  • mezmereyezing !

  • R.I.P John Martyn

  • Simon Cowell would shit his little tits off if he saw this video. Shame he's blind.

  • @Fennzander amen

  • Do you think he was better than Amy Winehouse ?

  • @mrbillhicks yes, for one he lived longer and thus did more material but never got the fame nor cash of amy

and bill hicks was histories best ever comedian

  • @panzermort

Never got the fame nor the cash but we got to share the magic that was John Martyn....

  • brilliant song from John Martyn, inventive, great music

  • Me I adore and respect him! JOHN!

  • Well said `Yakacm` John is for those who choose to seek him out

  • I bet there are a few goose bumps and slack jaws in that audience........genius

  • Pure pure talent...fucking king of a man Martyn.....your world...thanks for letting me in....

  • Modal? Did you mean that?

  • just amazing

  • john martyn is one of the most inventive and creative musicians i listen to one of my favorites , when hes sober , my dad saw him live in the 80s told me he was drunk on stage and just sounded like noise , sobriety + john martyn = Win

  • John is the best thing on youtube...Rest in Peace John ..Big TY for your heartfelt songs and music

  • I saw him open for Yes back in the 70s playing solo like this with nothing more than an Echoplex, a volume pedal and a fender amp. It was a perfect warmup for a Yes who were in their prime. The experience of seeing one man create such a fullness of sound and fine music has stayed with me to this day. I'm glad this is here so people can see what it was like. Thanks for the post.

  • @Steevlan1 Saw the same billing at MSG in 1973 I was all of 13 yrs old .Blown away by JM and the echoplex That was it onstage just him and 4 House spotlights shining on him. Someone threw a frisbee up thru the spot beams in the middle of this song and he saw it and said "Wooooow" all the while playing with out missing a beat.

    Long Live John Martyn !

  • check out the rapt audience. Too stunned to clap at the end.

  • This...is.....modal.......

  • Superb!! I saw him in Glasgow in '77 at the Pavillion and this was the version of Dealer that he played that night. Never thought I would see it again - nice upload!!

  • The BEST song about drug addition/dealing ever written, with a huge amount of depth behind the literal meaning of the lyrics.

  • Absolutely gives me the shivers! Perfect. Like watching Thom Yorke play the clock.

  • Similar to many, i just caught this on the Guitar Heroes song and both myself and my partner sat mesmerised for the duration. There's something undefinably perfect about this song.

  • just love it

  • heard this song 1st time bout 2months ago. Am totally blown away, just completly love it. play it all the time via you tube, nobody else in my aquaintance has heard of him , such a shame

  • something about this guy! i love it! just recorded guitar heros on sky plus again, see this on there for the first time last year.. aparently his parents wer opra singers?? not herd of him b4, v.cool xx

  • @MARYANNE269 Hahaha.. yeah i just finished watching it on sky plus aswel mate, aint that weird? Im usualy into loud and nasty drum n bass but i had to put 3 of the songs from that programme onto my favourites list.

  • i love how he uses the echo flex so well. He get the spiting edge on everthing R.I.P mate i told u to cut down on those spirits :'(

  • BTW its at 105bpm and I bet that's an Electro Harmonix Memory Man.

  • I've got it on C F# C# F# G# C# which seems to work.

He's probably dropped the tuning a bit more to save his voice it also helps with those bent notes as the strings are quite loose.

  • this is that good shit. he is so talented. God bless

  • Id never heard of this bloke before, seen him on GH at the BBC now im hooked, what a great talent and sadly no longer with us, this song is completely and utterly absorbing

  • @gray3287 Snap, exactly the same so mesmerizing.

  • iv only jus discoverd john martyn through following the episodes of guitar heroes on the bbc. i think he has a very unique style of his own. i plan to research and purchase a nuymber of his albums to listen to more of his work.

  • duck tape for the win

  • this man was ahead of his time enough said

  • Still is

  • @lithium91 yeah man lol good stuff

  • JM rocked period!!

  • One word to sum up John Martyn. Fucking genius. OK, two words then.

  • One of my favourite live numbers of his...fucking brilliantly played & what a vocalist...RIP John.

  • Genius.

I caught the 78 tour in Plymouth - seemed like everybody went backstage after the show.

  • Someone knows what tunning is he using for this song?? Thanks

  • Standard EDGABE buts its with an echoplex so unless you have one it wont sound anything like it ;)

  • Thats not standard mate

  • @django1889 i no wrond song sorry, its actually DAFGCE

  • so much better and more atmospheric than the recording.

