It's too bad Blue Box was abandoned for Classic. It would have been far simpler to implement the classic APIs on top of Mach instead of running a copy of Mac OS in a sandbox. Then each classic application could run in it's own address space with memory protection and multitasking like DOS apps under OS/2.
Classic was the direct successor to the Blue Box. Blue box was, from the start, a virtualized box of Mac OS even in Rhapsody... see any article on the internet! Reimplementation of (parts of) classic API on top of Mach is what's called Carbon.
