@severo9876 I hope that more comp. profs these days are helping young musicians find their own way these days. It used to feel like we were expected to obey a linear law of history. That's why it's great to discover pieces like this, by serious, respected composers, that don't sound at all like the music that was supposed to come from the era in which they were composed.

@severo9876 Yes, i quite like the 8th as well. Although, given the context of our times, I find the Quintet radical as well. By that, I mean if I had presented such a piece to my composition profs in the 90's most of them would not have been pleased...

He did have some tendency to go left when everyone else was going right and vice-versa. But mostly he just went his own way, regardless of others.

Yes indeed. And thanks for your comment about the late works, although he actually wrote fairly radical things pretty well throughout his life. I personally think the 8th sonata, with so many different styles, is among his most powerful works.
