  • ci sono altri video che riguardano questo campionato del mondo 1985??

  • Classic example of the value of hard work, and having teammates in the break. Pronounce it 'Yope Zootemelk'.

  • They didn't mean it in a bad way i think... they said stealing because many people thought he is too old and he "stole" it from the big favourites Lemond and Argentin.

  • Long Live Joep Zotemelk!

  • I srsly cant see how you people can even cal this a stolen win from joop..

He personally took down the attackers, then he Solo attacked 2 km for the finish and nailed it.

Joop is one of the best cyclers ever.

  • nice vid..

  • do u guys think these guys could beat lance armstrong?

  • Back then, pros raced heaps more than now, guys like Kelly rode everything. Plus the Tour had split stages and other fun stuff. There wasn't the same specialisation than now, rider's programs revolve around the Tour now, whereas the Giro and the Vuelta were on equal footing. Team tactics and star riders all decide races, plus teams rode totally for the likes of Moser, Hinault and Roche. Could lance beat them, maybe.. Hinault would be my pick to beat Armstrong, and of course Merckx.

  • The specialisation really began with Greg Lemond, who focussed on the tour (and the world championship) because that's all the americans knew. Then people like Moreno Argentin followed and now most riders but not all. Valverde rode the whole season this year. Philippe Gilbert who just won the giro di Lombardia rode the whole season.

By the way the giro and vuelta were more important back then but never as inportant than the tour.

  • Hi, yes, I agree with you regarding Greg and his attention to the Tour. And I guess Valverde did do a lot of races this year, as did Gilbert, and what a way to round off his season, a great win indeed. I think what has to be remembered is that until Lemond, Hinault and Phinney came along and lifted the profile of American cycling, american sport, in my eyes, revolved around the trinity of baseball, grid iron and basketball. Cycling was seen as esoteric and perhaps a touch less masculine.

  • "Stolen2 i think in that no one expected him to win and he got away from the group when everyone was watching Lemond.

  • Zoetemelk. one of the Greates of all time he Raced The Best of the Best Eddy Merckx, and Bernard Hinult., Frome 1970 to 1980 in the tour of France and gave them a hard time 1980 Tour has his NAme.

  • Why is this fucking commentator saying that Joop stole the world title?

If there is one goddamn cyclist who deserved to win the World Title, its him! Joop!

  • i agree with you. he just won big time, great move. he deserved it. no stealing here.

  • Oh yeah, the Dutch had the numbers in the break, they could sit on whomever tried to jump away, but the move by Joop was superb. He was a terrific rider and a great bloke by all accounts. The Yanks commenting were probably grid iron or basketball commentators that got roped into doing the broadcast. Back then, cyclists were like aliens to the Yanks, or poofs for shaving their legs...... they only said stolen because LeMond didn't win, he was cooked anyways by the look of him.....

  • yep, i watched it live. i remember very well that finish.

Eddy Merckx was assisting the Belgian commentator (I'm Belgian) and he, himself was in awe.

  • You were very lucky to see such a terrific race! I have seen stages of le Tour several times but never the intensity and prestige of a race like the World's.. Joop was a extremely classy rider with a long and beautiful career. And to live in such a cycling mad country as Belgium and all the wonderful races, amazing!

One day I would like to be standing on the top of the Bosberg seeing the final selection go by.. one day!!

  • I live in the states, now, so i'm far from it all. but i can follow most big races live streaming on the internet or cable tv. I much prefer a classic than a tour. during a grand tour, things happen on just a few stages, most stages are boring. a one day race is rarely boring.

you are right, before the early 80's most americans did not consider cycling as a sport. hinault went to america to race in the tour dupond and said he loved the american spirit and energy.

  • I just missed seeing La Vie Claire w/ Hinault in Sacramento for the Coors Classic tour (I think) they did a split stage and rode a kermesse in old Sacramento town. Couldn't get a park anywhere, so missed out. I think that was the only race he did? Don't know if he did Dupont.. I know there was a "Ride with Hinault" day in L.A. He sat in a car and watched everyone trying to hang off his back bumper, had a mate of mine there near the front. Hinault was laughing his head off!

