india has started to grow now..how can it decline...i completely diagree with this man...i admit india doesnt have god governance and political environment but what about the people...people can still grow if they want...moist is under control and kashmir is now stable...and not only kashmir the whole india is now stable..Indians are learning from the mistake they made in 90s and early 2000s..but now the communal harmony is preserved....

Something that must be pointed out is that many of the problems which look very big from outside have been always around since we got our independence. Still we are managing to creep ahead, while doing that slowly taking care of these problems too.. what one cannot avoid is education of young indians who are now getting more and more educated to decide the fate of this nation. Also, as inherently indigenous economy nations, we are somewhat protected from external events.

I wont say, i am highly impressed, but what he highlighted is the present day's reality, and that wouldnt last, the issues in Kashmir, East Indian states etc, this is changing fast and as diverse India is, it is bound to take long, take for eg Dalits, the situation of dalits has improved a lot since Independence, i would say they are at least economically better of then Brahmins in the present Indian society

I agree with Mr. Guha. How can we grant the right of franchise to illiterates. 'That' I believe is the root cause of the poor quality of governance(rather, politicians) we have. Illiterates are easier to fool. An illiterate criminal can beat me in elections, not because he is better than me, but because those illiterates can see themselves in him. Plain logic. He puts it really well: "the recklessness of the Indian political experiment".

Lots of points to ponder about... However I guess talking about just the downside without dwelling much into the positive side of things may leave a wrong ( not good or bad) impression on minds of some people ( in this case , maybe some elite of Canada). The good thing about India is that it has lived and thrived, the sad part is that all the people havent been included in the growth cycle. What India needs to do is to develop all spheres of people .

Wrong when he say that Paksitan provokes Hindu fundamentalism. Remember Islam is global issue it is not a pakistan issue. When Al Quida strikes it has glbal reach. They have camps in Pakistan and Paksitan is waging proxy war with India since 1970, over 80,000 Indian have been killed since 1970 due to proxy war.

Now what would Hindus responce would be? Look at the U.S.A, how it responded to 9/11. India does not have bowl to respond. There will be frustration form Hindus.

Do not forget that India is ruled by Nehru-gandhi family for last 60 years. You can not call that a democracy.

India has family based virtual dictatorship, that is far from democracy.

This is a Indian Liberal writer. He just wrote a book call "making of Modern India". Where he choose 19 people. I do not know how he choose 19 people he think that shaped India. He is ignorent and stupid.

He inclused Mohamud Ali Jinnah, who did not contribute to India at all, he is founding fegure of Pakistan. Also leaves out Sardar patel who unified India from Princely rule and united India. He think that writer and intectual shaped by those 19 people, 70% are ilierate then how can shape?

Even now also if we go in rural areas which is majority of the population of india the situation is no better ,even after reservation their status in society is same they can't intermarry even in urban cities.

They can touch each other in urban cities but it is not true in rural india.

No that is totally wrong one of the reason why muslims were so much successful in conquering india was it was already an oppressed society were people fractioned and rivals of each other infact very first invasion by muhammad bin Qasim was welcomed with open arms by the local people.

I tend to think of the days of there being super powers as being a thing of the past. Instead...there will be super blocks of power. What is likely to happen is that the wealth will be more evenly distributed which will either bring peace or war. The only way to bring peace is by sharing the wealth although there's those who will try and stop it. The Jews for example (and good luck to em I must say lol) own a staggering amount of the worlds wealth considering how small their population is.

All these "proud Indians" need to ask themselves if this is all false, why would he be awarded the Padma Bhushan award? Stop being so insecure and learn to take criticism. There are obvious problems with us (yes, Indian. Live in India and have never, ever been outside the country either) becoming more and more powerful.
