This song about a man, who in the name of desperation turns to the devil. He goes into a dark forest or garden with a pond in the middle and find a black rose, symbolizing the devil. It is a cold, dark place, and they speak only through thoughts. He becomes one of the devils many slaves and he rests in they fields of eternity, his soul in immortality.
This song is probably about a man who loses his beloved and commits suicide, then finds himself in hell, because he can't go to heaven. There's a lot more about this song, maybe he communicates with Satan before or after going to hell, but he waits for the day when she'll "walk the shadows with him", or go to hell too, the only way to meet him. Kinda selfish, eh? That's love.
I remember seeing them in my town like 5 years ago, someone in the crowd yelled them to play this song, they started it and after 3 or 4 minutes, Mickael stopped playing and said fuck this I can't remember the rest of this song !
@texasproof My friend, you do not connect to Opeth as the rest of us do, the passion and emotions conveyed in this song is beyond words, and obviously beyond your thought process...
@mttnbstr2 Why because he has a different opinion? No real reason to bash what he said, this is not my favourite song either, Nectar is better in my opinion. People are gonna have different opinions.
MrMoustacheMM from wikipedia should suck dicks till he chokes to death... seriously trying to fuckin DENY that this is a fretless bass.... JUST LISTEN TO IT OH MY GOD
As much as I love opeth, and especially the Morningrise album.. I have to think this song is highly over rated and doesn't really build up to anything special compared to the other songs, in fact it just sounds like instead of making the album 6 songs long, they stuck 2 of them together and made one 20 minutes instead of 10 minutes...
@texasproof i agree with you :)) 20 minutes is too much for a song, i mean there are too many parts... in clasical music there are long songs, but there are so long because there have 3-4 distinct parts
@texasproof They have in a sense joined 3 songs together. It is an intentional choice because they want to convey a certain message. Black Rose Immortal is in a sense a story, and to make it 2 or 3 songs instead of one doesn't tell the story in the same way. Because of this structure they couldn't build up as they did in previous shorter songs, but there's no denying that the ending is one of the heaviest sounds out there. And that is what this entire song builds up to.
i've been following opeth since 1998, and to this day, i think morningrise is best album they've ever done and black rose immortal one of the best songs ever recorded. \m/
@dim0nich you can pick a favorite??? its impossible for me lol, theyre all perfection. id say its a toss up between orchid and morningrise........but also blackwater park.....and ghost reveries......and watershed...
Rather odd that I am a new Opeth fan and I am liking this album more than any of their others. Isn't this supposed to be one of the most inaccessible albums ever made?

@purplewalnut89 It is an awesome scream I had to replay it in my car today lol. It's like the icing on the cake or the cherry on top or the final nail in the coffin or something.
@BOOLsheet are we listening to the same band? did you miss the beautiful acoustic passage at 9:15? The outro? Opeth isn't the band that tries to be different - they do what they like. I also wouldn't call the riffs "random". Despite how overused and improperly that word is used, the riffs in this song fit right in as they tie in with the feel of the song, and are not "random". The part from 17:25 until the end is the best part for me. It really builds to a worthy ending of the song. I've noticed that the outros of Opeth songs often have this quality to them. The outros seem to be the best parts of their songs.
@Paulnl1 Maybe not "the best" but that's right: think Heir Apparent, Deliverance, Master's Apprentice, A Fair Judgment, Dirge for November - some of the best outros in metal ever, no exaggeration.
Hate to say this, but this along with the rest of the first two albums is just sub-par, dragging, boring melodic death metal. It's 20 minutes long for the sake of being so: there's no reason this couldn't have been divided into several pieces. Even Mikael says he dislikes the style of the first two albums; thank God, because he finally started writing some interesting, cohesive material starting from My Arms, Your Hearse.
Sorry Opethbros... this is just boring. Can't wait for Heritage though.
@21stCSchizoidName boring????these riffs are one by one masterpieces and this song is just 20 minutes of awsomeness. Not a single weak part in these 20 minutes. If you tell me you don't enjoy these riffs either I won't believe you or I will think you don't have a good taste of music. Listening to this music just gets you stoned..
@21stCSchizoidName What you meant to say was that Orchid and Morningrise are raw, creative albums, and starting with My Arms, Your Hearse Mikael Akerfeldt hit upon a commercializable prog-metal formula he has since beaten into the ground. The only album that really compares to the first two is "Deliverance," which was so incredibly brutal compared to the other albums that it actually stood out.
@21stCSchizoidName agreed. when they use too many of their death metal influence in their pieces, it drags. ghost of perdition, for example, uses the right amount of each of their influences and remains interesting throughout.
@21stCSchizoidName Still, it needs to be said that their first two albums have that raw energy and hunger to strive for better that's in their later releases. Not saying that's a bad thing, but I can see the merits of each album. Plus, it's arguably their most atmospheric albums of their whole catalogue (akin to black metal albums), next to My Arms, Your Hearse. Plus, no offense to Mendez, but the first three feature some of the best bass work.
what a great band! good musicians, poetry, you feel by listening, they love what they do, pretty rare thing to find in our present time. 15,20 min a track? how many groups get this? no, OPETH is really above most .i agree, last albuns lost some in inspiration, growls were put aside, but still remains a great ammount to enjoy. at least, they're trying, experiencing, i don't believe in a Opeth reduced by market influences
@MikeLamb24 this is nothing like slipknot, opeth is not meant to be 'br00tal' -.- anyway there are no numbers in the word brutal, thats common sense.
also slipknot is not death metal so don't call it that its offensive to all good death metal when you do. just try listen to the song for what it is :)
@loblit05 I thought this was a Slipknot rip off. Then I saw this came out before Slipknot. This has good drums I guess (No Joey Jordison), but it just is not as br00tal as Slipknot. Its not bad don't get me wrong. Slipknot is just too powerful for other death metal bands
@MikeLamb24 well, this is not that brutal. its a mournful poem with metal music. also, slipknot is not death metal. good screams, though. i like them. i have "all hope is gone" but i dont think theyre that good, nowhere near opeth. most metalheads will agree with me, but they would probably be more rude if they read ur comment. i wont, its a matter of taste
@MikeLamb24 This is probably their most mellow album (besides damnation), but saying that slipknot is more brutal and a death metal band is fucking stupid. Listen to some of Opeths heavier music, it makes slipknot look like pussy crap
great powerfull intro with drums and a great guitar riff..terrifying brutal growling vocals..amazing melody..slowing down to clean guitars then back with a heavy breaking bridge...into hell with the growling vocals and an amazing riff...then everything falls into a clean island with clear vocals ...enjoy the trip till the end with the Black Rose Immortal ....an amazing 20's century Musical Masterpiece.

Dear the three "Thumbs Downers"
What you clearly thought was the DOWNload button is actually the "Vote DOWN" button.

@MikeLamb24 I have to understand the connection u made between slipknot and opeth... it's like compare Bruce Springsteen and Metallica... why?

The part at 1:53 sounds medieval or something like that... Seems like a "Once upon a time" background music...

@AwesomeArson I hope it's like Orchid and Morningrise, I seriously doubt it though... Anything from opeth is good however