  • you are right. of course it is not the tour dupond but the coors classic. my mistake.

  • The first american to take part in the tour was Jonathan Boyer, i think. in 81 or 82.

check out the 1982 world championship in Goodwood, won by Sarroni and you will see Boyer falling 500 metres short of winning the title (it's on youtube)

  • Sure you're right there, will check out the Goodwood videos. Jock Boyer was another great rider, largely ignored in America, but had a lot of respect in Europe. Good for him!

I also agree that the classics are far more dramatic than stage races, the intensity, tactics. Belge is so lucky to have the best one day races! Sure, there is Milan San Remo, a beautiful race, but until the race calendar goes north, the true racing doesn't start until the Ronde!

  • I know. He totally chased down Boyer. Totally outrageous.

  • @kvmusic i dont think they meant he stole it like it was unfair. I think they just meant the favorites like Lemond probably felt like they could've won and he stole that from them

  • He used the word stolen because it is an American broadcast and Greg Le Mond was in the field .

  • best what i ever see from a dutch fan

  • Joop! The first World Championships for me as a racing publication-buying (Winning magazine) member of the global cycling community.

Back when Roche was still 'Roach' to American audiences...

  • Joop- a true stud in every way! Viva Joop!

  • good old joop the best!!!!!!!

  • Ah, a classic. Great, great win by old Joop...and it caused a bit of controversy here in Denmark, too. Greg Lemond and Dane Kim Andersen were teammates on La Vie Claire, and Andersen was sorta supposed to look after Lemond a little bit. But when Joop Zoetemelk went, Kim Andersen couldn't bear to chase down his old team captain from the COOP team, and afterwards claimed that he had "bonked" at the crucial moment. You'll notice how Andersen had the front just at the moment when Zoetemelk attacked.

  • socialrider909, you are the man. Terrific videos from your hand, this one included naturally.

Brilliant move from old Joop on this one. Remember seeing it live, I thought for sure Argentin would take this.

  • what a beautiful video.. that was really a superior move by Zoetemelk, he chose the time of his attack perfectly and he showed everybody how important it is to have a team with you.

  • Joopieeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

  • Kewlios

  • Goosebumps all over again, great sports!

  • Very, very beautifull!!!

  • Thanks for putting this up. Great look back in the day before most guys were doped to the gills. (Though the sport is trying to clean itself up).

  • Excuse me? Did you say before most guys were doped to the gills. Read "A Rough Ride" by Paul Kimmage. Remember a guy named Tom Simpson on Mont Ventoux, he had enough uppers in his jersey pocket to start a pharmacy. Doping or not, anyone who can withstand the torture of a Grand Tour, or finish Paris Roubaix on a cold, rainy day is a certified stud!!

  • joep zotemelk!!!

  • Too bad that the American commentators don't know anything about cycling. Joop rules! My hero. Thank you for posting this. Heeft iemand het filmpje met Nederlands commentaar van Mart Smeets?

  • I believe Smeets was shouting 103! 103! I saw this with the Smeets comment once (not on YT), I believe Zoetemelk's got even got a necklace with 103 on it.

  • JOOP!!!

  • a very canny rider!,was he allowed to defend his title?,i know uci were not keen to have riders of 40 years of age in worlds championship's!.

  • Crazy Yank commentators... THis not steeling but clever riding!

  • Gave me shivers again to see this back. A lot of people in Holland could´nt keep there eyes dry.

The comment is a bit rediculous, he did´nt steel the title he was just clever and even at that age one of the best cyclist around.

  • thank you very much

    for sharing this with us!

  • Long live Greg Lemond!!!!what a pilot!! Undisputably the best Worlds rider the US has ever produced!! Viva Lemond!!

  • Poisongypsy, by the time of this victory (the last major one of his career), Joop had won the Tour de France, the Vuelta de Espana, the Dutch National Championships (twice), and just about every Spring classic. He was a tough old man, though, I'll give you that.

  • Tough as a old boot! Pure class on a bike, and a gentleman off it, I've been told. Humble guy, pity he wasn't allowed to ride after 40...

  • Great to see the old man take a win for a change!
