@eshoelick I will be posting the how-to for ew-7718un at Matt Hartley Dot Com over the weekend. It's not difficult, but it's not automatic by any stretch either.
I've been trying to make it work with WPA2PSK AES which uses a special ascii chars in the passwords (in windows Alt+combination), but on Ubuntu 9.04 it can't with default drivers, I tried installing serialmonkeys, but no success.
so um, do these things work with the newest version? cuz i have a newer version, but the wireless doesnt work. it wont connect even when the router is on and working fine. the wifi wont work anywhere and im getting screwed over at school because of it :/
does anybody know if i can make the wifi work even without these things? just in case
No problem, glad you are double checking - it's a good thing. :)
You really want the Edimax EW-7318USG exactly - not all Edimax dongles work great, but that one has been running 9.04 on a server of mine for over three months non-stop.
long story short: my laptop got fucked and i didnt have the drivers, so i had to run it with Ubuntu Linux from ground zero. since then ive had to connect it via ethernet cable to have internet, and i cant use it anywhere else, which kills me because i do all my homework at college. also i cant use my printer... i tried, but i cant install it. u got any solutions for that? =/
99% of the made for Windows notebooks run Broadcom garbage for wifi. Most built for Ubuntu run Intel. :)
So it sounds like you are rocking the ever-crappy Broadcom wifi setup, hence it sucking toes.
On the printer front, HP is your friend and Lexmark is junk. Epson is pretty good generally, but not perfect. Which printer model and brand do you own?
I occassionally listen to this video just to know there is a much more viable solution for my Windows designed computer. FOR HP Pavillion 1232-nr and Ubuntu 9.04 AND 8.10 the hardware package Alternate "madwifi" driver for Atheros wireless LAN cards is a piece of SHIT!. I better get around to buying one of these if I hope to do WIFI on Linux, but I'm so fucking frusterated I think I might just hesitate a little longer and shove my ethernet cable up every port I can.
I have been looking for drivers for my USB wireless adaptor , but I could not install them ,,, but I did not realize that I had nothing to do !!!! because , it just worked straight away , after I installed Ubuntu 8,10 !! when I clicked on the top wireless icon , appeared around 20 networks around me ... with windows , it only detects 8 , by the way my USB is : Pluscom ZD 1211 , I am very happy now !!! it works lovely , silly me ,,,certainly , just left click , that is , good luck !!!
This is a really good video. I enjoyed it. if you need more exposure for your videos check out t u b e v i e w s ( d o t m o b i ) Keep up the good videos and continue to make fresh content.
Thanks for a most helpful video. I couldn't get atheros 5007G wifi working on my Asus eee PC 1000HA with Ubuntu 8.10. Ordered the "pricier" Edimax, and voila! Now, few days later, I just played around w/eeebuntu, and guess what: it works fine w/atheros wifi. Keeping Edimax for backup.
Let's start off with what you are needing to do. Now, I am assuming you watched the video and realize that the internal wifi is not likely happening, right? Hence, the reason I am highlighting USB dongles instead?
Now if you are using one of the specific dongles in the video, tried to use them to find that those dongles are not working, then I can help you. I just need to know what wifi device we are speaking of? :)
HP Pavillion 1232-nr. with Ubuntu 8.10. I haven't bought an Edimax for it yet, but it doesn't get a connection in the local wifi cafes. If it does, I don't know how to get it to work.
Good info Matt. I use an Edimax 7318-UG and not working at present after the PC was not used for a few weeks. I noticed the Edimax website posted linux drivers when I bought the card a few months ago then overnight they just posted the code to compile with?
Thanks. With 8.04 - works fantastic out of the box. Ubuntu 8.10, it works, but NM does a little signal dancing up and down, although it will run well assuming you remember to eliminate your router as the acting DNS - helps with the heat issue some, too.
In other words, there is no need to compile the drivers yourself. Less than perfect driver modules perhaps, they do exist already in the current kernel releases.
I tried the device in Windows and same outcome - no networks discovered even though the link LED flashes. I then went to using a BT Voyager 1055 which 'sort of' worked but now get 'rndis connect' messages argh... Any way of restoring wireless drivers to vanilla ubuntu inclucing ndiswrapper?
Nice info! I noticed that in your video you have EW-7(6)08UG and in your info You have EW-7(3)08UG I think the (3) should be in your vid. I've been using Ubuntu since the beginning of Feisty Fawn. I walked away from MS. Big learning curve But never looked back. All 3 pc's run Ubuntu full time wireless and wired. Never had any problems.
Actually with both devices sitting in front of me, the gray dongle is a EW-7318UG (no 6 here) and a EW-7318USG (again, no 6). So I am not sure what you are referring to?
That is awesome that you walked away - did so myself years ago - could not be happier. I even earn my living on these Linux boxes. :)
Sorry, if you look at your video and the box represting the gray usb your numbers in the vid are different than the number you have to the right in your info under your screen name. The gray usb you have a 6 in your set of numbers were in your info under your screen name you have a 3. unless i'm looking at it wrong.
But yes Linux all the way, the kids pc is duel booted with vista for there games, and vista is nothing but problems!!! lol
hey, i've been trying to get my computer wireless for ever. i just doesn't seem to be working, i have to plug it in, so the problem is that i have a cable running though my house, so i would like to just make it wireless. it is a desktop computer, but with all laptop internals. amd 64 athlon x2, and my wireless adaptor came with the computer. it is a RAS Async Adapter. so will getting a new usb adapter be fine, or will it have conflicts with my original?
YES! I got my Edimax device today and after deciphering what kind of WEP key I was using, it works perfectly with Ubuntu. Thank you so much for saving me the trouble of going through Ndiswrapper and other crap.
what are the best laptops to install open source operating systems(Ubuntu 8.04 LTS & BackTrack 3) in terms of compatability(wireless connectivity mostly).
(Dell) for me, so far. I have a inspiron 5100 labtop and 2 dell 9100 desktops thats been running ubuntu since Feisty Fawn was released. I haven't had any problems yet. Asus had problems with one of my installs. no sound.
Uh oh. I think I may have some drivers installed already in my previous efforts to get wireless working. I'm still an Ubuntu noob. Do you know any way of somehow finding out if I do have one installed or removed?
Oh, if you find it is not connecting - remember I had success using WPA2 (WEP is crap, sorry) and I always connect to wireless with my Ethernet cable unplugged.
I agree with you about WEP being crap, but I'm still forced to use it due to my Nintendo products (Wii and DS only use WEP for encryption).
Besides, nobody's trying to hack me in my neighborhood or anything. And if they are, I have some scripting that can flip their images on their browser upside-down.
You were right in using the statement "in theory". The pre-N stuff has ralink drivers available, however they are not provided in the kernel out of the box for Ubuntu users. Well, at least not working. I have been in talks with Edimax in the past, reviewing their stuff, these are the two best devices working out of the box for Ubuntu users.
i just ordred a edimax ew-7718un, and i use ubuntu 10,04. would i just plug it in or would i have to install cd first.
eshoelick 1 year ago
@eshoelick Nope across the board. It's not either of the two adapters listed in my video and the install CD will NOT help.

