Despite what youtubians may say, we are a center-right country, and liberalism is in the minority. The GOP's plan, had any democrat chosen to listen, included tort reform to limit frivolous lawsuits and insurance competition across state lines to lower costs. But because those plans would have actually saved money and expanded coverage, making Obama look even worse, they were ignored.

    Check the polling from 2007 to 2009 - you'll find that before (and even after) the republican/industry FUD, there's been a 70%+ support for strong public option (like opt-in-and-pay-for-it Medicare), and 55% support for straight single-payer (abolish private insurance, create Medicare-for-all).

    Either way, the public wants a public plan - that's undeniable. It's just a matter of whether we get the great but moderately popular one, or the nice but overwhelmingly popular one.

I mentioned the highway system and other services which the government provides, and he/she called them state-run. Hardly. All of these were once Federal programs which, once proven successful, were given to states to run individually. Faced with fact, the name-calling begins, as always.

What they are doing is providing a health care plan where you will not be excluded because of pre-existing conditions, will not have an upper limit on legitimate health care expenses, and will not have to fight for coverage of basic care needs.

  • Ten years ago, 95% of money paid to health insurance companies went to health care. Currently, it is down to 85% - the other 10% is being paid to share holders, and used for advertisements and exorbitant executive pay. The public option will force insurance companies to spend more of their money on actual health care in order to be competitive. This is good for all of us. Government isn't running health care, it's simply making deals with private insurers to bring down rates.

    So what does the bill say who sits on these supposed Death Panels? Govt employees? Elected? Appointed? Private doctors? How are people notified of their panel meeting? Mail? Phone? Visit? Is it like jury duty? What if you miss your appointment - are you arrested? What's the punishment for failure to appear? Can you appeal their finding? Please answer by quoting from proposed legislation. Otherwise, not interested. Only verifiable facts count.

    There are mary ways to bring the cost of health care down without the government running it.

    You seem to have a strange, legalistic idea of rights - that something cannot be a right because it isn't on the correct piece of paper at this exact moment in time. Gun ownership and militia maintenance is less practically important today than ever before, but access to healthcare will always be extremely important.

    Doctors wouldn't mind making less profit if we subsidized their educations as many other countries do (meaning they graduate and begin practice with little or no debt).

    Promoting the general welfare means whatever congress wants it to, until the supreme court says "that's ridiculous" or the populace rebels. Simple as that. Don't pretend our system was set in stone in the 1700s.

    Do you believe Medicare is unconstitutional? How about Medicaid and the rest of our social safety net? As is shown in other developed nations, a strong social safety net includes guaranteed healthcare (beyond the US standard of "show up to an ER and we won't kill you").

    There's our main difference - you're approaching this from a dogmatic standpoint. You say more government = bad, less government = good, end of discussion.

    I say more government can be, BUT isn't automatically bad. More government can be great, when it's needed - see the civil rights act for an example (and, in my opinion, our current healthcare situation). I'm not a big fan of authoritarian groups and cultures, which is one of the reasons I dislike the republican party.

    I'm making a couple of assumptions in this, sorry if I'm off. Since you're an American right-libertarian (ie sort of anarcho-capitalist), I'll assume you were raised religious but are now non-religious.

    I'd like to urge you to examine your beliefs, particularly your faith in free markets and capitalism, and consider whether your faith in those is really any more rational than the spiritual faith in the community in which you were raised... whether you simply traded one for another.

    as I get older and pay more taxes I find myself fed up with more and more government programs and higher and higher taxes.

    How come when I don't have the money to buy something I don't buy it.

    But the government has no clue how to budget.

    We need to cut spending and get our budget back down before we can even entertain the idea of universal health care.

  • Government can work to better society, however ever since the conservative resurgence in American politics, it has been steadily broken to serve the wealthy and not the many. And when the many complain that they don't see their tax dollars going to work, the Republicans cite their own misrule as evidence that government cannot work.

    Government can work, and it did after the Great Depression, it just needs to be safe guarded from those who seek to sabotage it, the conservatives and the wealthy.

  • Oh no, it's not the wealth that makes them evil. No no no, there's plenty of good people among the wealthy, I'm sure. The problem I have is when they use that wealth to exert political power to the detriment of everyone.

    And really now, would you consider what the highest paid people in the country do to be 'work'? Exxon Mobil's CEO makes more in one minute than most people do in a month, and quite frankly I don't think there's anything someone could do to deserve that kind of payment.
