Having seen JP live many times over the years, he remains amused by the good lines, as if he's just written the song and is looking at the notebook, saying to himself: "Now that's a winner, I'm gonna go have a smoke and a beer..." Watch the bassist almost laugh, at about 3:40, after he's harmonized the "raped by a min-or-i-tee" line. That's the type of line that only JP can get away with, without coming off like an a-hole, 'coz it's the attitude of the people in the song, not his own.

Everytime I approach a 4 way stop I smile and sing! So simple ... So much happiness .. John Prine Is timeless !!! I'll co- sign the national treasure nomination!
I love this man and his music. This song was a favorite,on an album I bought 30 yrs ago. It still holds up,and makes me laugh. What more could you want from a song?
The beautiful & marvellous truth is that Jesus Christ died at your place, taking upon Himself what you deserve - the Wrath of God. God hates workers of iniquity(psalm5:5). All who contradict the nature of God will go to hell. Period. End of argument. The message of Jesus in Mark 1:15 is simple: REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL. Be not conformed to this world but be ye changed by the renewing of your mind by reading the Bible[KJV] for a change (Romans12:1-2)
God almighty, I just cant understand why this man is not officially declared a national treasure. John prine is an incredible song writer, singer, story teller and human being. So unselfish he must be to write something like this for us...we really dont know how lucky we are...to have him with us now. Thank you John prine.
Ive posted quite a bit of John Prine, but this is possibly my favourite song of his - something about how he can write such a gem of a song about such a trivial and mundane incident. Genius !
I just realized that I've watched and enjoyed a number of the Prine videos you've uploaded, Laurie. I've subscribed so that I don't lose track of them. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for posting this video. Today I happened to think of this song again which was odd since the last time I heard it was about twenty years ago, coincidentally in exactly the context you describe yourself; around a campfire listening to a friend with a guitar. Couldn't even remember the name but searched the "minority" bit and lo and behold you had uploaded it a month earlier. Great memories. Thanks again!
Hi, Rob! My NZ friend alpheta22 is currently trying to add harmonies to "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" for me. Having never done a collaboration before, neither one of us really knows what the heck we are doing.
It was about 150 degrees (exagerated temp) outside & her air-conditioner wasn't working. She invited us to dinner that night to thank us but we couldn't make it. We had tickets to see John Prine. True story.
A buddy & I were stopped at a light in Denver one evening (waiting for it to turn green). A lady behind us hit her brakes a little late to stop from ramming us (she was trying to manage her young kids in the back seet). After we sat up from jolting foreward we looked at eachother & started singing this song. We walked back to the ladies car to make sure they were all ok. While we waited for an officer to arive we went into the convenience store & brought out slurpees for the lady & her kids.

"more famous than the Grand Canyon" - awesome line! I'd pay $10,000 to drive around listening to John explain all these song inspirations.