@vhanla
1) Which of the two SPECIFIC adapters?
2) You lost me with support once you
started messing with the code. It works out of the
box on Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10.
Messing with serialmonkey's code was unneeded
and likely will create problems.
ctsdownloads 1 year ago
@ctsdownloads Edimax EW-7318USG which lsusb shows as 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501USB Wireless Adapter.
It worked well with WEP, but since my ap changed to WPA2PSK AES I couldn't connect.
vhanla 1 year ago
@vhanla
You using network manager? All I do is
connect using WPA2/Personal - works like
a champ with Ubuntu 9.10
ctsdownloads 1 year ago
@ctsdownloads I'm using WICD. With Ralink Legacy, because the others wext, ndiswrapper, etc show -1 dBm on all of them
vhanla 1 year ago
@vhanla
Well, I have found Wicd to work "okay", but
not consistently. Use network manager, DON'T
install stuff from source for Ralink,
problem solved. ;)

Newer version of what? Ubuntu? If you have the exact wifi dongles seen here, yes, they work (and have worked) fine from 7.10 to 9.10 Ubuntu.
ctsdownloads 2 years ago
i meant to say the 9.04 :)
thanx for the info dude, i just wanted to be sure before i went out and bought the Edimax. im still trying to find another solution to my problem =/

Also, you may find that wifi connects to the router okay, but fails to bring up any websites, use this DNS fix using OpenDNS.
$ sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.auto
$ gksudo gedit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
# append the following line to the document
prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220;
# save and exit
Restart the PC.

(-_-")... Lexmark X5495
that would explain it. i cant install it, an i have no other printer... isnt there any way i can install it??
BLOOredd 2 years ago
We have an old Lexmark as well, not in use anymore, but here is what we did before junking it. We set it up for printer sharing on an old XP box.
Using IPP for printer sharing, you can make any printer work on any computer. :)
Lacking the second PC? Consider buying a cheap printer server.

Hmm... ill look into that. thanx for the info. i appreciate it. ^_^

Where can you get the 2 Wifi card at? Can they be availible at Best Buy or another local store?
What About the Wifi Router? Seems that most need a Windows machine to set up. Any for Ubuntu only?
So,what's out there for us Microsoft Widow peeps? (Yes, i spelled it as that on purpose.)
Where canwe get the Ubuntu and linux oriented devices?
Please let us know the easiest way to get these and other Ubuntu devices, along with price ranges.
Thanks
