the drums are live too. you're high. why would they go the trouble of singing, yet faking the drums with someone live off stage? it's rare that's it's actually live, but it is live. bbc4 posts are just that, posts.
Back in the late 1960's my band was the opening act for Dave Clark Five at the Boston Gardens.I am a drummer and Dave was playing his drums that night, and let me add that they where all gentlemen and a definite class act.
The vocal is live ! Look at Daves sticks at :50 to :59 and around 2:06 ! He hits nothing. The live drum hits are off stage by another drummer just like in the Bits and Pieces video
from the next Sullivan show. Check the post from BBC4sounds. There is NO live video
of the DC5 to be seen anywhere ! They did make GREAT records !
Rare Live take. People have to remember this is 1964 and they could not do quality sound on the spot like today. Sounds raw but, that was the beauty of Rock and Roll which is what the Dave Clark 5 was as a band. This aired in March of 1964 one month after the Beatles played on Ed Sullivan. The Dave Clark 5 were already in the USA when the Beatles arrived. Dave Clark didn't know who Sullivan was He turned him down 1 time before they played.
Seems to be all live. At one time I thought this had some pre-recorded sound with live vocals. But as I listen further, it is apparent that it is all live. Pretty full sound for live. So a good job by the group.
The wonderul Dave Clark Five, proving once and for all, beyond any doubt that they could perform live. Puting an end to the myth generated by all the retards who frequent this site, that they were not capable of it.
Retards, bow down to a great talent: two of whom now sadly departed; a great band, and a great English Band- an era sadly never to be repeated. Glad I was around to have witnessed the event, if only as a small boy with fond and nostalgic memories.
In fact watch that clip at around 56-60 .. his left hand, which is supposed to be playing 8th notes on the high hat is playing "ghost notes" in the air .. his right hand is striking the rim of the snare and that is quite audible ...
Ok .. this controversy as to whether ot not Dave Clark actually had the "TALENT to play drums has been around for as long as I've been playing drums .. since around 1967. I was always a fan of the DC5 but it doesn't take a genius to look at this video to see that that ONLY times those drums are being hit is the three quarter notes between "Im a feeling" bam bam bam "glad all over" and even as something as simple as that "live" fill is, the timing is horrendous.
In the Recording Studio theDC5used to put Earthenware Jars in front of the BassDrum to get the deep"Boom! Boom!"soundObviously they couldn't do that for their Live and TV appearancesSo maybe the Drum(S) are "Boom! Synched"?Interestingly though Elkan AllanThe producer of Ready Steady Go! (the TV Show from which the DC5 clip of Bits & Pieces is taken)Banned all the acts appearing on that show from using prerecorded materialSo they had to play "live" I'm not sure in which year that happened though
If you listen carefully, you can tell they are really playing because the acoustics for the drums are so much louder than the other instruments. Back then they couldn't synchronize all of the amplifications and sometimes some of the instruments couldn't even be heard. Thank goodness these guys had talent. Around 1:00 and 1:56 you can see the two that are harmonizing are practically yelling and you can hear a separation in vocals. Some shows did use pre-ecorded music, but not in this case.
@gabriellaEB100 Maybe so......but what about the solid instrumentation sound that comes thru, with the sax and organ? Are those live? Mike never seems to take notice of the keys. Most keyboard players do look at the keys at some time.
I saw the Dave Clark 5 in Fort Wayne In. in 1965. They played all there instruments live. It was like going to a Beatles concert. I meet some of them backstage. An usher took me backstage. I was about 9 years old. What a night.
This is a very good band and the music will live on.
I think Dave was drumming and Lenny was definitely playing live with a low backing track behind.Denis MAY have been playing off mic as well..but the boys were definitely singing live..hahah that mic for Mike and Lenny was about 6 ft from either one!
Dave is playing live. During the verses he's hitting the rim of the snare with his left hand and kind of 'air drumming' with his right. On the choruses, he's playing the toms on the 1st and 2nd beats and the cymbal / bass drum on beat 3.
Hard to tell, but Lenny Davidson (guitar) seems to be playing live, as well.
In fact, they're probably singing live, too. Those 2 mics were omni-directional and sensitive - which is probably why DC wasn't smacking the snare drum full out.
This is the famous Ed Sullivan appearance which took place just after the Beatles had their appearances on Sullivan. Note the need for the band to do at least a portion of the performance live, as the Beatles had performed live. Still, much of this was pre-recorded, with the band lip-syncing and mimicing their instruments, a precurser to how future TV performance of rock groups would be done in the 1960's.
During those days all the groups seemed to be so good. Remember, all we had to watch then was American Bandstand, and they only played the top 10 songs. Life was truly good back then. Except for Vietnam.
I'm no expert. But I think Dave did a great job! When The DC5 were inducted to the Hall Of Fame in 2008, he came straight out and said he was not the best drummer. I sure he wasn't the worst either.
After watching this video, it's not hard to understand why Dave Clark hated performing live on TV!...His drumming is really below average, and often hits the metal rim around his side drum!
