This is how Cynic should keep playing, with voice also. New Cynic direction is cool, but too soft and different from Focus. This album from Exivious is like Focus Part 2, but without voice.
When i first heard Cynic 3 years ago, i thought it was awesome and UNIQUE. But lately i'm finding alot of bands in same genre. Seriously this direction in music is the most inspirational i can think of. All my respect to them.
Along with some to Jimi Hendrix, since he died 41 years ago today. RIP
@TheMarga628 you're probably just saying that because tosin is a "jazz expert" or whatever you'd like to call him, but i hope you understand that there are completely different worlds of possibilities in jazz itself. this is more holdsworth influenced. i am not saying i don't like tosin; i love him by the way, but i do not hear one bit of AAL in this.
@rohanpogi It really doesn't matter, because it's a completely different band than Cynic, Meshuggah, Textures, and whatever other band. It might be inspired by them, but it brings different things to the table. I hear stuff that sounds like SikTh in there along with the other inspirations as well, so it really shouldn't matter whose baby it is :p
@amjan i wouldn't say a lot better 'cause the stuff from focus is pretty fucking badass already. i have not heard any band combine death metal and jazz as good as cynic. i'd say this is maybe easier to listen to.
nobody mentions that some members are from Textures... who are by far my favorite metal band to come out of Holland. And by far one of the leaders in the progressive metal scene... well, were. until they lost Erik... RIP Textures.
I disagree, I can not conceive LTE without keyboards. So for me this one goes in the Scale The Summit, MCM, Hideous Demons category, as for all the stuff but keyboarding.
You came off condescending (no shit Sherlock?...real sweet). And there you ago again in your reply, calling me an ass. Anyone reading our emails can decide for themselves who's being the ass. Hope your arm heals. Peace.
Thanks, oh brightest one in the classroom, but I already knew that. My point is how clear the Cynic influence can be heard in Exivious. Cynic was around way before these latest members joined the band or formed their separate group. Newer bands get influenced by older bands. That's usually how it works. It's not a bad thing. And forgive me if I'm pointing out the obvious.
@oceannamic yeah i would have never guessed Cynic was a influence its not like they were part of the band, or even like the bass player of Cynic started Gordian Knot. Nothing like that at all. These three bands never knew each other nor did they play together. lol
Nice work, boys. Reminds me of a more metallic Ohm (feat. Chris Poland) and also Jonas Hellborg's 'Abstract Logic' with Shawn Lane and Kofi Baker (who also drums on much of the Ohm stuff).
i seemed to have been addicted to this music and for a moment i was thinking how is this possible the music sucks! then i realized this could be the thought waves that are being transmitted
Whooo this sounds just like cynic yet not as death metal (well Exept for tracd in air that has no death metal and the guitarist from this band I do Beleive)
You can tell these guys were heavily influenced by Cynic (and I dig Cynic). I think they also owe thanks to Cynic for putting them on the map. I had never heard of them before Cynic gave them a big break.
Fantastic. Any fan of cynic and textures will like this without question; so much like them, with a little twist. It'll be a great album, I have a good feeling of that.
I'm not much of a jazz person. For the people who are going to say this isn't jazz, yeah I know that. This just sounds alot like jazz with a twist of metal.
the people that won't acknowledge the "jazziness" of this are the blue blood elitist/purist middle class white people that stagnate jazz with their uber squareness. i bet you anything john mclaughlin or chick corea would like this, probably holdsworth too
Lol, I don't know much about jazz so I have no clue who the hell your are even talking about. I have to say, anyone who doesn't admit this has a twist of jazz to it, I'd say is pretty retarded but I am a middle class white person but I don't stagnate jazz with uber squareness. Lol
Jazz/metal fusion is excellent. I've heard some similar projects before, but never as excellently put together as Exivious. They're great musicians with many years of experience, and though they apparently seem to _frequently_ enjoy to use the diminished sound, it fits fantastically. Dim is one of my favourite tonalities, and one of my favourite minor/b5 improv scales.
I've pre-ordered the album a few weeks ago, and I'm hyped.
Spread the word. This is great stuff! It's like Holdsworth/Ron Jarzombek/Cynic/Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects song Missing Time ( obviously Holdsworth influenced ) rolled into one and done beautifully.
