Canada is there because our politicians have reasons to believe the U.S. would do something irrational to US if we did nothing. Their "diplomats" were hinting at a trade blockade, seizure of assets, etcetera. The last regime was sufficiently unstable no one know which way they'd jump, a trade embargo would have destroyed our economy, but it would have destroyed yours AND the worlds, we were not quite willing at that point to commit suicide with you.