  • Best version I've ever heard! Pure ecstasy.

  • LET ME IN! LET ME IN!

    love it ;)

  • LET ME IN LET ME IN SWEEET DARLIN!

  • Great song, great cover, great artist. LONG LIVE JOHN MARTYN!

  • Superb! I prefer this version. The sounds are just out of this world.

  • AHHH,the original Handyman's Helper,Ductape !

  • Any info on where to find entire footage of this broadcast ????

  • Remember going CRAZY!! looking for a blank cassette when this was on the tv & radio. Fantastic to see this again after 32 years. Great posting

  • This is basically the best thing on Youtube.

  • I'll drink to that!

  • @AndPlus mine's a large one

  • @unicron2002

    Can't disagree.

  • HIS OWN MAGIC THATS WHY HES UNIQUIE

  • Anyone have any idea what tuning he is in and what chord he's playing? I can't find any TAB anywhere!

Love you john. I just wish more people could share your music.

  • Tuning is CFCCGD. Try the official JM website (under "articles") for some info on the chords.

  • @Waggonerslad I don't think he is tuned to CFCCGD here. From what I can make out, he's tuned to AGDGAD, though tuning the A string to G could well be wrong. But to play the chords the way he's playing, the other tunings are about right.

  • @EddieG1888 I think his tunings are well known and have been talked about so much there are forums filled

    try johnmartynDOTcom/?location=/web/Guitar%20Scores

  • @panzermort That's fair enough, but I play guitar and I know from what he's playing and the fingering more or what that tuning is. Try it and see what you think.

  • if you find anything, PLEASE message me lol

    ill do the same lol

  • @DeadWhiteButterflies Can I just ask why do you wish more ppl could share his music, the vast majority of ppl like to be spoon fed processed crap, John and the 000's of other talent musicians are there for people like you and me who can be bothered looking for it. John always made a living I am quite glad he never made it massive Every one of the 20 + time I saw him live was packed out, whether it was a big theatre of a little pub gig. I hope I don't sound as thou I am having a go cuz I'm not.

  • The HQ button makes the recording sound worse!

  • absolute ledgend.r.i.p john martyn

  • I wonder what tuning this is played in. SO much better than the studio version. Amazing.

  • i,ve seen john on many occasions - Glasgow Green - supporting wet wet wet !!!- blew the fuckers off the stage !!

  • Who booked that?! Haha!

  • Is he playing with a backing track or are all these sounds coming from a guitar synthesizer?

  • Its just John, his guitar and an echoplex... nothing else.

  • He used a pedal/fx unit called an echoplex to loop what he's playing so he can play over the top of it, he does it masterfully. Shame the recording is so bad.

  • I got the feeling there is a phaser mixed in with the Echoplex to create that vocal swirling sound. Such a great track! I'm hooked on it. gonna have to find this as an mp3 as it's my favorite version. the Live 1986 band version is good too but the cheesy 80s latin Jazz fusion break just annoys me because the groove is so tough it doesn't need fluffing. John Martyn, genius.

  • is it just me or is there a polepiece missing from that pickup?

  • i was back stage at a john martin gig and its true what people say about his attitude, but what a talent he was...R.I.P

  • i've been arguing with a friend about how this guy is a billion times more inventive and better than herman li. i'm winning.

  • @synestheticmusic I should hope so m8 :)

  • traditional rock n roll song!

love it, gaffer tape, guitar, genius

  • some people are crazy about him some people cant stand his face

  • class record. i absolutely love it

  • RIP

    so Sad :( :( ;(

    Love Patte

  • Fave John Martyn track. RIP John, bet this guy's raising a little hell in heaven right now.

  • x x x x x x x x peace and love

  • This guy continues to amaze me, RIP John

  • RIP John Martyn, you'll never be forgotten.

  • john this song set me off into effects years ago RIP self transient brother

  • The biggest difference between music of now to this is that THIS grabs you by the heart and lets you in.

Modern music thumps you around the head demanding attention.

Love you John you will be missed missed missed.......

I am drinking wine at 1am watching as much as I can see on you tube. Bless your Heart.

    n

  • You are spot on with your comment. Where has the feeling gone?

  • computers ate it all

  • I put on a gig with John in Norwich in the eighties, in St Andrews Hall, incredible acoustics, if only someone had recorded that one... I was too lost in his music to think about it at the time. Lovely man, took time to chat with all the loyal fans who'd trekked from all over the UK for that one gig. Yet I only advertised it in Norwich.

