I wouldn't ride a 29" wheel for the same reason that I wouldn't where a thong. Some things are just inherently ugly. Besides a 26" is going to handle better in tight single track. That is just a plain fact. If you just want to ride straight and fast ride a penny farthing.
i have a 29er and a 26er, and each had its own advantages and disadvantages, the 29er is faster but is less maneuverable, which makes it better for less technical trails, where the 26er is easier to maneuver, and better for the technical stuff, thats why 29ers are used for xc and racing, because you can get 3 inches farther per pedal
Wonder how he feels 3 years later? I've spent extensive time on both on the North Shore and still prefer 26. I must admit, 29ers are amazing at not launching you over the bars even running a 4 degree tighter HA on the 29 than on my 26. The new breed of duallies like the RM Altitude 29 and Norco Shinobi might make a huge impact here.
In the same way it is stupid to think the 26" wheel is best because of tradition, it is equally stupid to think the 29" wheel is superior solely because it is new.
I'm also against car air bags, if you get hit you should have to pay the price. I don't care if 29ers are faster, they should make some kind of law against them.
I think when Mr Schwinn from Germany decided the 26" wheel to be the best, we should go with his great knowledge of the bicycle. They knew what they were doing in the 1920's. Forget about all these new fangled ideas and leave well enough alone.
The MBA shootout was good but I don't know if I would call it accurate scientific data. The margins were quite small anyways, almost negligible. Another problem was the sampling size, many more riders would have to be used to get legitimate results. Does this shop not sale 29ers?

Is a 9% bigger wheel really an improvement? Maybe it's just marketing hype and internet folklore.

Yeah Wade, I've heard round wheels offer no advantage over square wheels too..

"Forget about all these new fangled ideas and leave well enough alone. "
If everyone thought like you we would have no HAMMERSCHMIDT. Life is meaning less without the HAMMERSCHMIDT.
Innovation can lead to good and bad things but without it where would we be?

Innovation bought is convenience. That is it. Convenience is lazy, therefore we may be better off without it?

26" was coincidence. He guessed an OK number and it worked. MTB stuck with it because the klunkers they were riding had 26" wheels.