John Lennon and Ginger Baker both said that he was the worst rock drummer in England!. I have always loved the DC5's music, and Mike Smith had one of the best voices in Rock Music during the 60's!. If only the band could have had another drummer and Bass Player!....Dave Clark's talents were only in business!
Genuine performance by a bona fide band of musicians, that no piss-poor American band like 'The Monkees' (piece of shit manufactured) could hold a candle to- no yank could ever understand a sixties beat group and how the sound was created- you don't have the intellect. So don't even bother making any more INANE comments.
Big fan of The DC5 and this is the 1st time I've seen/heard a semi-live performance of any of their songs. This is very rare! How or where did you come of the footage? And, PLEASE don't remove it from you uploads either, haha. x
@webwillie1 That's right, watch Dave from 2:07 to 2:15 as he hits his wrists on his legs. watch him at 1:47 with his sticks pointing up just like he did in "live" concerts !
My understanding of this debut show on Sullivan, was that the drums were live, which is obvious. The live drums sound nothing like the recorded drums. There was a backing track that they all sang along to.............so it was part backing track and part live.
Bobby Graham played drums on all of the US hits, and Eric Ford played the bass on all of the DC5's EMI recordings. This is the only live DC5 video known to exist.
Not completely live. There is a backing track playing beneath. You can really tell by watching and listening to DC when he hits the crash. It hardly moves but yet we hear a prominent sound. Nice try Dave!
@gretschviking I disagree. This sounds like a 100% live recording. There are a couple of unwanted rim shots (mistakes) on this track. Why would Clark use a backing track that was not only flawed but didn't sound a thing like the record? My friend saw them live twice and reported that they COULD indeed play their songs.
I had a friend who saw them twice and he said they were the real deal. This video is them playing live so they sound capable. They were voted the best live band on their touring circuit. BTW, also they didn't do any more live shows, Clark often had live mics on Mike, Lenny, and himself.
It would have been difficult to replicate their studio sound, as it was a solid wall of sound, long before Phil Spector came up with the idea.
A great singles band, but they could never match the Beatles for talent or songwriting!
After their first Ed Sullivan appearance, and playing live on Sunday Night at London Palladium, Dave would never allow the band to play live on TV again.
It was a good move.
It makes me wonder, if they really played live during their tours?
@CANARVONKID Yes. Unlike the Beatles who's first album was like a live recording, the DC5's engineer used many studio tricks to enhance the sound. Mike Smith's vocals were overdubbed. Dave's drums were tightened up and the cymbals were recorded and then added in reverse to give them more drive. But it is great to hear them live for once.
@gretschviking To me, one of the saddest things about the music of the DC5 was not allowing Mike Smith to use his piano talents on their records. Mike was probably the best pianists during the British Invasion but never played anything beyond basic R&R. Mike was classically trained and could play the classics with ease.
@gretschviking I don't doubt Clark used studio drummers on their later records (meaning everything after their debut album). But I believe Clark did play on their debut album. My reasoning is this... 1) Ron Ryan, who was there, said he played. 2) Since he produced his records himself he probably couldn't afford to pay a top-of-the-line studio drummer. 3) I've heard about 2-3 more drummers who claimed they were "Dave Clark".
There is a poor quality bootleg of one of their live shows from 1965 and it proves that the DC5 were a decent live band. Not great but adequate. Why DC chose to take the easy way out and lip-synch over everything on TV is beyond me. Then again, nobody understands his way of thinking........control freak that he is.
@gretschviking He was a control freak. My guesses about the lip syncing are 1) This video, his drums sounded bad and 2) They used so many recording "tricks" that they really couldn't reproduce their "sound". To Clark's credit, he OFTEN had open mics on Mike, Lenny, and himself and they sang along with the backing track.
@gretschviking This is from the Ed Sullivan Show 3/8/64 and

Cheesy harmonies and dance routine more reminiscent of pre-1962 Shadows/Freddie and the Dreamers Vaudeville and that awful, awful drumming over the top of everything (and twice as loud as it should be) The DCF truly were pretty goddam awful and are rightly forgotten about by all except Mr Clarke himself!
It sounds like they wanted to keep the screams in so the live sound of the drums and vocals slipped in. You can hear Dave Clark hit the side of his snare drum... not bad but no cigar. :)
@rocksinger45, this is a 100% life performance of the DC5, not a tape. Mike's vocals are not overdubbed like they were on the record. This also made the backing vocals sound totally different.
On this date in 1964 {Feb. 15th} "Glad All Over" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it would peak at #6 and spent 14 weeks in the Top 100
Ranked No. 24 on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1964 chart
This was the group's debut on the U.S. charts; they had 24 records make the Top 100, 8 make the Top 10, and one No. 1 {"Over and Over"}
Reached #1 on the U.K. Singles chart, #1 in Ireland, #3 in Australia, #2 in Canada, and #4 in the Netherlands...
