Jimmy's learned a lot from Danny Gatton in the 20 years Danny's been dead, but Jimmy couldn't carry Danny's jockstrap and he knows it better than anyone. Just search on "Danny Gstton" and you'll see what I mean and what Jimmy knows.
On the other hand, you sounding good these days Jimmy, i ain't hatin'.
Gatton had great technique, maybe the best ever...but his music was all over the place. Really no memorable songs or albums. His best work i think was the early days w/ his "Redneck Jazz" stuff. Thackery knows exactly what he does best...rockin' blues!
I said the same thing about 2 years ago man! I'm not strictly a rock or blues guitarst, my style is about 60% blues 40% rock, and this guy matches that closer than any guitarist I've heard.
I love this dude... but I just can't sit still when I see him.. I gots ta dance!! How these folks just sittin' there shakin' their heads? Makes me wanna shake what my momma gave me!
Hear, hear! The other day riding home from Manhattan on the bus, I had Let the Good Time Roll playing on my mp3- the live version from Nighthawks times 4- and Thackery wails on that, but with as much lyricism and rhythmic suppleness as raw power. He is certainly underrated, downright unknown, in fact, to a many folks who are into rock/blues.
I've seen him many times here in Pittsburgh (for about 15 years) and he never fails to STUN. It's great to take someone who never heard him just for their reactions!
Doesn't soud much like a hot rod... He could be playing that silverface head, (bandmaster, maybe?) back by the drums. The rhythm guitar sounds 'hot roddish', though.
Jimmy gets much of his tone through pedals, those Barden pickups, and his fingers. I've seen him live plaing though many different amps, including Line 6 combo. Ususally, he has two combo's side by side..like his old dual Twin Reverb set-up. Since those HR-series amps are arranged that way, I assume it's what he's playing through (perhaps rented) that night.
Just watched it again...that head/cab is the bassman's rig. Thackery is definitely playing though the two HR-series combos. the second guitarist, briefly seen on the left, has an amp by the Dairy-queen looking lamp.
That other rack/cab combo in the background is likely part of some other bands back-line.
I've met Jim several times. I have two favorite experiences.. The time he and George Thorogood stopped traffic in the middle of M Street in Georgetown (DC) by jamming with wireless guitars, and the time the Nighthawks played with Gregg Allman after he and Cher broke up. Awesome to have been there for both!
I had the pleasure to see Jimmy and Tab Benoit play at Tab's former club in Houma Louisiana......I sat on the corner of the stage and watched them jam all night long.....had the time of my life
He's great and I swear to God I'm standing in the photographer's pit right in front of Jimmy here-just out of frame! yes, another "Het I was at this show!"
i saw jimmy in pacific beach california at blind melons....great guitarist and a nice guy. he was drinking a beer at the bar 10 minutes before trhe show and no one recognized him. unassuming and humble............come on back to san diego sometime jimmy...........
Jimmy makes it looks soooo easy don't he? He comes round Hermosa and plays the Boogaloo Cafe now and then and tickles our ears. Thanks for posting this blueshoes.

I just adore his jazzy feel although it never strays away from the blues. Adore it.

You're right, ROCDR88! And the thing about Jimmy is that he is very humble Met him when he played in Hawaii. Very cool.

Perhaps the most underrated blues guitarist of all time. A true genius of the genre in my humble opinion.

And look what Jimmy is playing THROUGH...your average Fender Hot Rod Deluxes (or are they Deville's) ?
