughter so i can do cute styles like this

  • Wonderful results -- simply WONDERFUL!! Makes me want to go out and buy some yarn right now!!! :-)

  • I love all the styles you can do with the yarn extensions great vid:)

  • Great video!

  • I love your hair documentaries! You are taking care of your daughters' hair wonderfully. Keep up the GREAT work.