  • RIP john, i didnt really know who he was b4 guitar heroes on the bbc , and he was great.

  • You touched a lot of lives john, I hope your rest is in paradise. Sadly missed......

  • RIP John Martyn

Did you know that Billy Powell, the last surviving member of lynyrd skynyrd died today as well :(

  • RIP!

  • Great talent gone. Cheers for The Dealer John. Legend.

  • R.I.P John Martyn

  • He died this morning.

  • I gotta try to put this in context. John got the first half of a one-hour show. "Dealer" was the last song he did. He was shuffled off to make way for the band "Racing Cars". They were never heard from again. John blew the first half on a performance of "Outside In", then "Spencer the Rover" and "Dealer". Probably the best performances he's ever done. I would like to know where I can get a copy of this video.

  • me to .. just discovered this man.. what a tune .. cool 10

  • Hi Guys, you can download this version from Play. com, obviously type in John Martyn then " live Hippodrome 1977 " in the download section, it downloads straight to itunes, ive done it and im lovin every minute of it!

  • Another one here watching this after catching 'Guitar Heroes' the other day, it's a small world etc...

  • Yeah- i googled him the other night, its a real shame- he got an OBE this year too from the queen, i hope that kinda cheers him up. Im just happy i was sober enough to press record on sky + to keep on watching it when there is nothing on telly! I still cant get this tune outta my head- its top

  • I heard this on Guitar Heroes the other night too, it's haunted me ever since.

  • has anybody seen john martyn now ? 2 words , HOLY SHIT

  • Saw this last night on BBC4 Guitar Heroes show. This guy was 30 years ahead of his time. Fucking AMAZING. What on earth has happened to popular music in the meantime?

  • Holy shit- i seen last night too after a few beers on guitar heroes! It blew me away along with obviously santana and Dire, the guitar on this sounds amazing, your right about popular music- it aint a patch on stuff like this.

  • If you liked this try "I'd Rather Be the Devil. It will destroy you.

  • @abssom09 you were quite right my friend, i must have listened to Devil 50 times at least, looking at my Gibson and Korg ax1500g, wondering whether I could ever pull it off....

  • WOW.... This is one of those rare tunes that you get sucked into and listen to for days.

Pity the studio version on his One World album isn't as cool as this.

  • i completely agree i mustA LISTENED to this at least 12 times today

  • Likewise. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. Great chords and progressions in the form of some amazing, innovative sounds. Very atmospheric!

  • what a sound

    love it

    rock and roll

  • This is like nothing I've ever heard but I love this so much!

  • yep guitar heroes(lol)i'm glad they did show this,1977 this is way ahead of its time,it should be re-released,or put on some trippy acid jazz album

  • Thats an awesome guitar sound. Brilliant.

  • Yep...we certainly did have the same experience! What a totally trippy tune, way ahead of his time and completely genius and I'm ashamed I've not heard it before. . . it's not like we hadn't heard of him before is it?!

  • You guys have said it all. We must all have had te same experience! Say it on guitar heroes, Had to watch it twice. Woke up next morening and had to listen again - and here i am now. What an amazing guy. 1977! Jesus.

  • Snap, awesome sound.

  • maybe somebody should let him in. :D

  • Like a number of people i heard this on the BBC4 Guitar Heroes program .... and fell instantly in love with this song .... the man is a genius and so ahead of his time ... this song stands, and sounds current even today ... and it was recorded in 1977 !!! Amazing, fantastic and an all-time classic !!!

  • ive been watching the Guitar Heroes programs on BBC4 + i heard this + fell in love with it about 5 seconds into the song! absolutely amazin!

  • It is, but if you haven't seen it try searching for his OGWT performance of "I'd rather be the devil". It's even better

  • Me Too; Brill Bobs.

    sdn563

  • oh my god the exact same thing happned too me, this is the most butifal song ive herd

  • That's where I heard it too! It's just pure awesomeness!

  • @lelelvsn The exact same thing happened to me...truly brilliant

  • @lelelvsn Me too - it was a bit of a discovery. He seemed to not hit my radar in the 70s when a lot of my friends were into him.

  • This is possibly one of the best songs I've ever heard.

  • this is a fucking tune

  • john martyn is a true original.

  • very very lovely

  • Thanks once again Waggonerslad ;).
